Hey Ari, this is a very useful video, I hope you will release more in depth ones. One more tip from me: once the engine has cranked, then go out for a 2 hours ride on a smooth road (avoid stop and go in the trafic) in order to let the electrical system of your bike to effectively recharge the battery. If your battery has really come to its end, then this method could not be enough. For this reason, if you have some rest along the way, then take care of parking your bike facing downhill. The recharged juice should be enough to power the sparks and the injectors anyway, the slope will help you cranking the engine. Sometimes even the 2nd gear is too short, then go with the 3rd. Have fun ;-)
Exactly don’t do it my damn self dead I want to first and accidentally released my clutch there went the rest of my battery I’d also be concerned with stop and go traffic because on a hill I haven’t given enough gas ones with the clutch and stalled for a second Battery was dead that would suck
Unfortunately for me this happened on a Sunday evening when all the shops was closed...so I rode home instead and now my bike jump starts but doesn't stay on after I remove the jumper cables
Dude! Thanks for helping me out on this nice sunny day. It worked and I was off in 10 mins! Thanks for the simple and clear explanation. It was a great day.
And the connection of negative cable to frame on the "dead" bike is also because the current will take the path of least resistance to the starter. The dead battery will act as a huge resistor and can make jumpstart even more difficult.
This happened to me recently. Battery dropped to 11.2 volts. Stuck it on a charger for 30 minutes and she was good to go.The battery quickly went up to 13+ volts and started like a champ. The battery was reading only 30% charge on a smart charger. That power pack looks quite tempting now.
MC Garage.. Thank you for your service! Jumped my 2016 kawasaki ninja zx6r battery whihc was completely dead from my car and left it running for 45 mins.. battery charged fully.. no issues..

Being i have a degree in electrical engineering, i can tell you he is right that you cant damage the bike battery from jumping it with a car or truck or a tank battery for that matter. Electrical devices only pull the amount of current they need. The dead battery is just another load in a the circuit of the larger vehicle, therefore it will only drop the voltage from the running circuit that its rated for, and it will only pull the current its rated for. Electrons flow negative to positive, therefore current is pulled and not pushed. This is why it's always the negative terminal that sparks. Yes it is ground, but power is constantly being pulled to ground, the lesser charge. Think of how vacuum works. Air gets pulled to the lesser pressure. The cylinder creates low pressure below ambient when the piston is sucked down into the cylinder by the crankshaft. This gives the intake manifold vacuum. And now with vacuum we can run fuel pressure regulators, brake boosters... and turbos.

When jumping from a car...12 volts is 12 volts whether it comes from a big battery or a small battery. You can not harm a motorcycle by jumping it from a car battery.
Absolutely right. Whatever the component is i.e. The starter on the dead machine, it will draw whatever it needs regardless of the the provided source.
Kendog....Exactly. Just because that truck battery has 840 cold cranking amps doesn't mean it shoves it down your motorcycle's throat. It simply means it's available should you need it. And you won't.
Yes it is no harm to the bike itself because its voltage controlled. However, a dead battery can act like a very low impedance almost short to another voltage source, thus it is possible for the large car battery to push too much current at once in the small dead motorcycle battery if left on too long.

There is a company in South-Africa that recondition your old battery (no matter the condition) to almost better than brand new condition! I have taken my 10year old battery to them three times and it works fantastically well 👌
My batter tender has been on my bike for 24 hours (after a long trip yesterday back from Baja) thought it sounded weak at startup, it's now SOLID RED for 10 seconds, then 1 GREEN Flash, then Solid Red for another 10 seconds, then 1 Green Flash again like that on and one. ??? what is that???
2:00 I would have said this statement was true until I jump started my SRAD 750 1996 with a Mercedes SLK 230 2002.. I was advised to turn the lights on the Mercedes whilst jump starting to help dissipate some of the power.I didn't think it mattered much so I didn't bother. Although I got the motorcycle running, later on in the week I realised the rectifier had a fault which I replaced and also had to get the stator repaired. The battery was obviously dying and for some reason though it certainly didn't help jump starting it the way I did.. So I'd advise that if you do jump start from another vehicle that has much more power than the dead batterys vehicle, simply dissipate the power as you jump start!
Does a battery cut off switch helps reduce battery drainage when not riding the bike? (just like if it was disconnected?) I do not ride one of my bike very often so its battery always go dead and is not quickly accessible, plus I don't have power for a battery tender.
It might help, but the brutal truth is that lead-acid batteries have a fairly high self-discharge rate, so even if it's disconnected it'll drain down over a few months. Get yourself a float charger and hook up a quick-connect pigtail so it's easy to use.
