Leather Round Tool Bag / Bicycle Bag - Leatherworking

- Опубліковано 25 тра 2018
- May 5th & 6th 2018, I was in Birmingham for Makers Central. The show was great and I met a lot of awesome makers. Few weeks before the show, I was contacted by Jim from @Wavecycles on Instragram. He told me about his idea of gathering a bunch of makers for a collaboration which would be making a bike. Every makers involved would have to make a part of the bike and during the weekend of the show, we would put all the parts together to give birth to the "Spirit of Collaboration". I thought this was a brilliant idea and was immediately on board. As I had never made one before and wanted to give it a try, I decided to make a leather round tool box to hang behind the saddle.
But life happens and some of the makers initially involved couldn't make it to the show. So Jim, Ellen from Craft with Ellen and I brought what we made and we finished building the bike, late on a saturday night, in a parking lot near the hotel. Some other friends came with us to film and take picture and just be there, and it was awesome. Al took had a run with the bike, took it to the hotel lobby and Laura Kampf also had a small run with it inside the hotel.
The bike is 8.5feet long (something like 2.65m) and was for Jim and the makers involved an exercise in building a unique bike using scrapped and recycled parts, easily available materials and little to no specialised tools, in hope to inspire others to give it a try.
FOr the round saddle bag, I used 2.6mm thick vegetable tanned leather, engraved it with a Trotec laser at my local makerspace, dyed it with brown leather dye, and put two coats of leather varnish on it. All the hardware is brass and I really like the contrast of brown leather and brass hardware. I hope you like it as well.
I was really to be part of the build and can't thank Jim enough for asking me to be a part of it. The idea of uniting makers from the world, with different skills and knowledge around a common build was a brilliant idea and I'm ready to do it again anytime.

Thanks a lot guys!! :)
Beautiful work as always Red. It all came together brilliantly, and well done for keeping it all under wraps. 👍
Thank you Phil! Much appreciated :)
So cool to actually get to see how you made it :D Those round end caps are great, love the process you used!
Thank you Ellen. The caps were the tricky part. I guess there is a lot of different way to make them but this method seems to work pretty well ;)
Wow ! Absolutely gorgeous and awesome, Red ! Thank you
Thanks a lot Remy. Much appreciated. Thanks for watching!!
Awesome. Just awesome and an amazing part of an epic collaboration. Thanks G. 🌲🦊🌲🤗
Thank you !! It was a great idea and a lovely project :)
What beautiful sentiment, makers coming together to create. I can't think of another community that I would rather be involved in. No egos just people passionate about sharing their love of creating. Now that's the makers spirit.
That's exactly what this build was about, and you're totally right about our community! And I love it. Thanks for watching :)
What a great job! I bet that was quite a satisfying project! All the best!
Thank you very much Scott!! :)

I have to say, I love how you drew the circle around the circle.... Never saw it done that way before..... Very nice.
Thank you very much! I'm sure there must be a tool for that, but sometimes, you just have to improvise :)
That was amazing to watch, your precision is incredible!
ShireenPlays Thank you very much. I realy appreciate it.

Nice Job! Loved seeing your stuff on the bike in the lobby of the hotel at Makers Central.

Watching you and Ellen putting your parts on Jim’s awesome bike in the car park was fantastic. Cheers Red!👍🏻
Richard Martin Thanks Richard. It was really fun. Good times. 😊
Absolutely, I can only agree! :)
I'm sorry to bother, but could you point me to where I could watch this video? I'd very much like to. =)
Josisbundo Couves I don't think there is one that captures it all... I only have a part of that where the add-ons were not on the bike...
Oh. OK, then. Thanks anyway. =)
Really cool! I love the method for making the round parts. It came out great!
Thanks a lot Bruce. Glad you liked the video :)

Beautiful! And that was a great way to create the end circles!
Thank you!! It's the easiest way to shape leather, wet it, shape it, and let it dry ;)
Fair Dinkum awesome mate, I cannot believe till now I haven’t been subscribed to your channel, love this project & my Grandmother was a leather worker 👍👍👍

Thanks for watching!
So much love for this
Thanks a lot Steve :)
Not sure how I missed this. That’s really cool. Both the pouch and the bike. Nice work.
Thanks a lot Chad. A lot of people did. It was on saturday night. Maybe during dinner... glad you liked it :)
It was awesome, they prepared it all on the parking lot and Al drove it into the lobby :) I tried to convice the manager that we might bring it up to the bar but he wasn't too happy about the lobby part already... :D
Oh you talked to the guy ? I missed that part :D
Yes, right when Al drove it in and I ended the footage I gave you... :D
Kjellski some people are too uptight. It was a private party. He shouldn’t have said a word if I drove a Harley in there on one wheel.
Great work, you have such a steady hand.
Karen Heitzmann Thank you very much. I really appreciate it!!
Beautiful work, loved the step by step, will need to try to make one eventually.....
Thank you. Glad you liked it. Yes, please, make one! :)

Thank you very much. It was my first time making on and it was pretty fun to make :)
Vielen Dank. Es war mein erstes Mal, dass ich weitergemacht habe und es hat Spaß gemacht :)
😊👍👍👍 you always are teaching me♥️
Thanks Gib. I would have a lot to learn from you!! One day, I'll pay you a visit in your shop :)
The Redsmith you are always welcome... What you learn LOL ???? Might be scarey...
We'll see, and if I don't learn anything new (which I higly doubt), I will still be happy to hangout for a while :)
The Redsmith ♥️
Très beau produit avec un réel savoir-faire! 😍
Merci beaucoup !
Wow i love, love it
Thanks a lot, very happy you do :)
Great job !!! Bravo!!!
Thanks a lot!!
Great work!
Thanks a lot :)
Looks great cheers shearing it
Thank you Alex, much appreciated.
You make it look so easy.
All I ever made were pre-made wallet and belt kits from Tandy.
Thanks a lot Marcel. Much appreciated. Kits are not always the best way, some are really bad with misaligned holes and poor quality leather. Sometimes it's better to invest in a few tools and good leather for the same amount of money
Looks like a lot of work but the result is beautiful. Good job
Thank you very much. The hardest part was the reverse engineering. And the sewing. It's always the sewing ;) Thanks for watching.
Made with love.
Yes! Thanks for watching😊
