Great childhood memories of Ridgewood, NY - 1969! My mother had the exact machine but in brown with dark brown edges. I remember the mini basket! And the florescent light above the settings! If the machine would "dance" during the spin cycle, me or my brother would sit on the top to keep it steady! lol... But I do remember the machine having a safety lid switch on it. If you were to open the lid during the spin cycle, it would spin down until you closed it.
GE's mini-basket was a clever design that was really great for hand washables. Once it filled up via the recirculating water through the filter-flo pan, the water recirculated to the regular tub through holes at the top of the mini-basket during agitation. There are also holes on the inside of the mini-basket to allow the water to drain into the regular tub when the waher pauses between agitation and spin.
One great feature was the durability, hats off to General Electrics motor designs which were very ingenious! I went under that washer and marveled at the motor and pumping system, I would wonder how the pump spun fast while the agitation cycle was in progress. Equally amazing was during the spin cycle, the pump reveres direction, the main pulley spins slowly and yet the pump spins fast, it always looked as if the motor had a dual armature. Wish they would post the underneath!
Nice washer my parents had one exactly like this when I was a kid in the early 70's that included that mini basket.That color is avacado,but lasted only a few years and replaced it with a maytag.Brings back alot of memories.Thanks for posting.
My parents bought one of these in 1978, it lasted till 1997. It had the mini-basket,straight vain agitator,quick stop braking. I loved the recycling of the water during agitation in to the lint filter, that was a great feature. One bad design was the speed control, you needed to select your speed prior to turning it on, if you changed your mind while it was running, you would knock the little magnetically activated solenoid out of alignment, which was mounted on the motor underneath.

My family had one of these when I was growing up, and the water level for the mini-basket (if it is removed) just covers the bottom of the agitator (or "activator" as GE used to call it). When the water recirculating into the filter pan fills up the mini-basket, the water level in the regular tub barely touches the bottom of the agitator.
Was there any real turnover using the Mini basket or did the clothes just get thrashed and have water forced through them to get them clean? Did the outer mini-tub remain stationary while the agitator forced the turnover to occur?
Does this machine have any outer tub? I notice I'm not seeing any tub going behind the basket, but I think there is. Hopefully there's a tub that protects it, but I'm sure there is. Is there?

Basically, the Mini Basket turned the regular wash basket into an outer tub when it has no clothes.
Love the total simplicity of the four selection switches! Really gives full control over the machine.

The filter flo I used to have was the one with wood-toned control panel.
We had a GE filter flo that was probably new during the late 80's, early
90's it sounded like it was 600 RPM.

So... I've seen a few of these "mini baskets" why do they have them and what differancy does it make vs just using the whole maching?

Looks like they just thrashed back and forth. There were no molded bottom fins to help facilitate rollover I believe.
I am not sure what happened with some of the sound. Could have been some feedback on the camera or something. Glad you enjoyed it though!

Outer tub should be going around slowly like a clock hand. At least during a normal load....don't remember if it did that on the 'Mini' setting.

they never had an indexing tub, Westinghouse had that and I have always thought it was counterproductive to the washing action
Does the "spray rinse" totally miss the mini-basket?
That spay rinse water doesn't seem to have contact the with laundry in the mini-basket during the first spin.
