- Welcome to Edmunds’ U-Drags, our series of down-and-back drag races! In this video, we put two of the latest and greatest supercars against each other: the absurdly expensive McLaren 765LT vs. the all-new (and glorious-sounding) Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Does the Z06 have the power to take down the best from McLaren? Or do you really get what you pay for? Edmunds’ Clint Simone covers it all in the video above. What is a U-Drag race?
A U-Drag race consists of both cars heading down the track like a standard drag race, then braking hard, flipping around and then heading back.

765LT is next level car vs the Z06. Hence, the next level price . Z06 vs R8GT vs 600LT vs Technica is way more appropriate, IMHO.
seeing how ppl are selling these z06s with markup for 300k i would be going 765lt before that for the money
would like to see plaid vs 765lt with the shorter track gearing and dragtimes driving because he has gottin mid to low 9s with the 765lt on the streets. and then gt500 vs z06 since gt500 beat regular c8 and we have seen base 80k gt500s start pulling from top option 185k z06 around 120 130mph gt500 starts pulling away which shocks me

Mclaren has a lot more than just 100 hp more. Has around 850hp when put on a dyno

@@_Ambition124 Can't argue about the weight though, that 765 is pretty light for a "mainstream" supercar. Obviously weight makes a huge difference in acceleration, coupled with +800hp that thing just flies when given the chance. The Z06 is just a great value given its performance, what a machine!
Also has twin turbos to c8 naturally aspirated and barely has more horse power lmfao

yes! It offers exactly what commentator states... it's a very good taste of all the important skills sets. i own a C8 Z07. It's great on street and then the track, tho to change its personality to the max, u need to sets of rubber & rims alongwith a good alignment specialist for before & after adjustment

This is an excellent format for a race - testing launch, acceleration, braking, cornering, and balance in a very concise format. I'd argue that Edmunds is killing it with this U-drag series. Well done!

@davidhubbard7573 That's assuming it makes it down the track. The 170 is a Dodge after all. That being said, both the Demon and the 170 are drag cars, and that's pretty much all they can do.
I’d like to see how much closer the race would be with a 720S.
From the dig and the roll section, easily 720s. The Z06 w/Z07 will catch up in the corner. But that's 2 sections to the 720s to the Corvettes 1 section. So ultimately 720s will probably win.
I think the 600LT would be a better matchup.
I don't know, the 720s makes more power and weighs hundreds of pounds less. The Z06 would have a better chance on a twisty track than in a straight line
Z06 is more comparable to the 600LT or 570S.
Everytime people compere the Corvette they always bring a car with a list 100hp more, why not a 600 or a 720s

Even as a McLaren fan (and someone who is definitely not a fan of the Z06), I think this is a good test for the Chevy... to see how close it can run to a much more expensive, focused car. Yes, it's a pretty big gap, ut the Z06 performs very respectably, all things considered. It doesn't meet the 765LT in performance, but still punches way above it's weight and that's awesome to see. The Z06's power and traction off the line is very impressive.
Just add a couple turbos.

I think the weight difference is more impressive. You can always put more power on any car regardless if it's forced or na, but having 600lbs of weight difference is freaking outstanding.
10x more entertaining than watching a regular 1/4 mile.
Problem is this actually involves driver skill and one driver is clearly more competent than the other here.
I found this channel this day and I'm admitted this is epic channel..not just only drag races but you put everything for car enthusiast will love it 👉👍
I have a C4, have driven C7s and C8s and liter bikes, and have also driven the 720S. The 720S is ungodly fast AND quick, handles really well at speed, and while you really have to use a lot of force with the brakes they are excellent. I found that once the turbos were spooled up the car took off like it got a huge kick in the tail... 30 to 100 is over in a flash. The 720S was as fast or faster than the fastest motorcycles I've ridden. The 765's acceleration must be even more brutal with 5% more HP and a lighter vehicle. Given the difference in the power-to-weight ratios, the Z06 had no chance. That it got beat by the Z06 in 0-60 during the first race was a freak of nature... must have had warmer tires. I'd love to have a Z06... but if I could have any car it would be the McLaren.
I think we'll have to wait for the Chevy ZR1 Zora before this is a little more fair. Let's try it again in a couple of years, if Chevy follows through with the ZR1

765LT already makes about 760 hp, on the dyno
Rumours have it that the new ZR1 is going to make 810 hp, presumably at the crank

The heat waves coming off the McLaren is insane that it produces that amount of heat.
It also shows the aerodynamics of that car is on point..
And it was a cold cold day, too.
That active aero definitely made a difference. I would like to see a Z06 without the Z07 package in this race as as Chevy admits it’s faster.

