    You're totally right, older laptop designs are way better in terms of repairability. But nowadays, even the most honest manufacturers followed the dark path opened by Apple and many others, realizing that planned obsolescence is a very strong concept and a good source of income.

      planned obsolescence and root kits/backdoor in the bios so the FBI can spy on people that raised hell at a school board meeting.

    • @levendlicht
      @levendlicht 7 місяців тому +1

      It''t not always planned obsolescence I think (exept Apple who deliberitly designs it that way). It has more to do with relative cheap chips that are now available that integrate multiple components in one chip. That is detrimental to the repairability of the device if the chip is not available, or the troubleshooting becomes more difficult.

    • @toolsarecool
      @toolsarecool 7 місяців тому

      The evil concept is not increased complexity, it’s deliberately not making repair possible by not providing access to parts and documentation to allow at least vetted repair shops to fix things. Chips without markings, no schematics, etc.
      And yes, the only reason is greed. Business is business and business must grow. Lorax, out! 😎

    This is exactly why I still use my Toshiba Tecra A8 as my main laptop and why I bought a Toshiba Portege Z30T-C from 2016 a couple of years ago for doing some other higher-end engineering work. Nothing beats Toshiba for quality and reliability.

      Tecra A8 - that's loyalty ! Just about quick enough esp. if you can run Windows 8 or 7. A DDR2-based lappy running Win 10 is pushing it a bit, for me. But the Tecra line always had a certain something, like IBM/lenovo thinkpads in a way

    you know Sorin.... I'm still using a Sony Vaio VPCSA (from 2011 - back then it was $1200+) because it's made of Magnesium and Aluminum chasis and a carbon fiber back screen (not a crappy flimsy plastic like the moderen laptops design) .. it's a 13.3" HD+ , Core i7 2nd Gen 3Ghz Dual Core.. 12GB Ram 512 Lif Raid 0 SSD + 2TB HDD running Windows 11 Pro 23H2 with no problems at all... A customer brought me one of these with two broken USB ports for repair. I bought a working C660 i3 from eBay this month for £50 which included an SSD, 6GB RAM, Windows 11 and Office 2019. At that price not worth repairing the old one ;) The SSD is well worth it, speeds the laptop up a lot.

    I still use a T400 lenovo thinkpad, for around 12 years. Everything is solid, just upgraded to SSD and got a ddr3 1600 and just works. Battery, screen, charger works. Of course, I use Linux enviroment on it, but even in my job using a i7 10a generation computer with 64GB ram memory, my laptop makes the same work. I had a Toshiba before this, and i still have it working.

That's how our world is going on, we are being charged for everything, soon our laptops, smartphones maybe will be on a subscription plan LOL, that's their dream.

    OMG, I'm using that very same laptop for university. It's manufacturing date is 2011. It had an issue where it wouldn't turn on after many years of not using. The issue was in the power supply. Sooo easy fix, just swap power cord and psu, and done. Very glad the case was that simple. And also, I very rarely hear laptops stop working beacuse of fault from psu. Old but gold

    Those C660 units are something of a "pinnacle" for repairability POV & it's all gone to the dogs since then. It's commercial pressure to minimise thinness, combine as much functionality into the fewest chips. Once I accidentally (honest!) threw a Toshiba Sat pro 4270 out of my car onto the tarmac & it carried on working ok, a few scuffs

  • @kennymanchester
    @kennymanchester 7 місяців тому +3

    There was definitely a "sweet spot" era where laptops (and Desktops) were standardizing key components and were normally repairable. The early early laptops from Compaq, before standard modules and interfaces, it was the wild wild west! In those early days with no standards it was a real test of skills to sort out all those ASICs and PLCs and proprietary memory configurations. I don't miss those days, but I agree moving forward is looking more and more fragile and troublesome.

    • @daffyduk77
      @daffyduk77 7 місяців тому

      yes, Compaq had some really batty ideas back in the day. Do you remember those old Compaq Pentium 1 & 2 base unit PCs, the whole ROM/BIOS setup thing was the most god-awful convoluted nightmare. The industrial-grade grey & blue IBM PCs of the same era were a walk in the park by comparison. And Dell Optis were pure joy

    I read a long time ago an answer that I liked. Here I transcribe it verbatim: "Manufacturing companies have "forgotten" the concept: We need to build a functional, durable product, appreciated (valued) by its owner and that when it breaks down, the basic knowledge of applied physics, allow us to solve it, in a simple, logical and as affordable way as possible". All the best.

