There was "no way out from the crowd". Either you stayed there... or if you would leave - will not get back. As the crowd was so huge and so many police and army present. We took our spots at 10 am. The concert started at 3 or 4 pm. And there were 3 acts before Metallica. So I guess they started playing at 7pm. That means we were stuck there at one place for 11 hours straight. LOL. And no toiliets )

This concert was part of the Monster of Rock concert series, it was a free concert and 500K tickets were handed out but people just kept coming. They stopped counting at 1.6 million and I've heard estimates of 1.8 million. This concert was just after the Soviet Union fell and this was the first taste of freedom and western culture they had experienced, thus the massive celebration. AC/DC, Pantera, The Black Crows, and Queensryche were also there. 53 people died during this concert, but they died happy and free.

Gotta agree....Jason Newsted was one of the greatest "hype men" in metal. I hung my head when he left the band.
Like others are saying.....Creeping Death, Sad But True and Harvester Of Sorrow from this show are mind blowing. The energy level is off the charts.
If you want "One" live....check out the version from Seattle '89.

I read somewhere a while back, that 1.6 million was where they stopped counting, and people just kept coming into Tushino Airfield in Moscow, Russia, September 28, 1991. A 1 square mile airfield, that held the Monsters Of Rock Concert. I believe the articular said that an "Estimated" 2.2 million was a more accurate count.

This was only the 2nd foreign performer in a concert ever allowed in the USSR.
The Soviet Union would officially dissolve a few months later.
It was the Monsters of Rock tour which also included AC/DC, Black Crowes, Pantera, and the local band Electro Shock Therapy.
It was a free concert so no one was able to take official attendance which is why it doesn't have a world record.
Contrary to lore, there were NO deaths only a few dozen injuries.

I wish I had just a dollar for every time I've heard people describe the crowd there, as a "sea of people", although that IS a VERY accurate description of it. I saw them twice during their "black album" tour, & they put on an amazing show at both concerts! Although I still love them after all these years, I'm gonna have to disagree with you, & say that that was one Metallica concert, that I'm glad I missed out on. You're one of the few reaction channels that remembers to mention one important thing "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" The fall of the Soviet Union was WHY Metallic had a crowd that size. I believe it was Michael Jackson and Elton John that had concerts bigger with some insane amount of over four million (I could be off in quoting that number just know it was them). Russia was opened up and the people wanted everything about western culture they had been deprived of forever.

I also stopped hearing them like you, but i stop after the Load album, i not really liked this album and around this time i start hearing other bands more. The S&M album was first new Metallica album i'd buy after many years.

Iconic artists with the ability to reach the top of the World music scene. You should check out John Farnham, he does a cover version of The Beatles classic song Help with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra that will make you sit up and listen, he has a voice that can tackle just about all genres; referred to as The Voice in Australia, due to his signature song You're The Voice live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He has done duets with both Australian and International artists, one in particular is with Olivia Newton John; they sing Please Don't Ask Me from The Main Event Concert, their performance is emotional, intriguing and spellbinding.
