Also, the devs did dirty to the upgraded versions of Fortress and Antique. Conditional damage, capped to a mediocre value?! Meanwhile, Execute amplifies damage to ridiculous values, Treasure breaks the game, Manatech gives you Infinite Bone... Worse than that, only Hidden Blade?
Yeah I was surprised when I saw they give like... +100% or so at best in most cases. The fact Spoils uninorically gives you more... wow..
No matter how little damage you take during this run I’m pretty sure this could be considered self harm...

Shield's a good boy. Every time I was struggling to to up another Mirror level back when it came out he had my back.
Coziness really is just the best thing in the universe for him. Free cooldown is just good and the crit chance really closes some of the gap on the damage you miss out on from building so defensive. Shield's a fine lad.
The slime with the speed boost of the bomber running from the suc was the funniest thing I've ever seen

Got really lucky and found the berserker and a million health barrier / damage reduction items in the run. Combined with the ogre totem tanking the first hero wasn’t even an issue. Definitely didn’t expect to win a run before unlocking the revive ability

And that's why this is the best beginner build. Sure it takes two and a half fucking hours to clear, but also you won't ever be at risk of dying and you'll be able to see all of the bosses' moves and then some.
I do find it funny that dark mirror witch is so buried under all the technology she looks concerned.

Inspired by you talking about this run in the past I used shield like this from dark mirror 6-10 to unlock all of the machines, and beat dark little skull and emporer on 10, so that I could turn it back down to 5 where i found it most fun to play but with all the benefits.

I commented a few videos back asking for the shield boy defense run because I was stuck on dm10. The next day I was doing a defense ghoul build with revenge and berserker. I got balrog and pivoted into a revenge build and absolutely wrecked dad. Bone scream revenge balrog is crazy
Funny enough one of the safest but still offensive builds is shield/warrior with four antique, 4 courage, 2 revenge and 2 fortress. Of course depends on the items but pretty easy to get thanks to being able to slot skills in. Attendant's Pauldrons and Architect's Breastplate are pretty key however. Too bad Architect's Breastplate isn't busted with Warrior anymore though. Of course you might luck out with some good prince boxes or clone stamps. Some good fill ins to have offence if you can't find the best items are the Wheel and the gravity generator though that doesn't do much for Warrior it really helps out Shields offence if you are spamming skills to build shield.
Collection desire instead of the dark ability that builds shield per room and one of the skill damage increasing dark abilities instead of Super Baby as it is really overkill at that point and boom you can kill quick and still be relatively safe. If you have two in treasure and or Kolbold while you are finding the key items you can focus on skul rooms as well.
Act 1 is hell though.
My first run in the new update was a Heracles full defense build that used all the s. Pretty effective, but man I feel your pain on the damage, 1.5hours to get to dad

it helps with clearing normal rooms and also becomes your main source of damage

You know what would have been fantastic? The chosen wariors armor. Althou it doesnt realy work on dark skul or alexander. But the dad fight is very snug with it.

I’d highly recommend taking Minotaur with shield to get you through the beginning stages easy, so you can ramp up with shield
Got stuck in hard mode 7 for a while mainly cause I keep trying to do achievements but saw this video and decided to do a shield run and got a crazy shield plus herc omen run and beat hero without dying
Shield with Decayed Heart reminds me of that super cursed Bofuri(I think?) build Beelz did on stream that time.

