Zombies Ate My Neighbors in the top 3 makes sense. Here's my take on why it's so difficult. 1.) Having 10 neighbors to save at the start. But as you progress, if one dies, then on the next level, you'll only have 9 neighbors to save. Depending on how many neighbors perish, the game will subtract the same amount of neighbors for the next level. If that makes sense. If you get in the situation where you only have one neighbor to save, and if you're in the later levels where you have all kinds of monsters roaming everywhere, and if a monster kills that last neighbor, it's curtains(game over). 2.) On the original SNES, there's no save system; there's a password system, which will allow you to start on the level you last left off or near the level you left off on. However, you won't have all the weapons you collected. You'll start with the squirt gun and health pack(s), but It's becomes really hard just having the base weapon and not having the right weapon on hand when you're in the later levels and having tougher monsters chasing you around. 3.) The cycle system with your weapons; some weapons are one-hit kills on certain monsters (EX. silverware on werewolf or Popsicles/fire extinguisher on blobs), so you're cycling through your arsenal for a specific weapon to deal with that monster chasing you while at the same time you're dodging other monsters(zombies, evil dolls, mummies, chainsaw maniacs, ETC...) an additional challenge, but I think it is a minor flaw in the game. 4.) Collecting Weapons/Health; if you don't take the time to collect weapons and health items, then when it comes to fighting bosses, it will be difficult. I remember co-op with my brother. We got to the level where you fight the Giagantic Spider boss for the first time. We ended having low ammunition or not the right weapon to beat the Gigantic Spider. So, my brother and I had the idea to backtrack the level to see if we can scrounge out any more weapons laying around. But in doing so, we had to deal with the monsters coming at us. Making us waste more ammunition. We weren't able to beat the boss spider, unfortunately. I just remember having little hope of beating the boss spider, finding more weapons, and expecting a game over and not moving on to the next level was a bummer. But the memory of the experience at that moment with my brother is precious to me. But that's my take on my Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a challenging but fun game. Also, the music is catchy as hell. I tip my hat off to Joe McDermott(music composer), such as a genius musician.
Excellent take! It's a favourite of mine as well, although I don't think of myself as a very avid gamer. I beat the spider once. I played the game straight through, hoarding monster potions and treasure chests the entire time. The monster being impervious is a big component. And those treasure chests are great against really powerful opponents. I used a bunch of them in a castle level and I ended up getting a, "Vampire killed" bonus at the end. Biggest bonus I've ever seen in that game!
Hardest part about Donkey Kong country 2 was finding all The DK coins on the level to get The Higher than Mario rank at the end...& don't get me started on The Lost Levels.
@@adomomcjinkies4787that's definitely the one from my childhood 😂 the last castle level with the rising acid, gave me some good trouble back in the day too!
DKC3 was more difficult than DKC2 in my opinion. There were even more collectables, you had to complete puzzling quests with the bears to collect the banana birds, and that rocket level. One wrong move in that level or not moving fast enough will defeat you in 1 hit.
And Whiny Bitch Gamer (Mega Man 7 is on the list and he hates the SNES, or in this case, the “NES Super Game System”) played by ExoParadigmGamer, just you wait until he reviews An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (the game and maybe even the movie which SNESDrunk reviewed, I like the game better than the already fun movie for not making it look like a bad think if Tanya chooses to wear lipstick or not as she was getting older like in my future An American Tail sequel series where the kids grow up with families of their own and excluding the racist stereotypes of indigenous mice that thankfully The Treasure of Manhattan Island is now prominent for addressing) alongside AVGN and the Super Mario World custom hacks (I’m known as the type of guy to request myself alongside ExoParadigmGamer to make “Why TheSecond Reality Project Reloaded is the WURST GAME IN THE WURLD!!! (A WBG Rant-view)” via Frigid Fire/SteveGreeneComedy & James Maslow Productions’ “The KGHS Show”. Then again, this is coming from a fan of the SNES who thinks that while these games are definitely hard, they’re still more fair than games from its predecessor console (which some of them like, of course, Super Mario Bros. 3, would have a much better balance of difficulty as it’s a surrealistic masterpiece even after 36 years) and of course, I can see why the epic Super Mario World duology isn’t on the list (the original is easier than they say and the sequel/prequel, while definitely challenging, the sequel is even harder).