Ari Henning Yeah I already have a portable jumper and planned to hook UP a Quick connect plug :) I ride the bike maybe twice a Month. Do gel batteries hold up better over time?
If you have one of those old-school flooded (wet) lead-acid batteries, they all suck and will die far faster than more modern technologies like the "gel" batteries you mentioned. Get yourself a quality gel/AGM battery and keep it hooked up to a float charger that turns off once the battery is charged and it'll last you 5-8 years.
Ari Henning haha yeah this is exactly the battery I have (this bike is my old BMW café racer), I'll get a new agm battery like I have in my modern bike and try to ride it more often :) I have no power outlet in my parking unfortunately. Thanks for the help !
I'm reading online that the black connector on the trickle charger is supposed to go on the bike frame (ie, a metallic grounded source) instead of the black lead on the battery. Y/N?
What about the now apparently ‘old school’ cranking battery that usually lives on a battery tender in the depths of the garage/shed/workshop and is only ever wheeled out for the odd cold start morning or the ‘left the parking lights on’ excuse. Best use of a big old 12V lead brick there is. It may not start your car/truck but it will easily crank a wittle motorcycle engine.
I bought a jump starter kit and a battery tender that is a charger and a maintainer. Comes with the cable So you're saying i can just use thr battery tender to jump it too?
Does it make a difference if I remove the + cable from the bike battery first? As soon as I do, the engine dies again. I'll try again with your method.
Wow that Portable Power Pack have gone up in price since this video was made. Ari says that it cost 90 bucks but when using the provided link i go to one that cost 163 bucks.
Since the battery of my Honda VTX 1300 is under my seat and not easily accessible, I installed a pigtail for easy connection to my Battery Tender trickle charger. Can I use that same pigtail to jumpstart the bike, say from another bike, car or jump pack? Will the pigtail wire handle it? Thanks
I had to use a portable power pack like you mentioned on my SV 650 Suzuki. The only pain was having to get to the battery for the jump start. You have to unscrew two panels two screws to get the seat out and lift a tray out. And by the time I got to the battery they’re all these parts hanging and screws on the floor. Is there a solution of getting some type of extension cable that can extend in the backseat and then connect the jumper cables there without having to remove all these parts to get to the battery?
If your rectifier plug is melting, you definitely have an issue with your regulator not regulating, and that'll cook all sorts of stuff including your battery.
Just for the record, jumping Harley Davidsons from a car is a surefire way to burn out your reg/rec, as you said most other bikes are fine, but having worked with harelys for a good 2 years I saw a lot with burned out regulators because the owners jumped them from running cars, great video as always though mate
Liam - Bollocks Very true Liam, a friend jumped my KTM 640 from a running car, destroyed the system as you suggested. Cost a fortune to replace. Also Car battery chargers are a no go for bikes ! Awesome series, learning so much from you. Cheers ✊🏾🤠👊🏾
the difference between car battery and motorcycle battery is just the amperage capacity. and it should be just fine. and i have try it. (not on harley)
Yansen Haryanto correct, however I wasn’t talking about it killing the battery, I’m talking about it killing the regulator, because as you said, the difference is the amperage, the regulator is designed for motorcycle amperage, specifically the motorcycle it’s on, not the massive amount a car or van would take
Liam As far as I know is the reg/rec is dealing with voltage and not amps (of course to many amps will fry anything) But I think the problem is jump starting with the car running, because the alternator in the car, makes another current than motorcycles, therefore the problem. If the car is stopped when jump starting, there should be no problem. At least I think so.
My suzuki sv650 was sitting for a while and I tried using the jump start method. The bike lights up and stuff but won't start. It makes a noise when I press the power ignition button. Please have you any advice to share!!
I would say it doesn't really matter if you jumpstart a lithium battery. If the battery is Dead anyway where will be no significant decrease in performing after jumpstart. I would also try to avoid completely to completely discharge your lithium battery. It does not that to that really kindly
I have brand new battery install on my 2004 RR . In the beginning it was good after a month I have to jump start the bike every time , I took the battery to the store where I pitched they recharge it and gave back and gain in beginning it was good now jump start again. I can’t go anywhere without jump start the bike. Looks soo dumb jump starting the bike
Are there any differences, benefits, or issues with charging a bike, car, lawnmower, etc., with the battery IN circuit vs OUT of circuit? Does it make any difference? If I’m regularly using a Battery Tender, say, during winter months (any long period of down time), is it better to keep the battery out of/disconnected from the vehicle circuit, or is it the same as leaving it connected to the vehicle while charging?