Bro, after that 2,5 hour action of shield, some fast clown action would be cool
soooo.... first time you go past "dark form dad" the alexander fight sets you on a dps check timer and if you go full defense then you will almost guaranteed fail (not that that would happen to me and make me insanely angry and quit the game for like a week or something) but yeah maybe do als beelz was saying and take a 50/50 mix of damage and tankyness atleast for the first time (after you beat it once there wont be a dps check anymore)

I remember asking you to showcase a heavy defense build a year and a half/two years ago because you always said defensive builds are great, but never used them...Come to think of it, I'm not even sure if I finished that video because it was so long. Needless to say, I know why you don't do much defense, but I guess the new people don't.
I use to struggle in skull so bad my first time ever clearing it was with the shield skull. I’ve gotten pretty good now. For some reason I always end up winning with beserker🤷🏿♂️

I beat the king for the first time with maxed shield boy. But the inscription I had maxed was arms. I shredded his hp!
I would say The Ring is A tier. It's good for everyone, but items that specifically target your skull's strengths are still better, like Nether Mana Supressor or Hope Slasher, and especially Olive Tree Cudgel...so I guess it's better than most items unique and under, but you wouldn't trade another legendary for it. As such, I don't think it's the best item in the game, but I would put it at the top of A tier.
I would 100% trade certain items for the ring. The passives it gives are just insane and Treasure is one of the top 3 inscriptions in the game currently. Items like the Cudgel are good, same with Nether Mana but those specifically try and target Magic or Physical. If the ring shows up, it doesn't matter you could be doing a defense only build and it's still doing the job.
Do a modded rigged run with ALL fairy tale items (plus if possible fairy tale clone stamp and princess box, not necessary tho). I'd love to see that type of run. Dont forget omen spirit.

How many types of tanking are there? Mitigation tanking, aka blocking and shielding and bubbling through stuff; Regeneration tanking, when the harder they hit you the faster you can regen, imo vampire tanks that lifeleech on hit are either here or as their separate half-dps role; Dodge tanks? When even hitting you is a challenge but you keep them on you with constant taunts or damage, is this even considered tanking? Probably yes...
Physical mitigation (shield), magical mitigation (protection magic), leech/heal (vampirism etc), dodge, deflect/parry, summons (summoning minions to get hit for you, chaining them together so you never get touched), reflection (send damage back).

I wish the devs reworked it and made item’s effect stackable with dark ability as well as poisoning description. Would be nice to see broken builds with poisons
Not necessarily. You can take the Fang and replace Kingslayer with a different dark ability. Depends if you really want the Fang to take up one of your item spaces, of Kingslayer to take up a dark ability slot. I rarely use Kingslayer these days so effects like Chimera or Spartacus insta kill are welcome. Doing a poison build helps too I suppose.
dude you should have gone fortress with full retaliation items, cause it seem like you don't really need the hp, like that no moving dad fight you did before, but this time you move.

31:45 Am I the only one who say his bone fragments jump from 70 to 79? Beelz should’ve been at 93 after breaking great warlock, not 102. I don’t know if this is some pro tech I don’t know or if it even changes anything at the end of the day, but this peeves me out
A couple things. The first jump from 70-79 is from one of the dark tech device perks. I can't remember which difficulty unlocks it but somewhere between 5-8 for sure. I also get bonus gold from opening chests. I gain a small bonus of fragments when looting skull piles.

edit at 11:50 : hmm beelz i think for once you actually been cursed with the good items. i mean everyone knows that there is that one item you see every run but don't like or just isn't for this run and that is what i call being cursed with an item . . . but i think in this case you actually been cursed to find the tree cudgel . . . watch it show up on the magic runs too

What was the name of that old inscription that lowered your damage every time you got hit? It worked like Reckless Posture, but without a limit. The inscription is still in the game, it just doesn't do what it use to do.

@@Beelz55 Nor do I. I know it's one of the inscriptions that's still in the game, they just nerfed the hell out of it...or maybe not. Have they removed inscriptions? I think they removed inscriptions in the big inscription update, so it may not even be in the game anymore.
@@AdonanS They've removed them and repurposed some. Things like Volcano are gone completely. Piercing Winds is like.... 2-3 items now.

48:01 question about the barrier's crit rate increase though, is it only for the item's barrier which activates at 30 hp, or is it all barrier? considering shield almost always have a barrier, it could potentially be a permanent 30% cr for the shield boi with a relic and revenge