I remember watching my mother play Contra to the very end. It was to the point where she had to call the hotline to get out on certain levels. Memories😊
Ah yes. I remember going to a campground with my Dad when I was a kid. There was a small building with a couple of arcade games in it. One of them was Contra. I made friends with another kid, so we played co-op. We both agreed that we sucked at it. Then, we did a slow motion high-five and walked away into the sunset.
Everyone always talks about lv 2 on Lion King. I may have to play it again, but i never thought it was that bad. I struggled at lv 8 (or 9, been too many year since i played it)
You putting "The 7th Saga" on this list made my day. This is my favorite RPG of ALL TIME!!!! The music was brilliant and the story was great. Few individuals know or speak about this game, and I'm so glad to have played this masterpiece.
My brother rented it when I was younger! I believe I tried the demon as well. I didn’t get far due to the difficulty and being a rental, but I thought it was neat!
Took a while to beat Zombies ate my Neighbors . Used to play on emulators and using save states . Years later started grinding every day on SNES. Getting farther each time . Finally was able to but would pause and turn off the TV after an hour and pick up later. The code system kinda sucks , you don’t have items that can be necessary to get in earlier levels, to be used later. Except for the BCDA code that starts you on the 1st special level , then you can play the first level and get an opportunity to go into that special level again . All the extra items help. Still a great game . Still would like to see a proper sequel or reboot . Ghoul Patrol doesn’t count , it wasn’t intended and was shoehorned in.
I'm no virtuoso gamer but i have completed several entries on this list. Back then, we didn't know they were hard. They were just what we had. (Actraiser was especially brilliant!)
Mega Man 7 to me wasn't that bad. Though the final boss is one of the hardest final bosses in all Mega Man games. Mega Man & Bass is a much harder game and arguably the hardest classic Mega Man game. The footage of Earthworm Jim 2 is from the Genesis version for some reason? Battletoads In Battlemanics to me was much harder than NES Battletoads. In fact, most of the levels are just harder versions of certain Battletoads levels.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors is hands-down my favorite game that I was never able to finish. (I think I may have gotten up to about Level 30...MAYBE), and then I just sadly hit a wall. But I still LOVE the tone and presentation, and I've been praying for 4-player modern revival for years. (Couch co-op is the BEST!) Super Ghouls and Ghosts is #2. It looked and sounded SOOO cool and creepy, but after being stuck on Level 4 or 5 for days, I was ultimately defeated. Im a lifelong horror junkie first and foremost, so these two games (plus Splatterhouse) were some of my most beloved experiences of th 16-bit era.
Ghoul Patrol is such a serious downgrade in terms of gameplay and mechanics… I can’t believe it’s allowed to be called the sequel to Zombies Ate My Neighbors, tbh lol!
I beat The Lion King last night for the first time in 33 years and it was one of the most frustrating things ever…. I needed invincibility on for the last two levels and still died A LOT
As a kid I finished Actraiser, RType, Eartworm Jim 1&2, Star Wars Trilogy, Super Ghouls n Ghosts... tried the last one again some days ago: no chance. Those were different times....
If they do a list like this for Sega Genesis, High Seas Havoc better be on that list. That game was crazy! Never did beat it as a kid. I need to go back to it now and defeat it for good!
I own F-Zero, Super Empire Strikes Back, and Jurassic Park. I also rented Mario Kart, Prince of Persia, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors often when video rental places were a thing.
Castlevania Dracula X on first place?! Are you kidding me?! This game was easy. So was Zombies and Contra 3. But i give you Hagane and Barts Nightmare. I couldnt finish one level of Barts Nightmare and on Hagane i only got to level 2 and thats it. Those games destroyed me.
Am I the only one here who actually beat “Disney’s The Lion King”? As somebody who got “Super R Type” as one of my first Super NES games, I can testify to the difficulty being brutal.
