  • Originally aired on June 28, 1971, Vida Blue of the Oakland A’s was in the midst of setting the baseball world on its ear when this story aired. Interviews with Blue’s mother is included as are clips of him pitching against the Kansas City Royals. Royal manager Bob Lemon and first baseman and Chuck Harrison are also included.

    Wow...just two months after this broadcast, my dad took my brothers and I to the old Yankee Stadium to watch Vida pitch...at the time he was 21-4...looked like a 30 game winner for sure...but my Yankees nearly knocked him out of the game with 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th and took a 4-2 lead...but wouldn’t you know it..the A’s came back with 4 in the top of the 8th and Vida got win number 22...sadly, he would win only 2 more games the rest of the season...
