  • This is typically an easy job, unless the upper bolt won't come out. Rust can built up on the end of the bolt, then when you go to remove the bolt, the rust will get jammed up in the square nut, and the pressure can cause the nut to start spinning in its sheet metal casing. This video will show you how to access the nut and remove that upper bolt.
The best thing you can do for yourself to is examine the bolt end before you remove it, and if it looks rusty or dirty, soak it in penetrating oil and scrub it with a wire brush. We did that when changing the second shock and had no issues removing the bolt, as you'll see in this video.
The steps in this video will be the same or similar for the following vehicles:
    2011-2017 Hyundai Elantra
    2012-2015 Hyundai Veloster
    2014-2018 Kia Forte
    2012-2017 Kia Rio

Just want to chime in to say you’re a life saver. I, just like others in here, was almost going to tow this to a body shop and you came through
    Thank you.

After doing the first side, I was hoping the second side was going to be stuck as well so I could record actually doing it, but of course, it came with no problem at all. Anyhow, glad it helped.

That has to be the weirdest way to mount a rear shock that I’ve ever seen. I wanted to quit too. The thought of having to give up and do the drive of shame to a "real mechanic" made me keep going.

@@416diy This has to be the cheapest way of mounting something. I cannot wait to finish this job in the morning and throw this thing on marketplace

I tried removing mine with an impact wrench and it came out a lil bit but now it just spins in place. It rotated so much in place I started having smoke from the bolt turning. How can I get it out?

I’m looking for info on a 2008 Elantra!! It has 2 bolts that go up into the rear seat area and are in stationary nuts and I want to lube the threads! How do I get that piece off the rear seat panel to access those threads??

2008 is definitely different than the 2010 and up models!!

Doing this as we speak. Why and how during the car build did they "encase" that square bolt into the sheet metal? Thanks!

Why - because it's a cheap way to manufacture, and it saves space by eliminating the need for an upper shock mount. How - it looks like the square but was probably pressed into the sheet metal square prior to being welded to the body. The critical flaw was the sheet metal being too weak.

Do you know if it’s safe to reuse that bolt?

Should be fine to reuse. I never saw anything about those bolts being torque to yield, but do let me know if you saw something I missed.
