I enjoy your videos so much. Plus the scripture readings are priceless.
Thank you sir for helping out with this issue. I have wondered many times what to do..💁☺
Possibly the most useful information you'll receive today. You'll seldom if ever clean an antique skillet that didn't have some type of buildup. Usually its hard to imagine someone eating out of it. It rarely happens but sometimes the labels are covered in buildup and after electrolysis it turns out to be a marked piece. I bought a gate mark skillet for $8 that was marked Erie when the crust was removed. The small issue was Erie didn't produce gate marks, other than that... lol There went my private island !
Love my cast iron. Griswold and Lodge pieces. Great advice.
Thank you so much I needed this. I love my easybeezy I am os glad you developed this seasoning I have done all my cast iron with it.
I was a machinist for 40 years and I worked with cast iron everyday. If I had to scrub every piece of iron that was contaminated, I'd still be working on the first job I started. We had two methods for removing gunk. First was sandblasting. This would quickly remove most problems but not everyone has access to a blaster. The second method was used on smaller items such as pans or skillets. We used a lye bath. One pound of pure lye in 5 gallons of water. This method took longer but works to remove everything stuck to the iron. If the gunk is really bad and as hard as concrete, this will require more time. Minimum time is 24 hours and the maximum time shouldn't exceed five days. Warning: do not add water to lye, add lye to water. Let it soak and the gunk will come off pretty easy. You will need to season the pan again but your skillet will be like new afterwards...
Interesting info. (Never knew the LYE => WATER rule.)
That said... who wants a skillet that is "like knew"? Right? We want one that is well worn! [wink emoji]
Thanks, I've waiting for what to do with my Grandma's old skillet. The surface is great, but the bottom and sides need help. It's 90 to 100 years old and cooks great! Better to try this rather than a lye bath!
Thank you. Can't number the people I have told to clean their C.I. with hot water, soap and some 4/0 steel wool. By the time you get to shiny metal, your fingers will be bleeding. Now I have a video to send them.
This is great. I can't bring myself to use those harsh chemicals, eg. lye or oven cleaner, not only for the pan, but to dispose of it down the drain....I'm afraid of what it would do to the old pipes in my house and the city sewage line.
Thanks so much. God bless you.
Thanks, I was beginning to think I was going to have to redo my whole pan by stripping it down and starting the seasoning process all over.
Thanks for this video. I often roast whole chickens in my #10 & #12 cast iron skillets. I preheat the skillet in the oven, then sear the bottom and both sides of the chicken before throwing the skillet into the oven. Splattering fat finds its way onto the skillet interior & exterior sides and becomes baked on. I will have to try this method when the gunk builds up a bit.
Amen.
Amen
That’s a purdy pan 😊
Good Morning ! Thank You. TAKE CARE..
I have an old, small skillet that was my grandmother's. It has a little hole, maybe 1/16 of an inch, maybe smaller. It kind of looks like it was stabbed with an icepick.😅 Is it still safe to use?
Amen and Amen 🙏
I enjoy your videos and went out ironing today . I found a griswald Erie #8 749 oval 21” griddle, roaster . Any ideas what the value might be ????. I can’t find much on them online
. I did buy a puritan #7 1503 for 28.99, a lodge 3 notch #8 raised 2 for 14.99. Think I did ok
Have you ever tried to sear Tuna steaks? I have not had perfect luck searing and keeping the middle still a bit rare?
The heat ring makes the skillets get gunky. I decided to strip mine in a lye bath and start over. One thing I have leaned, after the first major seasoning, don't season the bottom of the skillet any more.
You got it looking like new money I have one Birmingham stove that I don't cook nothing but fried taters
i season my iron on a charcoal grill,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
