    I must say I have not been disappointed with any of the tb products. I used a lot of their polyester resin, waxed gel coat, primer, fairing and bottom paint. Glad I watched and rewatched all your vdos before starting the projects and buying products. Thanks for all your hard work and time.

    over the past 3 months, i repainted my whole topsides (roll/tip), faired my keel, painted the bottom AND have started on painting my whole deck. I've begun replacing my brightwork and have started planning more intermediate level projects. All this because your videos have given me the confidence in the process and the materials. Thanks for doing this. Your work has a real impact on the world of DIY boatwork.

    Really appreciate how you help out do it yourselfers by showing how to do these various projects. I've just completed what was for me a huge epoxy repair where the compression post of a sailboat went through the cabin sole. Of course we only hope our work comes out a good looking as yours does.

    Andy ,another good reason for using ready mixed epoxy with filler and thickeners already added is getting good wet out of the fillers. Slapping filler in resin just before your use is does not always do a good job. Dry fillers can be a real problem! This is particularly true of thickeners (colloidal silica) as opposed to fillers. The thickener products require time to produce the correct viscosity. Commercially when they add the thickners they check the viscosity a few hrs after mixing in and make adjustments. This is particularly important in resins for laminating where you want the thinnest product for good wet out but enough thixotropic properties to hang on vertical surfaces! Thanks for posting , cheers. Warren

    I used this product a couple of years ago with multiple bleb repair on hull and fairing around keel and on lead keel. Was chewed up from rocks and after grinding lead smooth. Which was very easy being so malleable, it just melted pretty smooth. The Tb/tf was great and easy to apply. I covered with primer then gel coat with wax from tb and then bottom painted. I will be cleaning bottom after boat was in water all winter here in ct. will put follow up after cleaning and maybe GoPro pics of any issues. Water still cold here.

    I opted to use a number of Total Boat products on my recently acquired J24, including the total Fair used in the video. The choice, for me, was largely based on price initially, but I was pleased to find that their product support, ease of ordering online, instructional videos, etc, are fantastic! Jamestown Distributors also carries a full line of almost anything you may need for a recreational boat. Their shipping is prompt, and prices are very competitive. I have also found that the Total Boat products are easy to work with, although I really have nothing to compare them to having no experience with fiberglass work. I think the results I achieved, given my lack of experience, may be a testimony to the ease of use alone. So far I've used their epoxy, polyester resin, fairing compound, anti fouling paint, and some topside paint, all with excellent results! The only part of my project where I opted for a different brand, was the epoxy barrier primer. I went with the Pettit product for that, only because it had a much more flexible window between coats without sanding. Being a weekend warrior, I did not believe I would get all the necessary coats done in the time allotted with the Total Boat product. I suppose I'll have to wait and see how the anti-fouling performs, but the application was effortless.
    I was very happy to see your opinions of a Total Boat product, as it gave me some validation of my choice. I'm also fairly proud that I came to some of the same conclusions that you did as well!
    Love your videos, your shop, and your outstanding craftsmanship! Keep up the fantastic work!

    Thanks for all the videos and the great overview you’re selling. All very helpful. I’m replacing the teak cockpit seats only my 1983 Kelly Peterson (likely replacing with Seadek) and have seen you use both this fairing compound without drilling out the screw holes and west epoxy after drilling out the screw holes. How do you decide which fix is best? Thanks

    Andy, when you refinish a hull for paint or gelcoat...do you use a random orbit sander, a rectangular sander, both being either electric or pneumatic or electric, or, do you make a long sanding board? need some advice....thanks...

      It's an Oneida Dust Deputy. www.oneida-air.com/category.asp?Id={CC6B6F2A-E3D7-4F18-A53C-B5C357DFE131} Works pretty well, especially for wood. Some fine glass dust still makes it through to the filter but you still get a lot more life out of the filter before it's time to replace :-)

    Hi, great vids. Do you have a recommendation for repairing screw holes in my fiberglass transom, below the water line? I have six screw holes from an old transducer and speedometer that were plugged by the previous owner. I do have a slow leak. Appreciate your input

    What a coincidence that you did a video on this product about 12 hours after I had just ordered it! I'm wondering though how thick can I safely lay the fairing compound? I have a quarter inch gash in the fiberglass above the waterline and thought this would make a great filler. I think the repair seems too small for laying up glass and epoxy, but where do you draw the line?

    Are there different strengths of fillers? Lets say if your going to reuse the same hole for a screw etc? What color does this dry?

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday  7 років тому +2

      This particular fairing compound is only for fairing as it sands easily. There are other fillers avail when you start looking at mixing your own epoxy that do have different working characteristics. Some for bonding, some for tapping, etc.. It can get a little overwhelming but I'm working on something to help simplify the learning process! Stay tuned this Summer ;-)

    Nice. Have you tried System Three Quick Fair? It looks the same except that it mixes 2:1 and the two parts are not different enough in color.

      Hey Todd! I have not, what's been your experience with it?

    • @todddunn945
      @todddunn945 7 років тому

      Andy, it looks about the same as the Total Boat product. I have been using it for a few years and like it except that the two parts are tan and darker tan and it is hard to tell when it is thoroughly mixed. It is also 2:1. It cures quickly and sands easily though.

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday  7 років тому +3

      For maintenance alone I personally prefer glass boats. That said, I prefer the interior of the cabins to have a ton of wood (adds character ;-) !

  • @travis.stevens

    Any benefit to using this over an epoxy + filler? I've been using Sea Hawk epoxy with their F6 fairing filler for screw holes. I've also got some Bondo type filler, but I'm more familiar with the epoxy at this stage.

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday  7 років тому +2

      I'm not familiar with that brand of epoxy, but I'm guessing by the time you add the cost of the resin, hardener, and filler this might be a much more economical option for fairing :-) One benefit to mixing your own is that you have more control and various fillers avail for a particular task to get exactly what you need.

    Andy I have a 16' aluminum bass boat I recently discovered that my flotation was waterlogged anyway the reason is that the deck was left unsealed by the previous owner. bottom line can/will polyester resin bond with aluminum the deck material is plywood I've watched a lot of your videos and I like you test with the gel coat on epoxy maybe you know and can give an answer or conduct a test for me thank you

  • @hommie789
    @hommie789 7 років тому

    Seems like a good DI|Y compound but how does it sand and look after? Love your video's but on this maybe you should have done a test piece on scrap showing how it looks after it sets and then how it sands and the expected results of it. Just a thought but I can see your really busy and need to finish this project not doing just test stuff for us.
