Sevdaliza: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | January 5, 2021
"Good afternoon humans, my name is Sevdaliza, you're very welcome on flight 808; our destination is Shabrang." And so begins our elegant, ethereal journey. We hear an old reel-to-reel tape machine spinning some Brazilian bossa nova sounds, then shift to something more somber. Sevdaliza is seated, the tones are golden and brown, and her yearning voice sings, "I am flesh, bones / I am skin, soul / I am human." The song, "Human," which casts away the notion of artists - particularly female artists - as products.
It's a defiant stand from this Iranian-born artist. Sevdaliza is an original, a truly creative soul. Her collaborators play delicate textures - electronic percussion, buzzing, swirling synth sounds, and cello and violin beautifully enhance texture and melody.
The home for this Tiny Desk (home) concert is a culturally significant bookstore and publishing house in Amsterdam called MENDO. Its warmth sets the tone for songs from Sevdaliza's album Shabrang. If you haven't heard her record, this is a perfect introduction to an album you shouldn't have missed in 2020.

Wishing you lots of continued success! ❤
You've come so far Sevda we're so happy for you
Thank you!
She's finally getting the recognition she deserves, Shabrang is easily one of the best albums in 2020...
Word!!
Ikr, she's amazing.
Zahmen!🤗🖖🤓
She? Or they?
@@SystemExclusive Sevdaliza is a solo artist and her own songwriter and producer, her band is also amazing too.
Vocals, Expression, Authenticity, Humanity, Knowledge - Sevdaliza
Authenticity? She seems like an art figure. But that ok, she‘s an artist.
@@tartufobianco4200art is authenticity in its purest form
But those who can't hear the music think the ones dancing are crazy
Lol had to write this pRetEeNtioUs comment for you
What did I just listen to? Why isn't anyone raving about this phenomenal woman? Why are people sleeping on her brilliance? Everything is giving legendary! I'm here after listening to Alibi.
Alibi honestly does nothing for me, its not bad but I miss her atmospheric brooding trip hop era...
Can we talk about how amazing the musicians are too , like, wow, what a team!! This takes you to somewhere else!
the violin for gole bi goldoon is so amazing 13:01
Sevdaliza sounds particularly amazing when she sings in Farsi. I hope she does it on future projects.
My exact same thought
I'm so happy Sevdaliza was on Tinydesk. She deserves all the recognitions. She doesn't create music, she creates soundscapes and emotions, This was just as amazing of all the other things she's done!
Her visuals are some of the dopest in the game I remember sitting for hours just rewatching her videos and feeling like I was in another dimension
Absolutely!!!🌄
I swear Sevdaliza 's music has a vibe I cannot describe but all I know is I love the vibe ..I'm loving this ..arg man . This is beautiful ! :)
that's because she's most talented and she makes expriences
Look up Portishead for a similar sound
@@DefinitelyNotBender oh yeah? Mos Def.. Thanks for the recommendation 🙏
Mesmerizing and angelic, very hard to describe.
She has been my inspiration for the last 4-5yrs. She is so strong in who she is. She is able to create music that speaks to the soul. That awakens the soul. That stops you dead in your tracks because it’s moving your body without you realizing it. I am proud and honored to be able to watch the growth in this time. I know there is so much more that goes into everything than what is shown. I am thankful that has all worked out because she has stayed true to herself. I am thankful for this moment. Thank you all, who made this possible. Every step of the way
Amen ...been following her from the start. Hoped she would get the recognition world wide. She is one of the most honest artists. Goes her own way.
Discovered her in 2016 and have been closely following ever since. The art she shares is a gift.
@@surfraptor She has definitely been a breath of fresh air. Feels like we finally have a voice in this world.
I enjoyed all of it but when Gole Bi Goldoon started, I got proper goose bumps all over my arms... I don't even speak the language.
Same here.
Its Persian and the original song belongs to "Googoosh - Gole bi goldoon"
When she started talking😭😭😭😭omg how can someone be so flawless 😭😭😭
SHE IS THE MOMENT!
I'm digging the Portishead/Thom Yorke vibe. Make no mistake this is definitely all her own, this is Sevdaliza.
Fun fact she didn't know who Portishead were until they told her she sounds like them.
dont forget frusciante
@@ZacharyKhitmi that's crazy man, I'd be over the moon if I heard that.
I love both bands but I see no resemblance other than both are AMAZING. She is her own force so is Portishead
All her own? I was just wondering. Does she make the music or is she pure vocalist?
She always has the amazing hair on set!!!
Love that hair colour 😍😍
She's literally a genius
13:10 mannnn I love how they are all so engaged with each others' playing... gives such a feel to the sound
You can tell by the performance alone that she 100% wrote these songs
Incredible performance from queen sev ❤ She looks so beautifully here too. Her brown dress and hair color! 😍 Im obsessed!!
Big Bjork energy! Salute!
Thank you NPR, Sevdaliza deserves to reach more people.
Gol bi Goldoon is a beautiful Persian song originally by Googoosh. Here is the English translation for anyone who was wondering:
you were telling me that i'm nothing without you
stay with me forever
if you're not be here, i'll die
flower without flower-vase, it's impossible (it can't be)
what a mistake I made
that i believed your words
a cold day in autumn
you broke your flower-vase
like the bride of flowers
you sat in the greenhouse
the spring will come again
they'll bring you again
like an ornamental flower
they'll plant you in a greenhouse
you'll say to your(new) flower-vase again
"stay with me forever"
you say "i'll die without you"
flower without flower vase, it's impossible
what a mistake she makes
that she believes your words
the original one is so different wow, i love what Sevdaliza did
Thank you so much ❤ and thank you for the translation - Beautiful ❤
❤
Love how she always lets space for the musicians. They are great.
(Still can’t believe she is human and nothing more than human...)
Sharing is an extraordinary thing, thank you Sevdaliza.
I used to imagine what the 4th Portishead album would sound like.
Totally, we need more of Portishead , I miss them.
Right? I'm feeling a major Portishead vibe going on here. Beautiful music Sevdaliza! I just discovered you :)
Probably nothing like this, based on Third. If anything, I think they'll take the Krautrock sounds of Beak> and Anika further
:)
I've been a Portishead fan since the mid 1990s...and no disrespect to them at all, but she blows them out of the water.
Reminds me of portishead sometimes.. I love her ❤
Why in seven hells does this sound like it isn't live??? Now that's talent sheeesh
@@shmeli thank you man,you're right.
@@shmeli pre-recorded? I was always under the impression that they are recorded during the actual performance and then mixed afterwards. Is that not the case?
Perhaps I’m just misunderstanding your comment. not tryna be hostile btw just genuinely curious
@@mf1553 you are correct, I didn’t mean to say that the audio was pre-recorded, only that the performance was recorded before the release and not live. thanks for the clarification because it would be accurate to say that it was recorded live, so I used the wrong terminology, my apologies. we agree that it was post mixed and that is probably why 0P questioned how it sounds so good
I feel like a proud relative seeing Sevdaliza grow and evolve over the past few years and receive more recognition.
Thanks for your music and thanks to NPR as well.

