One of the most interesting+controversial technical trivia with the R35 GT-R was that its 'Godfather' Mizuno Kazutoshi intentionally wanted the R35 GT-R to be heavy. This obviously goes against accepted wisdom for developing a good sportscar, but he believes that by reducing a road going sportscar's weight without the downforce levels of a racing car, it compromises on high speed stability. Here are some quotes he made in several car magazine interviews: "Other car designers develop a car as a unit. I develop the car's essentials. I decide the tyre size. The most effective contact pressure decides the amount of kilograms we should include; for the best tyre grip. From these situations I calculate and decide car weight. " "Always [motoring] journalists say: "Lighter is better, lighter is better... I don't necessarily think so. The most effective tyre contact is essential, and it's these essentials that decide things like weight." “So, how do you make a car? I can show you a very easy example. Imagine a high-speed corner in an F1 car, and it is using the best tyres in the world. An F1 car weighs 560kg, more than 600kg with the driver. How much downforce does an F1 car generate? Currently, it is around 1,300kg. So what is the total weight? 1,860kg [about the same as a GT-R with the driver on board, coincidentally]. A GT1 racing car weighs between 1,200 and 1,300kg. Plus downforce of 600kg, the actual weight on the car is 1,800kg… you see, very easy!” Having lived in Japan, it is a collectivist culture and the majority of people there avoid to speak their mind, to avoid confrontation. Mizuno san is definitely not the typical Japanese and I guess from his expertise from his racing career, is very vocal. Its interesting to see people like him exist in the car industry.
@@smilepermile8165 I was just making a quick comment based on what you've said. I'm in no position to debate with an engineer or professional driver, but many other engineers, from brands who aren't currently on the verge of total bankruptcy and danger of closing down, think the exact opposite of what Mizuno-san said; hence why Ferrari, Lamborghini, Audi (i know right?) Lotus, Alfa Romeo and others try to achieve proper balance and lightness for their sporty cars. Kinda ironic, isn't it? PS: Also, Mizuno said that "less weight means less stability at high speeds", but how is that even possible if the car is designed with proper aerodynamics?
@@ilpatongi I did say in my original comment "controversial technical trivia" and "This obviously goes against accepted wisdom for developing a good sportscar". I'm sure Mizuno san is also aware that he is very much in the minority with that thought process he came up with. But if he wants the GT-R to have stability at high speeds, that is most likely the reason why he came up with those points.

I own a nice little tuned 2015 GT-R. It’s a loud, raucous, clunking, mechanical sounding beast that puts a huge smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. Really enjoyed the review.
I was in the same situation : I hated the car when it went on sale because of the fanboys and the "anti-purist" architecture (4x4, computerized central diff, 1.700kg), then modern car came in and I start looking at the R35 from a different angle. Then 1 year ago, I flew to Japan, rented one for 4 days, absolutely trashed it on the Fuji roads and my opinion totally changed. I want one and I will buy one soon.
On the subject of weight, my GT-R spends a lot of time on Exmoor. Lots of crests and troughs, bumps and dips and it totally belies any aspect of weight I have ever experienced or read about. It absolutely flies over the rough roads in a way nothing else can manage. I’ve never grounded it over the worst of roads regardless of speed whereas most sports or supercars would have their undersides scraping the road. The latest era of these cars are really incredible and in my experience fabulously reliable. TBO, I have two (one is the 50th Anniversary version 2019, the other 2017). I have never experienced a fault on either in a combined 12,000 miles. I wish I could say the same about latest generation Porsches.

Actually... they are a lot less to run than you say... the aftermarket scene means you can buy stuff at a fraction of the price, of that of main dealers. I ran one for almost 10 years... utterly reliable and a total weapon with some choice mods. At 650hp, 600lbft, they are almost unbeatable, other than some exoctica costing 5 times more. I can do easy sub 8min on the Nurburgring, lap after lap, without anything required but fuel.... They are the BEST easy to love with Supercar, bar none. Even Porsche can’t compare. The running costs of them are WAY higher.
One fun experience with GT-R: I had a photoshoot with one in 2019. It was an early 2009 car with 800hp HKS upgrade (plus new gearbox upgrade from Dodson). After we finished, we decided to try making an acceleration footage, with my friend riding shotgun in the car. Launch control on, left foot off the brake pedal, and the GT-R just shoots away into the horizon. The acceleration was so violent, my friend's phone literally flew backwards and hit his face. I think the owner apologised for the small incident, but all of us just laughed it off.