OMG..I saved saved "potentially" so much time jumping my bike. I bought a new battery like last month. Bike started dieing randomly in traffic situations. Usually in 2nd going about 45-60. The past 2 weeks, i've changed the spark plugs, tested the ignition, replaced the fuel pump, and fuel pump filter, the amount of labor into the bike thus far is timeless. Tonight, I decided to try to jump it. OMG.. worked. Didn't hold the charge but, she turned on!! Between the Sparkplugs and the battery... I had no juice and no spark, I was going nowhere. I have a '14 Suzuki GSX R750, the sparkplugs are literally in the middle of the bike under everything (fuel tank, air filter..ect)
If you adjust your suspension from time to time consider doing the headlight aiming/adjusting deal at the same time too. Just something to keep in mind.
MR. Duffy put the bike well vertical (ask a friend to sit on it and hold it vertical) in front of a wall that is 10 meters far away. Measure the height of the bulb of the headlight. Now measure the height of the top flat edge of the illuminated portion of the wall: it must be 90% of the bulb height. Refer to the pic goo.gl/images/bWQmpd
Is there a difference between standard battery charger cables and jump start cables? Can I turn the ignition on if I'm just using a standard battery charger pack with cables attached? Cheers
Just be aware that jumping from a car battery can be bad for bike electrics and void warranties on ecu, battery and electrical bits. I’ve not had an issue when doing it in a pinch but I did have a warning light come until my next dealership service (when they told me the above info)

Hello, My hornet 600 (2005) has a dead battery. I can't charge the battery because the screws are messed up and I can't remove them. Tried to bump start it, but as she have the HISS system, I can't put 2nd gear and it doesn't work in neutral. I tried the bump start in a slightly inclined road, would I be able to bump start it in neutral if I manage to get the bike to a big inclination road?
my honda sh50 city express year 2000, runs happy without battery in at all just cant run indicators and lights at same time had it over 18 years now still runs good.
I dont think its a stop motion. I think they shot the part where "Garage" is written, then erased it, shook the table in a certain fashion and recorded it becoming a mess. Then they reversed that mess footage, stitched it with the writing footage and the whole thing looks like magic. Quite creative.
Another method when you have no jumping cable and etc. Pull clutch, run like hell pushing the bike, quickly kick up to 3rd and 4th gear, let go of the clutch slowly about half or 3/4 and wrist the throttle. Easiest is going down the slope sitting on the bike with clutch pull, up to the stated gear at the precised speed, let go of the clutch slowly, when it starting to go alive then wrist the throttle to start. Works for me to ride back home and juice the battery overnight.
Thanks for the great video. Now we are starting to get lion batteries on bikes. My lion jump, starter says, "warning, in the instructions don't use on lion batteries" . What do you think

Hi i recently just bought a 2019 honda rebel 300 but haven't rode it since i got it which is probably about a month. Reason i didn't ride is cause i'm not fully licensed to ride one yet, but today when i cranked the ignition, it was very sluggish and made the same sound as you did in the beginning of the video. I did notice everything else was beginning to die, including the lights and signals etc... could it be that the bike was sitting in the dealership for a while and the battery just slowly dying? tonight i ordered a charger from Amazon, and i should get it tomorrow, so hopefully it just needed a simple charge.
Called the local dealership who told me NOT to connect to a car battery to charge... must have not had the time to fully explain how. My 2008 SV650 battery was dead and I got it started just by rolling it downhill a few minutes in the alley. It got hot after riding several interstate miles to the dealership and I think the fuel injectors were also not at peak- I’m hoping that will correct itself with new battery?
Do you recommend replacing a battery every few years as preventative maintenance, or do you keep going on the same battery until it goes bad? I've got a 2014 FZ-09 with the original battery. No issues so far, but I'm wondering when I should replace it.
Lester Marten The battery will go bad slowly if you don' discharge it completly very often. I would only consider buying a new one if your bike doesn't hold the charge for a few weeks without riding. If you are worried about one day not being able to start your bike I would rather invest in a charger/jumper cables.
Iv'e had batteries last 10 years on many vehicles. Never let a lead acid battery go flat ever the acid is actually stronger when flat and there not designed to cycle like other batteries. Best tip is to always start engine first then turn on accessories/lights and at the end turn everything of and run for a bit for a bit to top the battery up a little. I know on some vehicles it's not possible but this helps the battery a fair bit.