I just track days at Thunderhill east. A 765LT was parked next to my Mustang in the shade. I watched him zoom by at different places on track. Visible pulling away from the other cars in his class. Super cool owner too.
This test is so impressive to an extent that it should be in ALL DRAG RACES! Bravo to whoever made this amazing idea as it shows not just drag but in addition brake and cornering without renting a circuit 👏🏼
It's not a new idea. This is how land speed records are tested in general
It is so rare to actually be able to SEE the speed of a car from the drivers pov but you could definitely see the insane speed with the 765 pov
McLaren: Half-a-million dollar hypercar with 85 more HP, and 130 more lb-ft of torque...and over SIX HUNDRED pounds lighter. As awesome as the new Z06 is, it's totally outgunned here. I'm surprised at how close the Z06 actually kept it. Impressive showing for the American beauty & beast.

This may be crazy, but I'd like to see either of these against a Tesla Model S plaid which should smoke both of these through the quarter mile, but how much will it lose on the braking and cornering. Interesting, no?

Wow that McLaren is next level fast. So impressive. Given the crazy markup on the Z06 and the crazy low prices on a 720S, I would definitely go 720s. Would love to see the 720s vs Z06 in U Drag
720 would be a better comparison, 765 has a closer ratio gearbox
If you go to the right dealer and there are many of them, you won't pay over sticker, of course if you are in Californication you will get screwed.I will get mine this spring or summer(depending on production) at sticker, getting the Z06 HTC sticker is $140k and that's what I'm paying not counting sales tx here in Michigan.
720’s are $275k+.

Excellent videos series, and exactly what I expected. I own a GT2RS and know not to mess with a 765LT in straight acceleration. I would love to have a run at it in this format though. Great concept.
Glad to see U-Drag back. For a car costing nearly 1/4th, the Corvette had no business staying even as close as it did.

I really appreciate how you guys did a running lap in between the races where you discussed the results and simultaneously let the brakes take a breather and gave the cars a cool-down. I see so many channels where they do a race and SLAM on the brakes and just sit there, letting the pads cook on the rotor after an immense deceleration. Keep up the good work, loved the video.
Won’t matter. Those are carbon ceramic pads and rotors on the 765. They cool down in 60 seconds.
This is by far the best way to test a car quickly. WELL DONE!

Edit : i saw a lot of C6 ZR1s which has less power and still beating it and they also fully stock .

That 765LT is almost lose to Z06 , Z06 did better 0~60 launch time , it has less power and naturally aspirated too but if it has same power , it will definitely beat that cocky overpriced and very overrated 765LT so easily .

I'm in England, picked up my Z06 last weekend, now available in RHD unfortunately the weather hasn't allowed me to enjoy it yet, rained every day since I picked it up, can't wait for next week, forecast good, but despite the limited use, it puts a big smile on my face just looking at it, and driving it is phenomenal

600lbs less and 100 more HP with the advantage of turbo torque, we knew it wasn't going to go well just based on the spec sheet. That said there is nothing in the Z06s price range that competes so I'm happy to hear a McLaren and a chevy can be compared. A win for the USA in my opinion.
This is some serious cope. A 720S is similar priced (even cheaper) compared to the Z06 on the open market and its performance is barely behind the 765. Plenty of cars that can compete at the current Z06 $180k range.

Believe me price have nothing to do here ,you are not gonna pay 400k $ for 130fp of toque and 85 hp more and 600libs lighter because if you go and buy a vette c8 z06 in germany or italy for 2ice the price that cars in América lets Just say that the mclaren is about 380k dollars in América and the c8z06 is 162k dollars in europe so its no 500k dóllars it only 220k more expencive lol i Stiller take the c8 any time over the mclaren because reliability is way superior and no need to mod it , to me cornering performance is my point over straight brutal speed

The fact that a Corvette is being compared with a Mclaren says it all, and at 1/3 the price; thats definitely a victory for GM, and this is a Z06, can't wait to see what GM does for a C8 ZR1, flat plane crank V8 to the rear and a strong electric motor moving the front tires anyone?

