This song never fails to give me goosebumps and make me cry. I stumbled over it years ago, as my sweet father declined through a dementia which turned him into that child, "banging on (his) crib, excited by noise". Things became surreal towards the end, but this song helped me see him and all of the crazy with deepest love, and to remember him as he was, the PhD, my daddy and guiding light. I miss him so. But every time I play this song I have a little visit with him in my head. Thank you, Rufus, for helping me find my way back to him with love ❤️
This song chokes me up hard. Very raw, very vulnerable, very honest. May Rufus and all the rest of us rediscover the beautiful child that, at our core, we still are. 🙏🏽☮️🕊️🕉️
One of my favorite moments of cinema is the scene in the movie The Baxter where Michael Showalter’s character is running full tilt across a bridge to get to his true love and this song plays over the film. Fabulous piece of music.
I discovered Rufus in 2015, and still, I didn’t “get it”. I lived in RI and waited for him to come to New York (Carnegie Hall) in 2016 before I went to a live performance of his. Then, I “got it.” Now, I follow him to pretty distant venues with a goal of seeing him perform live 12 times each year. I get one trip to Europe each year, and countless trips to Canada and along the Eastern seaboard. I just returned from Toronto, where I heard Hadrian twice (premiere and second performance) last week. This year, I’ll be seeing him perform in Sioux Falls, New York, Boston, Glenside, Bethesda, Charlottesville, Nashville, Atlanta, and twice in Montreal.
When I first came across this rollercoaster of a song late at night in 2010 on tv, I suddenly was so euphoric that I jumped up and danced around wildly in my bedroom although I had been so tired before....couldn't fall asleep then for a while ;-)
Rufus is the best vocalist and melodist alive today. Orchestration! How perfectly tuned the frequencies are! Auffffff!!!! That's 7 years in the playlist. ♥️ from Russia
This song still means the world to me after all these years. Along with the rest of Want One and Poses, it got me through the awkwardness of late teenagehood and the many, many stumbles of early adulthood. TY Rufus for sharing your incredible gifts with the world.
Where the heck have you been!?!? Holy Moly! Dynamic instrumentation! That sound of multiple string guitars! The melody! The subject! Why aren't you bigger!?! That had a George Harrison "feeling". Barb in Pennsylvania. Missing my own kids.
...and banging on my crib excited by noise. I played this song for my "ex"wife when our twins were born...she hated it. How? Listen to everything that is going on.
@Marooth It is beyond words to see him live. I saw him many years ago, shortly after Poses was released, @ Oberlin College in the chapel there. It was a tiny place with incredible acoustics. I cried most of the show because it was that wonderful. If you have the chance to see him live, take it. You won't regret it!
I played this every time my heart was broken. It's funny, I couldn't listen to music at the time, apart from Rufus. He got me through the worst of times and the best of times. Now I am single, I have a cat and my heart has mended over the years. I still listen to Rufus and think about how fortunate I am xx
I already owned Want One and was interested in buying Want Two. I saw that some versions came with the "Live at the Fillmore" DVD so I went on a mission to get the CD that included the DVD. This was 1+ years ago. I found it and am very happy to own it.
@Rufus Wainwright I have been a fan of yours since hearing Beautiful Child in 2007. Then I picked up Want one and two. I've seen you singing on Elvis Costello in 2009
Rufus! What joy to hear you and hear from you. I have just listened to jazz and classical for years. Then 4 months ago my more-aware sweetheart said you must hear this! And it was you and it is music of joy. Thank you!
These lyrics are profoundly dark and could easily be an allegory to an angel who is said to have been the most beautiful of all the angels ever created, who rebelled, was rejected and then cast out. This same angel was uniquely created to glorify his maker with music! Maybe here he uses his gift of music mastery in rebellion against his God. The greatest foe of God on earth is none other than the great musician, Lucifer! Crazy?
@ca95f I agree vehemently. I've seen him with less production and with his voice and compositions, he fills up any hall with melody and rhythms that are very odd but sound simply while they are very difficult (coming from another singer/composer). He is brilliant at what he does and we enjoy the same muses or so I am told. (Wink)
+Scott allen I would too - although I watch this often, even though I know it's not real - but I love this song so much - so if you have any luck with that, please let me know xx
Dear Arielewen78, I'm going to proceed with gentle regard for what I'm going to assume was an earnest curiosity. @Rufus Wainwright hi Rufus. How long? many years... The last time you visited Chile I was so broken-hearted that i gave away my ticket :( BUT always listening your music and poetry to survive this world

This song has saved my life so many times that I want it to be played at my memorial.

Rufus has always had great bands, but this one was truly otherworldly. The vocal harmonies are the best he ever had. What a performance!
theyre all miming, u dufus
Unmatched talent. Almost unfair that so much talent can be contained in one person. Epic talentz, Rufus haz it.
I would step over broken class to have a conversation with him.
How came i love everything Russy does and , almost, every interpretation of it?...

His voice is like that of an angel.
And this performance?
My mind = Splattered around my front room

this is impeccable. it's live and his voice is... perfect. The band is perfect. Astounding.
This is my favorite Rufus song. Close second is 'I'm a Runnin' from the movie 'Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveler!' ❤️

Well, his voice and this song truly inspires.
Been loving him for years, always so glad to see others discover his wonderful music. Such a gifted musician and artist.
OMG he's beautiful ... Haunting , ephemeral , primal , natural
If he was born in the 70s or 80s, he would have been one of the super stars. He's a star to me
He was born in the 70s tho… if only he got the love he deserves!!
❤
Where has he been all my life =P I just ''found'' him last week.... Shame, shame...
It took me 8 years longer.. where have I been all my life...incredible artist!!

Found your music while looking up Natasha Lyonne’s wiki page. Good song & music 🌟💫
This track. The man rocks.

Apparently this is the album version.
Great songwriting and great performance. Almost impossible to achieve this kind of sound in live performance.
Helluva voice!! He also has really cool color-changing eyes.
awesome music, amazing voice!!
It makes me want to cry. So awesome.
Love the trumpet solo!
he is brilliant
There aren't enough superlatives for this genius - one of my all time favourite performances

@private1557 I am so in awe of musicians. The real ones, the best, bring God and magic to us. This song does that. Yes, it does.
@private1557 hey, what's up. Rufus? I love your song so much. It is a gift.

Says a lot about Rufus and his father, too, at least back then.
Ayer recomendé esta rola, espero q le guste por q hoy q la vuelvo a escuchar me vuelve a traumar..!
It's like Richard Ashcroft singing Bruce Springsteen

Almost certain it used to come with "Want Two" album... If not "Two", it was "Want One".
And it's worth it.... Amazing.
want one
Some editions of Want Two come packaged with a DVD “Live at the Fillmore”. I believe that this performance is from that DVD.

this was definitely during his drug phase... look at the sweat. Meth is a hell of a drug.
Drugs are hell, but often the music that artists create while on them is pure heaven. Great, great music, but you pay the price.
What does it matter? Seriously, what does it matter?
@bangmelove289
Normally, I'd make fun of this sort of comment, but it is completely true in this case.