The only GT-R after the BNR32 to capture some of the previous magic of its predecessor offering supercar performance for a fraction of the cost and punching well above its weight class.
@@nikomoin7604 exactly key word in your "opinion" which means its not backed by facts. You're also wrong, there were no rules or regulations on power restrictions in the Japanese auto market. If there were then supercars wouldn't have been available to buy in the late 90s and early 00s. It was a simple agreement amongst auto manufacturers to prevent a horsepower war in which wasn't even followed as most of these cars made 350bhp. The BNR34 didn't offer anywhere near supercar performance at a fraction. The BNR34 isn't even remotely a fast car from the factory. I've owned 3 GT-Rs so I know what I'm talking about. The BNR34 couldn't even beat a Evo VII GSR in the rain at Tsukuba. The overwhelming competition and Nissans mentality to only refine the car vs make large improvements as they did with the R35 was the Skyline's downfall. The BNR34 was used as a floor wipe by all of the successor in which its predecessor the BNR32 was once in competition with. The 360 Modena, GT3, GT2, E46 M3, Evo VII RS, STI Spec C, NSX Type S, were all faster dominating the BNR34 to the point Nissan went back to the drawing board with the car to to once again produce a supercar destroyer as they did in the late 80s. The BNR34 didn't get as much hate as the BCNR33 simply because it improved on the areas of concern however the story in motorsports and with the production cars remained the same.
came from modified evos into R35 I felt mine only really came alive after Litchfield had got it near 800bhp. Little bit tame feeling stock but an absolute animal on road modified (at what they call ‘LM750’ )
I loved the R35 GTR until I read about the possible servicing charges on them generally and maintenance, plus gear box reliability of older ones especially. Would still love to own one but not sure if a 2009-2016 worth the risk.
They are very cheap to run unless you are tracking it. Tracking cars is always expensive and with proper super cars that have wide tyres its more expensive then tracking a MX-5. There is nothing out there that gives the amazing experience as a value proposition even today.
The price is significantly more than when it launched, but has it increased more than other cars that can be directly compared between then and now - like an M3, M5, RS6, C63, etc. I would guess that the GT-R hasn't increased more than the others. I don't think you can simply compare the price and use an inflation calculator, unless you do that with the others too.
I've hammered one on a track years ago (A brand new 2014 one). Mindbendingly fast, beautifully made, and extremely capable, I just didn't find it engaging. Maybe I'm just used to driving old cars; This just felt too easy, like driving with cheats on. It's not that it isn't entertaining (get it on a straight and it is hilarious), but it's just really not rewarding. There's no fun to be had with matching shifts for example. And that's ok, it's a car built purely for speed and speed alone. I bet it makes an incredible car for eating up continents, and I would consider buying one if I could afford it. I believe you when you say it's a better road car than track car. I love the colour of this one. Really stands out against all the grey of every other car now.
Love these cars, but I'd want one of these AND the 370z Nismo. Just for the more usable fun of the NA V6 manual experience. Now, all we need is to see what you think of the 2020 Nismo edition... 🤔
Gtr is my choice over any super car simply for the price to performance you can get an early one quite cheap for what it is and they are really tuneable
Good as is ever Jay to follow this up after the other three colour is stunning it's a JDM dream car for me me again you got to applaud Nissan for saying this is Japanese sports car were not gonna copy anyone we're going to do her own thing apparently it was heavy on purpose because Nissan wanted it to handle better around the track and believe that having a heavier car would help with the traction and God did they get that right if you see proper race car drivers hoonigan these around a track it's unbelievable what the car can do, I think there's a video of Chris Harris doing it with a massive smile on his face. It will be good to see you try the Nismo version I think there was one called the 50 for the 50 years oh my god that is stunning in Black. I just hope it's going to be another one could you imagine what they would do with the latest technology👍
Great review as usual. GT-R not for me, if I won one, it would be up for sale within the month. Don't like the looks, size or the auto transmission. I'd have an EVO 8 or 9 any day for a drivers car.
The R35 holds my record for highest speed at which I've lost the back end in any car- around 120mph (checked corner exit speed the next lap...obviously wasn't looking at the speedo!). It definitely doesn't drive for you! Did have TC off since that was on a track. Having said that, it still was more impressive than fun. Definitely still a lot of car for the money, but I wouldn't say a lot of fun for the money- especially accounting for running costs. If they were cheaper to run I'd be very tempted though.