765LT has close to 850PS and with such little weight for its class we are talking about a missile on wheels. Z06 is simply a very fast car.
To be fair, they're a lot more comparable on a track, but that aero on the Z06 along with the high weight, flat plane torque compared to turbo torque, and less power won't hold up against even a Huracán or McLaren GT in a roll, much less the 765LT. Here to hoping for a twin turbo Z06 with active aero can provide more realistic competition

@@a.m.4049 The z07 probably wouldn't be any faster with the amateur drivers and only one corner. The car selection here is just bad for a competitive comparison. But nearly half a million for the McLaren the Z06 has far better performance per dollar. Koenigsegg vs McLaren would be similar results

I think the Z06 did amazing for being like 1/3 the cost. Who would have thought a corvette would be drag racing a Mclaren 10 years ago. Also, when the Zora comes out it will be much closer. Both amazing cars!
10 years ago the mp4-12c had 615hp and a zr1 had 638hp and when you take that generation’s comparison to this one in the video, you see that the weight difference between the corvette and it’s competitor is more prominent now, it’s not as crazy as you thought

interesting tidbit for the gm bashers. the MagneRide suspensions in alot of cars where initially designed by gm/Delphi and are used by GM/Holden/Audi/Acura/mustang/Ferrari and Lamborghini.and im sure there are more....

@@johnh1932the Zo6 would still lose but I'd figure the gap would be closer. Even if both cars weighed the same the vette isn't overcoming the 170hp difference or the aerodynamic drag from the Zo7 package on it.
A lot of people on here are forgetting the Zo6's target is the 911 gt3 of which it just beats out at willow springs. That said the Zo6 did well for itself being outclassed here
@@JJsGA what z06 would be betting on is the aero allowing it carry the speed through the turns. the z07 package isn't a drag racing package its a racing on a track package so its a detriment in drag racing.

I am litterally saying the Z07 package is SLOWING IT DOWN. The Z06 in the video has the ZO7 package....which as you said, isn't a drag package but a track one.

Pretty well what I expected, the Corvette is a great car but it is clearly outclassed up against a McLaren, the price difference is also unbelievable.
When that boost hooks up and the traction is steady, the 765 it just goes. Hoping the ZR1 Corvette gets some form of boost like the older ZR1’s probably will thankfully. But man the turbos in the 765LT just make it go!

Yeah, but they're both beasts of cars - the fact that they did this race is pretty sweet, IMO. Both of these cars are basically THE most desirable at their respective price points. That being said, a much more fair race would be against a regular 720s. The Z06 does have one advantage though - those carbon fiber wheels boy!
I do wonder how much weight would be saved if they removed the rear trunk area, with the Corvette's rear end just having the engine compartment 🤔
To the stupid ducks out there: it doesn't always have to be an exact matchup to film something like this. It could have been how the Vette was able to hang with the McLaren and therefore is a good bargain.

I took my Roush Mustang up over 155 mph. 5th gear redlined, however fast that is. If you're not used to it, it's a different world up there. I would never recommend that to anybody. If you buy one of these cars to drive fast, please get a membership at a local race track.
As a mclaren tech I can certify that the LT is true terror. Z06 is rad n all. But…. Maybe a 720 or GT would be a better comparison. Rad vid tho

Me as well except lets make it a CFTP car which will be able to accelerate and exit the U-turn portion much harder due to the Cup IIs.

Love both cars. The wing on the vette is better for road courses, not drag racing. However, I'm sure the extra hp and lighter weight of the McClaren helped out too

Corvette is a Na high revving track monster . It’s heavier and has a lot less torque and hp . It’s an amazing machine still and likely performance car of the year

Yeah, shitty quarter mile too (10.9 seconds) and it's overall time was slower than the C8 Stingray they raced before in a previous video

Yet it will be easier to up the power in the Corvette. Which many end up doing. I don't think it would take all that much to bring the Corvette up to the same speed
Twin turbo power vs naturally aspirated! 755hp vs 670hp! 460 pound feet vs 590 pound feet! 2978 to 3060lbs (McLaren) 3535-3637lbs ( Z06) The McLaren was gonna win no matter what. It has all of the power to weight advantages over the Z06, but the Z06 will still be my weapon of choice. Great, exciting but predictable race and outcome. All of this is in MY OPINION
This is actually thrilling to watch. Thanks for the vid. IMO, the 765LT with a price of nearly $500K, I would take Z06 any day at just 1/3 the price. But of course if I was a billionaire and money didn't even matter, then I would get both: Z06 for myself to drive on the track and 765LT to let a professional driver to drive me on the track.
Thats kind of the point - not everyone can afford a Mclaren - let alone a 765lt…

Total otherworldly domination from the 765LT as expected. Just because the corvette is being compared here doesn’t give it a value proposition given the sheer differences in performance.