No, I beat it, but not the way you would think. I beat most of the levels except one or two and then went back and beat those other ones, all with the power of the level select secret in the “Options” screen. So, I guess, technically, I didn’t beat the game, but I’ve beat every single level. I’ve went straight to Pride Rock for the fight with Scar countless times.😎
ok lion king was along with alladin made extra hard by disney...blockbuster video and hollywood video with slew of others used to rent the games and disney wanted sales...so if you could not finish the game when you rent it you bought it to finish it was the logic behind it
"Haygan"....its pronounced Ha-ga-nay. But im SHOCKED you guys didnt list this one in the top 3...top 5 the VERY lowest. Hagane is MEGA hard. Yeah, if you master this guy's entire moveset, it admittedly gets moderately easier. But this game is frustrating at times, but damn, do i love 5hud game 🤩
Challenge accepted!! I feel like I played and beat at least half of what was on this list but i would be happy to do it all again for nostalgia purposes :)
I honestly think DKC3 is harder than DKC2. That rocket level gave me more issues than animal antics in DKC2 Be prepared was way more difficult than can’t wait to be king was. There were more 1 hit unalivings in that level and should you lose all your lives and continues, you’d have to start over from the beginning. I still really dislike those bats that knocked you in the lava. Getting to world 9 in Lost Levels was really hard too (no warping). If you went down a wrong path to a warp zone, the only solution was to lose a life so you didn’t warp. I am willing to bet that one of the hardest games on the N64 is going to end up being Diddy Kong Racing. Unless you hit every zipper lifting the A button when doing so, Wizpig was tough, but unlocking TT was even more difficult.
The Lion King is legit the only tough game in the bunch and even then it's mainly getting used to a weirdly placed hit box when you grab ledges. I've beaten all those games several times even when I was a kid.
"You'll rarely hear: I love that game and/or movie, but they really hit their stride with the 7th entry." Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda and The Fast and the Furious enter the chat
Everything the NES was and much more, including the difficulty. I submit the following in addition: Maximum Carnage, Bubsy, Breath of Fire 2, Metal Warriors, The Lost Vikings
I was surprised to find out that there was a whole of game after the speed bike level in both battletoads games since i was never able to beat either one
I heard it was so it could be finished in a weekend rental. Rentals were huge at that time, and the devs saw no comp, so those games were made intentionally difficult.
Lol! Now I don't feel so bad about never finishing Zombies ate my Neighbors! I never made it past the level with the giant worms. I did finish Actraiser though 👍🏿
Since this is including Japanese games I gotta say Mega Man & Bass is exponentially harder than Mega Man 7-which aside from the final boss is probably the easiest Mega Man game overall.
Man, the soundtrack for that game is freaking amazing!! Yes, I got to the third level and couldn’t beat it. The second level really felt like a chore, but it was manageable as long as you looked at the overhead map from time to time by pressing Select. But it went on for sooooo lonnnngggg.😝
@@newgameaaaa It’s got so many flaws, and yes, even the first level is tough, but I hope you get the chance to play it again. The visuals are amazing, but I think the soundtrack is the best part. Just listen to the title screen music for a while, or the Continue/Game Over Screen. They put so much passion, depth, and dedication into the music!
#4 As long as you keep the Spread gunfire w/rapid you were good to go. If you got the Flamethrower. You were SCREWED. #3 That was our version of DARK SOULS
Honorable Mention: Another World. MAN, that game was hard! I never could finish it!! You have a ONE POINT HP and everything is trying to kill you. You also have no way to save the game, so if you get shot/killed it's back to the very beginning! You do find a gun to shoot at your enemies and create a force field, but it runs out of energy easily before you can charge it, plus, you do meet a friend that helps you, but he also has a one point HP and can just as easily get turned into ashes if he gets hit. I have no idea what happens after you get the gun. I ran out of energy for it before I could charge it...😓
The difficulty on some of these is region dependent. ActRaiser in the West is a breeze compared to the Japanese original. Contra III's Japanese version is a lot easier because it has infinite continues and cheat codes that were removed in the Western release.
Out of these games listed I have beaten: Super Mario Kart, 7th Saga, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Zombies Ate My neighbors. I don't think Zombies ate my neighbors, Super Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Country are the hardest games. I would guess that Super Ghouls and Ghosts is by far the hardest. I don't even want to play it with save states.
