    2003 Marlins had one of the most underrated lineups ever. 2 speedsters in Pierre and Castillo who always got on base, then 4 HR threats in a row. Plus Beckett, Penny, Pavano and Willis in the starting rotation. WOW.

      toptenguy1 And we sports fans wonder why the Marlins aren't the Yankees of the National League. They had the talent and the will to do so but also didn't have a decent fan base and a lousy stadium to boot. Now that the Marlins have a decent stadium, can this be the start of something good for Miami?

    The 2003 Marlins were LOADED! A young Juan Pierre, rookie sensation Miguel Cabrera, Pudge Rodriguez in his prime, veteran Jeff Conine, a young Josh Beckett, dominant Dontrelle Willis, Ugeath Urbina to close games and 72 year old manager Jack McKeon. These guys were special and no matter how many runs behind, this team never gave up. To top it off, this team beat the two most storied franchises in back to back series. They came back 3 games to 1 vs the Cubs (which most remember for the "Bartman" game 6 8th inning the Marlins scored 8 runs in) and dominated the Yankees in 6 games to win the whole thing.

    In the 5th inning, Kerry Wood obviously lost his control and what did the cameras show Dusty Baker doing?? Just sitting on the bench, toothpick in mouth, chilling and watching the game! Kerry was one of his best pitchers so why worry, right?
    He was so nonchalant during a crucial game AND he didnt have anyone warming up!, the Marlins on the other hand had already goone through 2 pitchers and had Josh Beckett warming in the bullpen just in case. That's why the Cubs lost, horrible managing

      Yes, Dusty Baker is a Good/horrible manager, he took the Giants to the WS in 2002, Cubs to the NLCS, and cincinnati to multiple division contending series, his one problem is that he's too much of an old school manager and doesnt play stats and ignores details
      He thinks, "if my pitcher is doing well, he'll just stay in and finish the game" or "if he gets into trouble, he'll shake it off cause hes a veteran and i dont trust anybody else"

    Bartman should not be balmed for the Cubs losing the game It is not his fault in any way at all. It is simply the teams fault. Gonzalez shouldnt have dropped the double play ball and Prior should not have been in the game for that long. Even so, there was still a Game 7 where the cubs could have won. The Marlins having the momentum thing is a joke and isnt an excuse for the Cubs to not win the game .

    • @scoobycarr5558
      @scoobycarr5558 7 років тому

      Andrew Lindquist Back when the Cubs were Lovable Losers, there was always someone on the team being blamed for the team's troubles or someone in the stands. It was the MANAGEMENT STUPID - no its ands or buts. If you want someone to blame, blame the no-good Wrigley family especially P.K. who guided the Cubs to the worst stretch of baseball ever. I'd refer to him as baseball's version of Bill Wirtz when he guided the Blackhawks to possibly the worst hockey in the NHL. Both these guys are the worst kind of people ever to lead sports franchises.

      Baker should have took Mark Prior out of the game with 1 out in the 8th inning of Game 6 with 3-0 lead after he gave up a double and had Baker had did that Steve Bartman wouldn't be in the conversation and never exist and Dusty Baker should make the right move in the 8th inning and Alex Gonzalez would make that double play to end the 8th.

    It'll be a footnote now that the Cubs have finally won it all. But I have NEVER heard a stadium so quiet as that third out. It might as well have been a rec league game. And then they showed that elderly couple, both of them likely in their 80's, in Cubs gear...neither of them having been old enough to see the then last World Series title for the Cubs in 1908. They almost certainly died before last November's Game 7 to end all Game 7's and it still kinda makes me sad. Bart Giamatti said baseball is a game designed to break your heart. Even as a guy with no dog in the fight, I never felt any more strongly about that then after this game.

They had a 3-0 lead in the eighth inning in game six and a 5-3 lead in game seven. They also had a 4-0 lead in game one and lost that one. So it wasn't just one game and it wasn't just game five.

    Not for nothing but what Josh Beckett did in this series was very similar to MadBum's 2014 World Series - a shutout in Game Five, four innings of relief two days later in Game 7. Not quite as legendary an effort but one that probably merits more respect than it's received.
    This Cubs team was not ready for prime time. Only 88 regular season wins, not an overwhelmingly talented roster. This wasn't going to be the team to end the drought.

    In a way you're right, but the game of baseball has changed a lot, some analysts have stated that we are entering a "pitching revolution". Many young pitchers are throwing better stuff these days, (notice the # of perfect games & no hitters in recent years) But better stuff means less pitches to maintain that stuff
    Prior stated in SI magazine that at 90 pitches, he felt he had to work harder to get his location and movement to work. Speed was the same, but its the location that suffers

    That was tough, i have game 6 on my computer and they replayed the damn play so many times, its still hard too tell if the ball was in play or in the stands, it looked like it literally would've hit the railing....which by the rule book means out of play and NO interference.