This is so cool and surreal idk why it’d so much different watching hey performance but this woman has divine feminine goddess unearthly energy
Seeing Sevdaliza live at the North Sea Jazz festival was a life changing experience. Last show at a three day festival, thought I chill in the back but after one beat I was in the front row.
i saw her post on ig, i screamed
came here and it was the first thing recommended to me!
really was not expecting this but i think it's time everybody put some respek on her name
"I'll do anything, just be my friend" hits me hard.
I’m a big fan of Sevdaliza, thanks for featuring her ❤️
I don’t know who the f she is, but she’s dope. New fan here from Mississippi! 🙀🙀🙋🏻♂️
@@austinmonroe3894 You're In For A Treat!
I’ve never been this early to a Tiny Desk drop, wow they give out refreshments
Gole Bi Goldoon is probably one of my favourites. The imagery is absolutely beautiful and her voice serves as a beautiful conduit for that art
I've just discovered this artist, and it feels like I've just uncovered a whole new genre I didn't know I was looking for. These songs just speak to me like nothing else. Power, finesse and authenticity. My new favourite artist ☺️
And two years later, here I am feeling exactly the same as what you said, word for word!
Words cannot describe how much I love this woman and the magic she creates! All Rivers at Once is phenomenal live.
"Gole Bi Goldoon" makes me cry. She is a treasure.
The musicianship is superb! Svedaliza is in a league of her own....
Not even close to a thumbs down. Unbelievable to me really. Even if it's not your jam you have to acknowledge the talent and hard work?! I unfortunately and fortunately have been turned on to so many new musicians through Tiny Desk and love it all. What a beauty and a voice, and I love that everyone plays their part in order for the machine to work, imo. Thank you Musical Humans:)
She may not be everyone's taste but no one can deny the effort she puts into her music, no label record and her own lyricist and co-producer, she's definitely not your average singer/songwriter.
Following her work since Sirens of the caspian and she never fails to give an outstanding performance.
Who else is spending the rest of the day binging all her music?
I definitely was not ready for this amazingness
Finally Sev is getting the recognition she deserves. I'm so happy for her.
She is a true artist
everything about her is just * chef's kiss *
0:00 - *Human*