The original R35 Was originally created by the original team I think that made they are 34. But to basically shape it as a 350 Z including power plant. Because there is a hot version stating as such look it up
Always loved the GTR. Driving it on a track its amazing but the next one needs to be much smaller. It's clearly designed for the American market and is way too big for UK roads.
I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 210,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Nissan is capable to be reliable as Toyota and Honda. You haters should learn how to read a manual and drive a car properly and you won’t have any problems long term.
It’s funny when they first came out they Bore the skyline moniker I’ve been when everyone found out that it literally had nothing to do with the skyline lineage they dropped it and made it GTR. Can I makes you think doesn’t it
Great roads, just ip the road from me. Best road I ever found was the A835, north west Scotland, Ullapoo/ Lochinver way. Its fantastic and I know sunny days are few and far between up there, but when you get one it's a treat! Bit of a commute though....lol
Based on your extensive experience with Mclaren, would you absolutely advise against buying a 2019 Mclaren 600LT at around the £130k price point. It seems like such good value, but not if the aftersales service, build quality and depreciation are going to be really poor then I guess it is a no go?
The best thing they could do for now, is to make it slimmer and lighter And please without making any alien futuristic looks to it I'd really consider buying one

@@KeenanStyles Yeah people who think of GT-R only think of R32-34. And a thinking of Skyline they think of GT-R. 😁 And no GT-R sounds as good as the Hakosuka.

R35 is a great value car and reliable compared to the more exotic cars and it’s always ready to drive unlike a number of temperamental cars. Drive a standard one or a tuned example check Litchfield Motors for options, size wise not really larger than an Bmw M3 f80

The BNR34 didn't get as much hate as the BCNR33 simply because it improved on the areas of concern however the story in motorsports and with the production cars remained the same.
time is a cruel mistress--indeed. words of wisdom, lloyd, words of wisdom
Always enjoying the videos :)
Btw, where is that road?
That exhaust FUCKING SINGS!
Definitely approve of the modification :)
I feel all GTR's should get a modified exhaust. It really opens her up and sounds AMAZING
came from modified evos into R35 I felt mine only really came alive after Litchfield had got it near 800bhp. Little bit tame feeling stock but an absolute animal on road modified (at what they call ‘LM750’ )
Gorgeous car
Really liked the noise that thing made!! Its pretty much the perfect sound I'd want from my car
I loved the R35 GTR until I read about the possible servicing charges on them generally and maintenance, plus gear box reliability of older ones especially. Would still love to own one but not sure if a 2009-2016 worth the risk.
I saw this in an Aldi car park yesterday. Surely not filmed and uploaded so quickly, J?
Haha certainly not!
@@JayEmmOnCars You filmed around my childhood home. The Aldi was maybe 25 miles away. Owner must be the wider Stirling area, I'm guessing.
Best car I’ve ever owned had a Litchfeild tuned one it was amazing. On the road and track.
Fucking phone road sorry jay. Have a word with the guys down there if you haven’t experience one of there build before they are a little mad.
Imagine that todays 2024 BMW M2 weighs more than once called overweight GT-R 😮
My 11 year old son likes them as well!
“They haven’t built a new car here. They built a new yardstick.”
- Jeremy Clarkson, Original R35 Top Gear review
Love these cars, but I'd want one of these AND the 370z Nismo. Just for the more usable fun of the NA V6 manual experience.
Now, all we need is to see what you think of the 2020 Nismo edition... 🤔
A truly ace car
I have been driven in an Alpha 12 GT-R and all I can say... WOW 😀
Good lord
Alpha 9 was a nearly out of body experience I can only imagine a 12
Gtr is my choice over any super car simply for the price to performance you can get an early one quite cheap for what it is and they are really tuneable
Yay! And hear it is 😁👌🔥
Thats a good top lad!!
Great review as usual. GT-R not for me, if I won one, it would be up for sale within the month. Don't like the looks, size or the auto transmission. I'd have an EVO 8 or 9 any day for a drivers car.
didn't think he was that keen on the 34. From his recent videos I thought he was kind of dissappointred by it.
They are cheap to run dude checkout bros for speed
Will it become a classic like it’s older versions?
New exhaust was a waste of money - it sounds horrible. Car looks fantastic and performance is a given. Great review.
Which road is that James?