    I agree with Sorin that some elements of old computers were realy nice, like changeable batteries, RAM and HDD. Even CPUs were socketed and could be upgraded.
    The answer to "what was wrong with old design" is the manufacturing costs. They cut the costs. And that's why we have all soldered, non-changeable and cheap.

    I have the same Toshiba C660 laptop. There were problems with it from the very beginning when it was new. The service replaced the keyboard and it didn't help. Just move the plug gently in the power socket and the laptop turns off. This problem still exists. I don't touch the power connector and the laptop can work 24 hours a day without any problems, I touch the plug inserted into the socket and the laptop turns off. So how do you explain that it's a keyboard and not a power socket?

    This reminds me of a class action against Chrysler, They got caught with software that would disable the fuel injectors, light and horn flashing, software in all 3 to 6 computers in the car. All because you opened the trunk with a key and then the passenger door reaching thrue the window to the inside handle. Yes that was one of many triggers in this booby trap software, that 60 start-stops cycles later, would total the car. If you changed one of those computers, without taking it to Chrysler, 60 start-stops cycles later all of the computers would be disabled. Of course the computer knew the date and mileage so not to self destruct during the warranty. Don't try to look this up on Google, it will be blocked, You have to use a proxy server in Europe. Chrysler, GM, and Ford all settled out of court, to reprogram those computers at no cost, but no compensation for all the totaled cars, looks like a bribe to me.

    Consumers want more for less so to cut costs manufacturers dont make things like they used to, they make the manufacturing process as cheap as they can which is why I believe keyboards are integrated in to the case with the motherboard screwed on to the keyboard where they used to be screwed in to the bottom of a laptop case. Consumers have gotten what they asked for, cheaper laptops - you can get a laptop for just £150 NEW - is it worth repairing in years to come? No. False economy as a well built/designed/expensive laptop can last a lifetime as it's worth repairing etc.

    In the end, everything comes to the money. Not just with laptops, with everything. Our societies revolve around money. Everybody wants more money and this is the end result.

      Probably software work, like reinstalling Windows all day long, and do not want to waste time to diagnose hardware issues. If you have a high volume of software issues, you can afford to ditch hardware issues. Or maybe they do not have skilled techs.

    Whats wrong with the design ..... a 4kg laptop and 2hour battery life.
    Versus a glued together laptop .... 1kg and 8hours of battery life.
    Now choose!
    An all metal VW Beetle vs a glued together carbon fiber F1 car .... now choose.
    A beautifully crafted carriage and a horse vs a car. And on a cold winters night
    you can sleep with the horse to keep you warm .... now choose.

      "Whats wrong with the design ..... a 4kg laptop and 2hour battery life.
      Versus a glued together laptop .... 1kg and 8hours of battery life." - one is throwaway when something goes wrong, the other one isn't. Now choose. Also, C660s weigh in at 2.64kg, for the record. And modern cars increasingly need to be serviced expensively by just a few highly-equipped tech operations, not just any old guy in your local area

      The improved battery life is to a big extent due to recent low-power cpu & memory as opposed to the laptop design & manufacturing

      Yes, the C660s are no heavyweight . Unless you're referring to pretty recent kit.

      The old stuff was built to last and with ease of repair in mind. Today's stuff is way faster, but being mostly glued
      together, it is not intended to be repaired. Or at least repairs require messy gluing everything back together. And if
      you find yourself with a modern phone and laptop, in the desert in the midday sun, these gadgets are very likely to
      become de-glued, unstuck, and fall apart in your hands. Different standards. And knowing these pros and cons,
      you make your choice ... rugged reliability and longevity vs short-lived speed. And both old and new have at times
      included pleasing aesthetics. We live in a fast and cheap throw away society. But, when people get old: they hold
      onto the old stuff. The throw away stuff ... has been thrown away. And the old stuff ... holds stupendous value. As
      I said, you can't really compare the old and the new: different standards apply.