And to make Contra 3 even harder in order to get the game's true ending which leads into the storyline of the PS2 chronological sequel in the lore Contra Shattered Soldier you have to beat Contra 3 on the hardest difficulty which I managed to do after 50+tries which including me saying words I wasn't allowed to say at that young of a age. Keeping on the topic of getting a SNES game's true ending in Super Ghost and Goblins in order to access the true final level, fight the true final boss and the get the true ending you have to get the Psycho Cannon a ultra powerful magical weapon which is only usable in the true final level, now while this doesn't seem like a issue here's what makes it a issue the Psycho Cannon is found in the first stage but it's located in a portion of the first stage that is easily missable if you're not actively looking for and due to the fact you're not made aware of this fact until you complete what you thought was the game's final level means there's a high chance you're going to miss getting the Psycho Cannon on the first go around which means you have to play through the game again just to get another shot at finding the Psycho Cannon
Of all those games I has played here, The 7th Saga is the most difficult... It's almost impossible since the encounter rate is unreal and enemies often comes in packs, and you're alone in the beginning... Plus it's not easy to heal in that game, since the potions are rare. You gets 2 or 3 shooted constantly. It's a pure RNG game.
It is difficult. I tried it the first time and used Lux, but I kept dying and gave up. I tried it again with Kamil and Esuna and that time I beat it. I watched a lets play of it and didn't know you could change characters. When I was playing I had to level up so much that I was doing 1000 chrunches while playing.
Ha! I remember trying 150cc on SMK and that was no fun at all. I had to use Game Genie to try and beat Bart's Nightmare, but I could never figure out the 2nd Bartzilla level where he was climbing the building. Tried Super R-Type on NSO and I got bored of it. Don't even get me started on Lion King. Could never get past the ostrich obstacle. I hope Nintendo releases a remake of 776/Genealogy in the future. I wanna play that so bad.
We’ve already covered NES; now let’s see if Nintendo took it easier on us with its next console generation. Spoiler alert... They didn’t.

The first Actraiser is pretty easy, beat it many times. You might be thinking of Actraiser 2, which is really hard and I think I beat maybe one level.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors in the top 3 makes sense. Here's my take on why it's so difficult. 1.) Having 10 neighbors to save at the start. Challenge accepted!! I feel like I played and beat at least half of what was on this list but i would be happy to do it all again for nostalgia purposes :)
I honestly think DKC3 is harder than DKC2. That rocket level gave me more issues than animal antics in DKC2
Be prepared was way more difficult than can’t wait to be king was.
The Lion King, Star Fox, and The Legend Of Zelda.
The Lion King is legit the only tough game in the bunch and even then it's mainly getting used to a weirdly placed hit box when you grab ledges. I've beaten all those games several times even when I was a kid.
@1963vwbeetle why aren't YOU at work or are YOU a kid? 😂😂
@1963vwbeetle yeah, cause you started public school right, gotchu. 😂😂
@1963vwbeetle lmao I don't think you realize I'm mocking you and Candice from a few days ago 😂😂
@@MyMomsAccount13 you need to grow up already. It's sad how childish you are
i remember having trouble with the second lvl of the lion king game and just gave up.
I’m sorry. It got a lot better and had some really cool cut scenes based on the movie
lion king never again back in blockbusters days i spent up 30-40 bucks renting it trying and trying but i only made it to the stampede
"You'll rarely hear: I love that game and/or movie, but they really hit their stride with the 7th entry."
Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda and The Fast and the Furious enter the chat
Great points!! But which one was the 7th Legend of Zelda? Are you counting the Game Boy and GBA ones as well?
@@brianhatcher2799 Thanks! Wind Waker, and yes, counting all the games
@@zacharycollins9485 You’re welcome. Yes, Wind Waker was absolutely incredible. It took me a long time to get through, but it was so worth it!!
Super Ghouls N Ghosts, has the merit of being crowned 👑, the most difficult games of my life
Everything the NES was and much more, including the difficulty. I submit the following in addition:
Maximum Carnage, Bubsy, Breath of Fire 2, Metal Warriors, The Lost Vikings
I’ve seen all from 1980-Now what a life of gaming
I was surprised to find out that there was a whole of game after the speed bike level in both battletoads games since i was never able to beat either one
SNES drunk should totally make a retaliate video.