It might actually cook your battery. Batteries are only meant to be charged at a maximum rate. If you charge too quick, the battery will lose life and possibly crack or explode. Definitely be careful with lithium

Great video, any chance to show how to start the motorcycle in the cold weather around 5 degrees or under, I'm always struggling to start my bike during the temp is that low
Keep it in. A garage then use a heater. I lived in a sub level and bought a 50ft extension cord. And would take a smoke break while watching my bike and moderating the heater under the tarp facing the bike keeping it warm this helped

So I'd advise that if you do jump start from another vehicle that has much more power than the dead batterys vehicle, simply dissipate the power as you jump start!
i like the intro with the bolts and knobs, cool touch 👌
Does a battery cut off switch helps reduce battery drainage when not riding the bike? (just like if it was disconnected?)
I do not ride one of my bike very often so its battery always go dead and is not quickly accessible, plus I don't have power for a battery tender.
It might help, but the brutal truth is that lead-acid batteries have a fairly high self-discharge rate, so even if it's disconnected it'll drain down over a few months. Get yourself a float charger and hook up a quick-connect pigtail so it's easy to use.
Ari Henning Yeah I already have a portable jumper and planned to hook UP a Quick connect plug :)
I ride the bike maybe twice a Month.
Ari Henning haha yeah this is exactly the battery I have (this bike is my old BMW café racer), I'll get a new agm battery like I have in my modern bike and try to ride it more often :)
I have no power outlet in my parking unfortunately.
Thanks for the help !
The negative pole of charger is attached on the battery or on the non painted metal piece of bike ? Thank you
I'm reading online that the black connector on the trickle charger is supposed to go on the bike frame (ie, a metallic grounded source) instead of the black lead on the battery.
It may not start your car/truck but it will easily crank a wittle motorcycle engine.
well now i know what to do with my old Honda Rebel battery. Thanks!
I bought a jump starter kit and a battery tender that is a charger and a maintainer. Comes with the cable So you're saying i can just use thr battery tender to jump it too?
I can't find that Deltran portable battery charger any where. The link you provided doesn't work, and it's not on Amazon or Cycle Gear.
Does it make a difference if I remove the + cable from the bike battery first?
As soon as I do, the engine dies again.
I'll try again with your method.
Bump start FTW
Wow that Portable Power Pack have gone up in price since this video was made. Ari says that it cost 90 bucks but when using the provided link i go to one that cost 163 bucks.
Since the battery of my Honda VTX 1300 is under my seat and not easily accessible, I installed a pigtail for easy connection to my Battery Tender trickle charger. Can I use that same pigtail to jumpstart the bike, say from another bike, car or jump pack? Will the pigtail wire handle it? Thanks
Hi my Honda Gl 150 , while starting the ignition key 🔑 the lights and battery goes down how to fix , I’ll apréciate your help my good friend
I have jumped my bikes with an car. I don't start the car. It has always worked like a charm.
I'd recommend an Anti-Gravity PPS, a lot smaller than the Deltran. I have jumped several cars with it and fits in your pocket.
Very good explanaition.. but can the dead battery issue caused by the rectifier plug melting?
Cheers
✊🏾🤠👊🏾
Yep, it's good to get a charger that has option to select car or motorcycle or on that can recognize the difference and adjust its charging.
the difference between car battery and motorcycle battery is just the amperage capacity. and it should be just fine. and i have try it.
High there I'm just wondering if its safe to run a high performance ytz14s on a mt10 as the standard ytz10s struggle alot on these bikes
I have heard you aren't supposed to jump start a bike equiped with a lithium ion battery. Is this true?
I would say it doesn't really matter if you jumpstart a lithium battery. If the battery is Dead anyway where will be no significant decrease in performing after jumpstart. I would also try to avoid completely to completely discharge your lithium battery. It does not that to that really kindly
Thank you for the video! I got my bike running now!
Yamaha scooter smax 2018, 150c [ it's same do or just plag or connecting battery from my truck to scooter & run??? 🧐🧐🧐
does this apply to an older bike?? I have a Honda rebel 250 1985
Hi, can we use the same heavy duty jumper cables (for car) to jump-start a bike?
Are there any differences, benefits, or issues with charging a bike, car, lawnmower, etc., with the battery IN circuit vs OUT of circuit? Does it make any difference? If I’m regularly using a Battery Tender, say, during winter months (any long period of down time), is it better to keep the battery out of/disconnected from the vehicle circuit, or is it the same as leaving it connected to the vehicle while charging?
This episode helped me big time today! Thanks!!
Having bump started a cruiser I wish bikes still had kickstarters as backups.