This version of Dormant sent several chills down my spine! God, she IS divine !!
YES!! Finally the recognition she deserves. I’ve been dancing to “human” for 3 years now. It’s incredible.
Her sound is music in a pure form. Does that makes sense?
I tell you I JUMPED when I saw she was here. Absolute goddess
Been a fan since “That Other Girl”. You’re amazing, from one singer to another. Continued blessings to you, Sevdaliza. ❤️
I love ALL of her Music! ALL RIVERS AT ONCE is my absolute fav and inspiration! Beautiful rendition!
She watched 3 of my stories in 2020 with my music playing on them. That's when I knew that my frequency had changed forever, and I'm on the right path infinitely! Going up! Blessings beautiful souls and stay safe, all love!💫🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💫
🤍🤍🤍
I am afraid that the lifetime is not enough to fully understand her genius. Everything Sevdaliza does, it's just on a higher level ♥️♥️.
So iconic! Such a breathe of fresh air.
Nuff said
It's The Way Sev Slides Into Dormant's Lyrics and Soundscape, That Ushers Me Back To My Mid Teens & Discovering Portis Head And The Wonderland That Is TripHop... I Love The Way She Drags Me Into The Deep End. You Truly Are Divinity.

her newest record is so powerful to me and she quickly became one of my favorite artists, she is so inspiring and wonderful in so many ways and I just love that people like her make music for the world :)
Please let's have a big shout-out for NPR's tiny desk

All of these changes in songs are beautiful. Even human feels fresh now after all this time
This still amazes me, so chill but powerfull

Finally an authentic artist! Thank you for having her... more of this please!
I can't believe I ever went to her show in Brazil, it was something out of the ordinary. Sevdaliza is a phenomenal artist, I really admire her. I want to have the honor of seeing her perform Shabrang live, simply her best album without a doubt. ♥️
The tones incorporated in these songs are powerful stuff. Evocative is the word that comes to mind
I’m addicted to their music and in love with the singer! Can’t stop watching her singing.
Tiny desk bombed me in the past months with my favourite artists. Please stop, I can't handle it!
I'm crying while watching this. How talented and pure is she?!!! So proud of what Sevda has achieved so far and can't wait to see what the future brings for her.
I’ve had the great honor to see Sevdaliza live two times. She is hands down one the best artists and performers of our time. Love her a lot. ❤️

Her voice is as beautiful as she is! So soothing and sensual... love it!!
Her energy is like no other, truly ethereal
Ahhh so this is why I woke up and couldnt get back to sleep. What a lovely morning surprise!
Her music is so real, strange, exotic. It touches me very deeply. It takes me to some unconscious places. I love her creativity, openness and exploration. She and her team are incredible artists!
This is the first time I've heard Sevdaliza. I'm mesmerized with vocals, lyrics, so melancholic but what a beautiful vibe I can't describe. Jeeesusss!
That version of "Dormant" is amazing!!!!! Thanks so much Sev, you're an incredible human being!

Thank You Tiny Desk for featuring one of my favourit Artists right now. She is so unique i love it!
I thought I was going to play this as background music but I have been obsessively staring at the way she sings mesmerised for 18 minutes and 12 seconds
Sevdaliza is incredibly talented and her last album is a masterpiece, really glad and proud she's been recognized for both! ❤
Wow 😳! One of the most beautiful and unique sounding artist I've heard. The vocalization and instrumentations are absolutely gorgeous.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this in my feed!!! Thank you Sevdaliza and NPR for this wonderful gift 🤍🖤
She is one of those electronic artists who puts so much soul and emotion into her music She doesn't sound like an electronic artist.
