Good timing. The weather ought to be breaking in North America in the next month or two, and those of us without heated mega-shops will be back to our own glass, woodwork and painting projects.

Good to see you back Andy. I mentioned before we are doing a similar job on our Northwind 41. Unfortunately the core was completely rotten and the metalwork under the chainplates corroded too. It's become quite a big job !!! Luckily we have an excellent boatbuilder here in Galway.

Finally saw the "checks" all over the 'glass that looks like the hull on my boat! Dark blue gelcoat and in the sun. Was told they are heat checks. I will look forward to the repair.

I rebuilt the decks of a Taiwan built boat some years ago and found the core to be made up of 3'' square mahogany ply laminated into the deck mold with micro-balloon-resin slurry to fill the gaps. It was evident that they'd utilized the bulkhead scraps very industriously.

Thank you very much for the update. I have been worried about what was going on. it is great to hear that you have gotten so much done and we understand that not everything makes great video, like hours and hours of sanding but I love picking up on new techniques and attack plans for even the boring jobs. I am really looking forward to following your progress on this boat and to see how she turns out. Thank you again.

I love your videos! Your instruction with glass work and resins gave me confidence to repair the bow of my boat where the bow eyelet had been partially pulled through due to the inner backing rotting. My current project is replacing the transom's plywood core, but I haven't decided if I'm going to go with Coosa board or something like Seacast. Next season I'm looking to address some crazing on the deck's gelcoat, so I can't wait to see how you deal with it on this project.

I have a project boat from the same manufacturer, with the same deck issue to solve. And the same core, except I'm almost positive my core is teak (!!!) do you think this idea would work? 1. Everywhere there is a screw hole from where the teak deck was screwed down, enlarge the screw hole to 3/8 with a Forstner bit. 2. Get the boat under cover, and run a heater inside the boat for a couple weeks to cook the moisture out of the core. 3. Pour west into the 3/8 screw holes and jack up from inside to Reestablish contact between the core and the deck lamination. Thks for supplying so much real world knowledge about boat repair.

Watching this project with a lot of interest Andy. I'm doing a core replacement as well on a 1970's era sailboat and have a very similar type of gelcoat crazing going on throughout the deck. I'm debating whether to strip it entirely or if epoxy fairing + paint will be sufficient. I'll be looking forward to seeing what kind of solution you come up with for your project boat. Thanks for the great videos!

The rule of thumb for air-drying wood in a lumber mill is 1" per year. Now that may be a bit conservative for your project but it's going to take a bit longer than two weeks to dry that core out. Just my two cents.

Hey Andy, glad to see you back. After watching your videos (and ALL the others, of which yours are by far the most detailed, informative, and honest), I've pulled the trigger on a (small) project boat. I'd never have had the courage without your vids. I'm looking forward to the crackling in textured gelcoat solutions. I don't want to mold and replace all of mine. I also want to ask if you could do something on a larger gelcoat area, I'm thinking about recovering my whole deck and cubby, it's only 16ft, and seriously faded from the AZ sun. ( Is it cost effective, what steps involved, etc. ) Also, my first repair is the keel box on which the sides have collapsed a little. I'm nervous, but I'm doing a bit of sampling to get started. I wonder if you might do something about clean up, proper disposal, cleaning of utensils. I know you prefer disposable brushes, but do you also replace all of those mixing cups? How do you dispose of them, is there hazmat concerns? Cleaning up fiber shreds best practices, etc.? Lastly, I was hoping you might answer who some of your favorite suppliers are. West Marine is the only local distributor of West systems epoxy locally, do you have a secret connect, or an affiliate link? I suppose I might want to check your website, so if the answer is there, please disregard. Again, thanks for doing the vids, which you're getting much better at btw. I can say with conviction there's nobody better on UA-cam. And you'd probably be surprised at how many people would watch you sand for 10 minutes, especially if you high speeded it like Jimmy Deresta. Cheers!

I'm going to be watching these videos closely. I have a 1985 Chris Craft Commander 315. it is in rough shape. the foredeck, and cockpit deck hatches are all soaked. They were all cored with balsa core. I am going to replace the foredeck with balsa core, but the deck hatches will be Airex panel.

Hi Andy, big job! I am curious as to how you can just dry the core. yes I know it is mahogany and can be dried. But I would think that it would not be bonded to the lower skin as it was not bonded to the upper skin. Also, can you please tell us exactly what products you are using by brand name, if you can. For instance, when you rebuilt the rudder and used 16 pound foam. Who's foam did you use? I love the videos as they are fun and interesting and, most importantly, have helped me with my projects. Thanks!!!

What type of moisture detector did you use when you tested the decking? My American Mariner has plywood core and I suspect some moisture in it. Did you use the two pointed meter that you poke into the wood or a non-invasive moisture meter? I've got both kinds.

I would like very much if you cut the videos going to the point fast and straight forward. I think it will be nice for everyone who are following you and it, maybe, would help to reach more audience as well. Am I right? What do you think? Thanks a lot anyway. Cheers!