Childhood fantasies & nostalgia aside how does it compare back to back with the R34?
The original R35 Was originally created by the original team I think that made they are 34. But to basically shape it as a 350 Z including power plant. Because there is a hot version stating as such look it up
Cool car; cool shirt.
Sounds epic...
Always loved the GTR. Driving it on a track its amazing but the next one needs to be much smaller. It's clearly designed for the American market and is way too big for UK roads.
Im not sure they will build a r36 sadly. Nissan has too much problems atm
GTR's are timeless in my opinion. Truly amazing. I may be biased though haha
Can I makes you think doesn’t it
Jesus, where did you find that shirt!???
I never could get over how heavy such a little car was. These things weigh as much as a Sherman Tank.
They're not really that little though
Fredrick Rourk road hugging weight!😂
@@andysp8845 4669lbs according to google
R32 3150lbs
@@andysp8845 road hugging weight like these cars? ua-cam.com/video/VO07o9VHX-w/v-deo.html
Can you tell us where this awesome road is? Love the GT-R!
Campsie hills in Scotland
@@improvise7180 thank you. Hopefully can visit one day.
Great roads, just ip the road from me. Best road I ever found was the A835, north west Scotland, Ullapoo/ Lochinver way. Its fantastic and I know sunny days are few and far between up there, but when you get one it's a treat! Bit of a commute though....lol
I like that cow. 10/10.
Where abouts is this road, looks amazing
I do wish James would tell us which roads he drives on when he does his videos
There is a reason that I don't reveal the road but if you look in comments on some of my other reviews you will see people mention it
JayEmm on Cars speed limits?!
R32 - semi
R33 - left me cold
R34 - loved it, would have one in a heart beat
R35 - marry it and have children
So you don't think either? Just regurgitate?
@@1968leg isn‘t someone allowed to share a common opinion? Not everyone wants to be an annoying contrarian all the time.
@@johnjuiceshipper4963 just predictable pap, thats all.
Clarkson says so. So I must agree.
@@1968leg I have no idea what you're on about. But you seem to be having a nice conversation with yourself.... Have a great Sunday dude 👍
Based on your extensive experience with Mclaren, would you absolutely advise against buying a 2019 Mclaren 600LT at around the £130k price point. It seems like such good value, but not if the aftersales service, build quality and depreciation are going to be really poor then I guess it is a no go?
It's a great car, get it inspected and with a good warranty and it should be mostly fine
The best thing they could do for now, is to make it slimmer and lighter
And please without making any alien futuristic looks to it
I'd really consider buying one
Does anyone know where these roads are?
Lennoxtown area just outside Glasgow heading towards Loch Lomond.
I'm an old school guy, so the C110 Kenmeri is the one for me. Too much electronics in these tbh.
Your comment is the only one I've seen that even mentions the predecessors. Everyone keeps saying he's driven all of the GT-Rs not knowing there are 6 and not 4 🤣 these people need a history lesson.
To much electronics that's why Silvia exists.
There is a multi valve version of the R31. I have seen them but never driven.
@@KeenanStyles Yeah people who think of GT-R only think of R32-34. And a thinking of Skyline they think of GT-R. 😁
And no GT-R sounds as good as the Hakosuka.
@@MrRourk Yes the RB20DE and DET have 4 valves. I love the R31. Most enthusiasts don´t. I do.
Yes the GTS(-R) is also nice.
This is not a skyline it's a GTR
R35 Nissan don't call this skyline
But it's a nice video many attack
I'd suck anything to own one of these...
I'm excited for the day in the future where I will be able to afford a "dream" car, when I've done well enough that I can have £30k to spend on a weekend car. And I will buy one of these. Love love love this car so much, can't even explain it. And you don't have to be a billionaire to afford it.
R35 is a great value car and reliable compared to the more exotic cars and it’s always ready to drive unlike a number of temperamental cars. Drive a standard one or a tuned example check Litchfield Motors for options, size wise not really larger than an Bmw M3 f80
Great car, always wanted one. But I think unless money was no object, I’d have a new V8 mustang for half the price.
Still a bargain deal but used 911 turbos aren't that far off. In my opinion the second best GTR behind the r32
On the running costs, you need to compare with similar performance cars 911 Turbo, Ferrari F8, Lamborghini Huracan etc..In that regards it's wayyy cheaper
7:35 why is Ricky from trailer park boys driving a GTR
This is the same price as an Evora. I know where my lottery win would go!