    The way I followed this team changed and it's been for the worst. I've been a fan since 1996 and before 2003 I was the guy who was used to only having about 2-3 months of meaningful baseball before they fell out. Like Wayne Drehs said in Catching Hell "2003 was a lesson" Now I long for us to get back SO much that I am pissed at what the new front office is doing today. Am consideing leaving this team in a year or so if things don't get better

      A lot of people seem to forget the cubs lost game 5 as well 4 - 0 on a beautiful 2 hit shutout by Josh Beckett, The Marlins were in control from game 5 and on. In fact they were the better the team, the cubs couldve won game 6, but the cubs would have gotten lucky, cause the stats supported the marlins as the better club

    your comment was solid and respectable up until the last sentence. it contradicted everything you said first. He ran out of stamina, he was also a rookie throwing over 137 pitches per game AND its not like he could have taken himself out. how did he choke if his back was against the wall?

    Funny, as I read this I think about this one dream I had. It's 2020 and the Cubs finally win the World Series. They invite him back to Wrigley Field and he walks out with a T-shirt that reads "F*** the Cubs" and he middle fingers the entire crowd. Then after a few seconds, the scene blows up.
    Swear to God I've had this dream before.

    2003 was heartbreaking for both the Cubbies and the Red Sox, both being 5 outs from the World Series and then choking it. Fortunately, however, the Sox recovered in '04 by coming back from being down 0-3 against the Yankees and sweeping the Cardinals to lift the Curse of the Bambino, and then going on to win two more World Series titles in 2007 and again this year. I hope the Cubs will win it all in 2014.

      Isnt it funny how the Cubs, Red Sox, and White Sox all had the three longest droughts.....and the Red and White Sox both won in back to back years? If the Cubs had won in 2003, it wouldve been an amazing coincidence that they all Broke their droughts in consecutive years!
      (and i dont think the cubs will be contenders until 2015 MAYBE even 2016 with the way their rebuild is going)

      I'm a die-hard Cubs fan, even more than the Blackhawks (who just beat the Kings in OT!!!), but we'll only become competitive around 2016. 2015 will be the year that some of our prospects will come up and it will take time to develop and adjust but I'm confident in Theo and we will definitely have a championship thanks to him.

    • @fallen4life080
      @fallen4life080 10 років тому

      famguy218 honestly I actually wonder if rebuilding will actually do anything. And I actually kind of think the cubs are a lil "cursed". Will not cursed per se, I think it's their reputation that they are expected to lose kind of sub consciously affects them.
      For example do you remember 2008? The Cubs had one of the best Clubs they have ever had in their franchise history they had everything they needed to win the World Series. However they played horribly in the division series, almost as if they forgot how to play the game! And they were playing a dodgers team with only 84 wins! Anybody could have beat the dodgers. this leads me to believe that it doesn't matter what kind of team the Cubs put together they can go 160-0 in the season, and then lose three straight in the division series.
      Personally what I think will happen when the Cubs are playoff ready, is that their young prospects won't be ready for the playoff atmosphere much like Texas in 2010 when they lost the World Series to a weaker Giants team.

      Shouldn’t have blamed him for any of it! Those psychos ruined that man’s life! I mean I was a lifelong DIEHARD Red Sox fan, having grown up 6 miles from Fenway park and even though I don’t condone what Sox fans did to Bill Buckner, at least HE ACTUALLY DID COST THEM THE GAME!! Unlike poor Mr. Bartman who simply wanted to catch a foul ball. I’ll guarantee he NEVER thought his love of the Cubs would end up ruining his life!! Not because of the organization but because of some IDIOTS who took things WAY TOO FAR, because apparently they forgot that ultimately whether we want to admit it or not at the end of the day IT’S A GAME!!!

      @TommyCage0736 9 років тому

      hushg2000 Thats cause the cubs haven't won in 107 years. For a team with that much money and located in one of the nicer chicago neighborhoods to have a century long drought is pathetic. The Cubs front office treated the fans like complete garbage

    • @hushg2000
      @hushg2000 9 років тому +2

      For those of you that don't understand what I meant by comment, listen carefully. Sure, some people watch baseball, and a few cities across the country follow their home teams to the extreme. But the 2003 TV ratings, like the 84 & 89 season, were at a all time high. 2003 broke ratings all across the board for pee wee sake. Your typical American in 2015 doesn't really follow baseball or care to watch the W.S,.. the ratings are there to prove my point. Shit, look them up, they suck!
      So what I am saying is that if my Cubs get back to the NLCS, any sport fan will tune in at home or at a bar to witness the Chicago Cubs win a World Series. How difficult is that to understand? I'm not sure how you guys are getting all ass hurt about it... It is what it is.

      Patrick Lee, yes, it hurts less now than it did before glorious 2016, but it's still a memory that conjures up a feelings of heartbreak for Cubs fans (like me) who watched it live. When we were up 3-1, I was feeling so great. We were on a 3-game winning streak. I was like, "Yes, we're finally going to win the pennant!" Made Games 6 and 7 devastating and, therefore, difficult to talk about. Thom Brennaman sums it up very well here: 2:14:18