Can you use this to jump Start lithium ion batteries in your bike or just lead-acid batteries?
Could you do a video on how to properly aim a headlight. I feel lile mine is never perfect and I'm constantly adjusting it.
Thanks!!
Refer to the pic

Is there a difference between standard battery charger cables and jump start cables? Can I turn the ignition on if I'm just using a standard battery charger pack with cables attached? Cheers
Thanks, I was wondering if I had to disconnect the leads to the battery, excellent a very easy process.
Thanks for the instructions, would not have been able to sort my bike without this vid 👍🏼
The clearest explanation. +1 sub
Just be aware that jumping from a car battery can be bad for bike electrics and void warranties on ecu, battery and electrical bits. I’ve not had an issue when doing it in a pinch but I did have a warning light come until my next dealership service (when they told me the above info)
I have a kawasaki Vulcan 650s and it has a VTZ 10S battery. Can I replace it with a VTZ5s ?? I live in Thailand out in no where country side. And for the life of me I can't find any big motorcycle shops around. But there is a thousand scooter repair shops around.
Sir Is it advisable to put the gear on 3rd and push the bike to turn on? Tried it many times but not sure if it's safe.
Why you don’t connect the cable to the negative of the motorcycle battery?
Hello ! nice video. can someone explain me or answer me this?
I have dead battery.
1. if i connect battery charger to motorcycle cables will be turn on? direct electricity from charger to motorcycle cables (without battery).
2. if i connect a car battery to my moto just to turn on.. is it possible? i think car battery is 24v ?
Hello,
My hornet 600 (2005) has a dead battery.
If I may ask, what city and state do you guys film in?
Is my battery completely dead if it dies right as I unclamp the cables? I would assume as much, but need reassurance.
Thank you so much for the jump start video. Was always worried I might fry my electronics in my bike. Not so much now.
my honda sh50 city express year 2000, runs happy without battery in at all just cant run indicators and lights at same time had it over 18 years now still runs good.
2:00 and for that reason, I’m Out
-Barbra (Shark Tank) 😂
That was the coolest video intro animation (the MC logo stopmotion) I've ever seen
I have a petrol buggy, I've tried charging it with a trickle charger but it won't even show up anything is there battery naked or do I need a better charger. Its a 12v motorcycle battery
@Dolan DeDock it worked great. All it needed was a charge. Thanks👍
1 question, if you had already bought a bew battery then it won't start, does it really need to jump start? Peaceee
What about a push start? That's usually worked on some of my bikes, though they were smaller capacity ones.
Push start = bump start, which is what he suggests at the beginning. Can be difficult for big modern bikes though.
Sabre1ewan ah. Didn't realise that he'dmentioned that.
I say every 4 years change it or when you notice your battery cant hold more than a 12.5v change when at full capacity
Also lead acid only has >350 cycles use them wisely. Also when flat the acid can freeze at lower temperature fully charged there good for -55 degrees
is it ok to charge my 2019 mt09 battery while all of its terminals are still connected?
Will the junior battery tender work as well?
It might actually cook your battery. Batteries are only meant to be charged at a maximum rate. If you charge too quick, the battery will lose life and possibly crack or explode. Definitely be careful with lithium
If your bike has a lithium battery installed can it still be jumped with a lithium jump pack?
Rode My 2010 bmw s1k for 2 days after getting transmission work done to it, it has the bright matt gecko lights, & for some reason they still come on super bright but, my bike won’t crank.
Battery is almost 2 yrs old. Today my bike won't start.
Should i change the battery or charge it up?
What if I charge it up and ride the bike every day. Will that fix the battery or it won't be good again?
Awesome--soo, I had bike shops giving me bad information about jump starting a bike, but maybe I shouldn't be surprised
Is it safe to charge the battery without disconnecting?
Great video, very helpful. Unfortunately that Deltran jump starter is $194 in the UK!!!!!
How long would you say someone should ride their r3 once they Jumpstart it so the battery could fully charge??? 2 hours or less?
hello, I have a SUZUKI TS185 motorbike, so this motorbike has no battery Iam using it though. the mani problem I have got with this is the engine can't stay running unless I pump or feed it benzene the fuil. shortly can't stay idle. what should I do
Great video, any chance to show how to start the motorcycle in the cold weather around 5 degrees or under, I'm always struggling to start my bike during the temp is that low
Keep it in. A garage then use a heater. I lived in a sub level and bought a 50ft extension cord. And would take a smoke break while watching my bike and moderating the heater under the tarp facing the bike keeping it warm this helped
