I think the biggest standout was the last song of the festival;, For those about to rock - AC/DC it mostly focused on the crowd captured at different times through out the day/night then the cool surprise towards the end of the song. To Think AC/DC were the headline band when Metallica were at there peak and Pantera had just arrived with Cowboys from Hell album and about to take the crown from Metallica as the baddest Metal band on the planet.
@claudio matamoros there was 2M people total, watching Metallica was 1.5M from what i remember from the time, the military was the one counting, since it was free there were no tickets so someone had to keep a count. and yes i'm that old, watching this on TV was unreal.
Sisters, Most amazing part is that Metallica still play for packed stadiums today like they did in 1991. I have seen them played during their famous black album that includes Enter Sandman in Miami, Florida in 1992.

I was a 16yo boy in the soviet bloc at that time, it was a historic moment. There's nothing to get you high like freedom. I love watching reactions to this, and how most of the people reacting don't even understand the significance of what they're watching at the moment. :D

What they did was to have a huge free music festival to celebrate. A lot of big western bands were invited and played during this concert. This was the first time an event like this happened in the former Soviet Union. The Berlin Wall had just fallen.

The helicopters were actually that of the armed forces in Moscow Russia. If you were able to watch this whole concert,you would see footage of the concert goers being beaten with clubs because they don't understand the release of energy back and forth between the band and their fans! Please react to creeping death from this same concert or anything from their concert in seattle 1989 this is would be Metallica at their prime.The energy which is passed back and forth from the band to the fans is just insane. To answer the sisters question; The song is about SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), or in other words children going to sleep and not waking up, so yes, it is about death, but a very specific and sad form of death. It is also based on the belief that the story of Peter Pan is that Peter Pan visits children that are about to die a tragic and painful death and instead takes them in their sleep to “Never Never Land”. In essence, he is killing the children, but in doing so he is sparing them the pain they would have felt had he not.
As mentioned before, it is about a child that has nightmares. In America, children are taught that the Sand man must come at night because in the morning, there appears to be a speck of "sand" in the red part of the eye socket near the forehead (sorry, I don't know what it's called). So, "Enter Sandman" refers to someone falling asleep, so the sand man comes.

I've seen Metallica live four times, and seen countless concert videos, and always assumed James must be really tall since he's always hunched over at the microphone. Nope. Shorter than me. Now, James, Lars and Kirk? TINY. The lesson here? You'll always look like a giant when you're surrounded by Lilliputians. ;-)
This concert was a historic event. The iron curtain had just fallen and this concert was the first of it's kind allowed in Russia. Time Warner put on this free concert to test out the new market. Several metal/rock bands were there. The Russian army that was there policing the event had no clue what was going on and a lot of people got beaten by them, I think some died.

This was a rare even in history because Russia at those times is not only Russia but The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. Ruled by a dictator at those time Mikhail Gorbachiv. This was their first concert and a short experience of the people of USSR of what freedom was before the collapse of USSR later that same year.

You might be over thinking it? The sandman is the guy that helps you sleep and sometimes dream but they are not always good dreams.
