I’m so glad I got to see him at the top of his game. Winning the CYA and MVP in ‘71 was incredible. I even named my youngest son after him! (Vida means life in Spanish.)
I was 10 years old and started following the A's in 1970. What a ride it was. Baseball was fun back then and I couldnt wait to get the evening newpaper to see the west coast score and Sporting News each week to review the box scores. Greatest time of my childhood. Met Vida a couple times and he was Mr Cool.
As a baseball fan the Oakland A's took baseball by storm for the 1st half of the 1970s and Vida Blue was the Superstar pitcher who burst onto the scene and was dominant with an overpowering rising fastball. He took the baseball world by storm. RIP Vida Blue 🙏
Those A's teams of the seventies have yet to get the recognition they deserve as on of the greatest teams of all time. They could pitch, play D, Hit with enough power, Play small ball. Fundamentally sound club. They may not have hit for average but they hit enough.
I was a kid in 1971 & just started to follow Baseball & fell in love with the game to the point where I worked Baseball into everything I did. It was in '71 that Vida Blue was dominant & I can tell you this guy was the biggest name in the game that year. He was as dominate player as there was at that time & naturally made quite an impression to young kid that was falling in love with the game.
Unless you were alive at the time, you can't imagine how Vida took the sports world by storm in 1971. In August of that year, he made the cover of Time Magazine and was Pres. Nixon's guest at the White House.** At that point in the 1971 season, Vida was 22-4! If not for the loss of Catfish Hunter to free agency in 1975, the A's could have extended their World Series streak. **"On August 17, 1971 - During a visit to the White House, 21 year-old Vida Blue, who is presently 22-4, is told by President Nixon that he is the most underpaid player in the game."
Rest In Power to this Legend!
Is he dead? 😳 I didn’t know that! Wow 😢
RIP in the Heavenly Hall of Fame . Thanks, Champ.
I was at Stockton Ports Sunday, and they had a moment of silence.
There's a tear in my beer 🍺 😢
What a nice interview. The A's were a great team in his era. Mr Blue was a class act.

Love ya Vida! These guys were great ballplayers, and friggin' interesting too! They played with style!
True...they didn't have to try to get attention, they had charisma.
RIP Vida! Beautiful A's uniform
Vida Blue-Gone but not forgotten-He was the best pitcher on the A’s

Rip 🙏
5 Division titles in a row.
Vida may have been referring to Jon Matlack since Craig Swan wasn't on the Mets '73 team. Vida gets a pass though. RIP, my friend.
Nhr even had "Vida" on his jersey. LOL