Maybe a video on shorter retro games worth a modern day playthrough if you missed them originally.
I think I heard somewhere that the reason why the lion king was so difficult was so that the movie's plotline wasn't spoiled!
I heard it was so it could be finished in a weekend rental. Rentals were huge at that time, and the devs saw no comp, so those games were made intentionally difficult.
Probably, but the hardest level in the game (be prepared) wasn’t even in the movie
Contra III: Aliens Wars was easy. I used to beat that game in one hour 😮
So did I! Blindfolded and playing on the moon 27 years ago on a Saturday sitting beside Captain Crunch! Lol
Really hard to get past the Stage 3 mini boss without losing a life.
I think the Konami code is Im the Alien war?
@@mattiasolsson1523 No. In the Japanese version, you had to do the Hadouken command to get 30 lives.
Ugh Megaman and Bass was frustratingly hard at times.
Kinda surprised Super Castlevania IV isn't on here but Dracula X is by far harder so i have to give credit where it's due
Super Castlevania 4 control better which make i easy compare to Dracula X.
@@mattiasolsson1523 hence why I said Dracula X is by far the harder entry
@@sorahearts3317
I agree with you
Super Castlevania IV is one of the easiest games in the entire series.
If you came from the original or Dracula's Curse you would beat it immediately.
@@Ruudos I realize that now. It's by far easier than the original that's for sure.
Yeah, some of those most definitely deserve to be here.
Part of my childhood in one video
I've never even played that lion king game and i still feel a mixture of anger and anxiety anytime i see footage of that monkey level
Battletoads and castlevania ❤️❤️ those Games were sooo damn hard for me and my siblings as a 6 years old 😭❤️
Yeah, earthworm Jim was pretty difficult.
Does anyone remember Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3D ..... that is the hardest game that does get enough attention
Yes. I don't think I got past the first level. I plan on playing it again one day.
Yoshi's Island should have been on the list. Some of tise bonus levels are just maddening.
that looked like the genesis version of Earthworm Jim 2
Zombies ate my neighbors is one of the best couch co-ops of the 90s and I will die on that hill!!!!!!
Oh yeah. I played that with so many of my friends back in the day.
No UN Squadron? Ares 88 was like surviving the Launceston Maul in 1999. IYKYK.
Fucking super Ghouls and Ghosts pissed me off so much as a kid.
#4 As long as you keep the Spread gunfire w/rapid you were good to go. If you got the Flamethrower. You were SCREWED.
#3 That was our version of DARK SOULS
Contra 3 you still only die with 1 hit & the only weapon you could win with was the Spredder. Meaning if you lost it you're screwed.
I ran out of energy for it before I could charge it...😓
I was explaining "rubber-banding" to my Mom, and she said, "Oh, like in Mario Kart when they cheat?" Yeah, that's it lol
This host is unhinged 😂
I love it.
The difficulty on some of these is region dependent. ActRaiser in the West is a breeze compared to the Japanese original. Contra III's Japanese version is a lot easier because it has infinite continues and cheat codes that were removed in the Western release.
Someone has never played Chuck Rock for the SNES and it shows.
Sooooooooo….no Jim Power??
Thank you. That game is good , but the insane difficulty and demands really drag it down for me
@@brianhatcher2799 Gotta love the real difficult games😂🤣😂
Out of these games listed I have beaten: Super Mario Kart, 7th Saga, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Zombies Ate My neighbors. I don't think Zombies ate my neighbors, Super Mario Kart and Donkey Kong Country are the hardest games. I would guess that Super Ghouls and Ghosts is by far the hardest. I don't even want to play it with save states.
Finished Dracula x on Thursday lol ty save states lol
Ys3, Darius Twin, Pilotwings.. I never got through a one as a kid
I have beat it 4 times
Zombies Ate My Neighbors is my god damn jam. I dust that puppy off now and then to this day when I'm in the mood for some good old self flagellation.
ok ghouls and ghosts series regardless if it was arcade or cart was made to be difficult
Earth Defense force. I’ve never seen anyone beat it with a weapon other than homing
Those are some hard games to beat but fun games.
True.
Prince of Persia looked fantastic for its time but was so difficult, I couldn't play it.
Mario kart? I’m amazed anyone finds this game that hard
