Sending a hug from the UK to those who need it today. Feels like the right song to be listening to.
That's why I'm here too. Love from Australia to everyone, I'm so sorry for all of this ❤
@@Katherine-w3d thanks. Can I come back? My mother’s family left the UK 4 generations ago. It wasn’t my idea. You let those Germans back in, even gave them a throne.
When I was 15 yrs old, I realized I wasn't welcome inside or outside my house. I ran away to Ottawa Canada. Unfortunately I had to return to the United States. 50 yrs later, I wonder how different my life would have been had I been able to stay. A person never loses the desire to feel free or accepted. Still...after all these years. Thank you Rufus. This song touches me in such a deep and personal way. And you execute it so beautifully.
hey I feel the same way :) I am a human trafficking survivor from America and although I escaped I feel let down by "the land of freedom and prosperity" where I was violently tortured with rape slavery ever since I was born by my family and the other people they brought into our various apartments and no one in America that I asked for help ever cared or tried to help me. For three whole decades! But I'm hoping to go to court and maybe things will turn out for me like they did for the enslaved Dred Scott which started the Civil War and led to the freedom and emancipation of all the slaves. I'm a white girl and mostly was tortured by other white people, although there were some people of color torturing me due to wanting vengeance on my ancestors for enslaving them, even though I'm an abolitionist myself. Also I am a Christian sustained by my faith in God, just like Uncle Tom, from Uncle Tom's Cabin, so I appreciate the line in the song about America saying I'm going to Hell for having loved, because I told the perverts that I am meant to be kind and loving to my enemies to convince them by conversation and empathy-building to stop torturing me and stop being evil and be kind instead and they insisted I was going to Hell, with them, that they'd be lonely in Hell without me. I was trying to live out the "love your enemies" goal. I was convinced they will kill me and I will go to Heaven and not Hell. Also I like the line about soaking the body of Jesus Christ in blood (because I feel the blood they were soaking His body in was mine and the blood of anyone else they have enslaved or raped. Rape is a very bloody experience, not to mention excruciating. And causes long term lifelong damage like the PTSD and nerve damage I now have) Anyway I like also how it says I'm never coming back to America and I have my own soul and my own dreams and my own life to live and there is no way I can fulfill any of that in the Hell-bound America because these are things I've said to American rapists and pedophiles who are all patriotic and going on and on about the benefits of America and how easy it is to torture people here. So much for rights and freedoms that America supposedly stands for. What freedom? I do have more freedom here than I would in Saudi Arabia so I'll give them that, I guess. Getting a college education is possible here and that has been my ticket out of slavery.
You are not alone!
Greatest country.....what a sad, sick joke. I feel too old and scared but I’m planning my exit anyway.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it.
Well written💜
You made me sobbed.... there is no place for hate of fellow human beings regardless of who he & she is..... glad you’re back and wish you all the best. Peace be with you, always.
thank you for your comment. my boyfriend always tell me that i listen to this song all the time, i've never noticed before. i feel related to it because my parents didn't accepted me as gay and throw me away from my home, my town and their hearts. it has been 5 years and i have to go back now, documents problem, and i really don't know what to feel about this. i never talked with them since them.
George Michael did a beautiful version of this song, as brilliant as Rufus. I cry every time I listen to it. I read my life in the lyrics, in my own way.
I just heard the George Michael version of this song! Never hear this song before until today. I didn't know it was written by Rufus Wainwright!! WOW! Awesome Song! I have to find the original to hear it.
GM version is so good, but this have more poety and truth
@@karolakuntz3940yes, I agree
IMO George’s voice, arrangement and live performance from the Symphonica tour lends itself more beautifully to the tormented sentiments in the lyric. Superb song writing be RW.
Both GM’s version and this original are both brilliant and powerful. Wow.
This song will be my therapy for a while 😔
YES
I am 70 years old and cannot believe that I am just now discovering this amazing musician. This song is prophetic and powerful.
What does being 70 years old have to do with anything you said? Are you saying that beyond 69 years old, one does not, should not, or typically doesn't discover new music or musicians?? That's ridiculous. People who love music discover it throughout their lifetime. Putting some sort of age-cap on that pursuit is just stupid.
@@jimswenson6131 No, I believe you misunderstood my comment completely. I simply am amazed that in all my years of loving music that I had not been aware of Rufus Wainwright and his stunningly beautiful music. If you knew me, you would know that I spent my professional career in higher education, working to help adult learners complete their degrees, and I am passionate about the lifelong learning paradigm.
I'm reminded of the expression, "One should not ass u me"

Hello from Canada, to the minority in America who didn’t betray our trust: hang in there, and our arms are open to you
@@blondeenosauce9935 Bonjour / Hi
It's my song about my toxic relationship with CAN.
Every year I said to myself it'll be my last year here, "I'm so tired of (North) America...", and i'll come back home in southern Europe.

But then, I feel I don't belong anywhere...

Thank you , we stood strong and elected Trump and he will lead us all into a golden age!
Been thinking about this a lot. Got out of the navy just a few weeks before we pulled out of Afghanistan. Wish I had never served.
Tell your story to the world so people are more informed. That’s your power.
We saw his father Louden in concert at The Maltings, such a brilliant songwriter, especially his hilarious “there’s a Dead T rump in the middle of the Road”. A privilege also to see Rufus perform this amazingly heartfelt song in Bexhill this year. God help America and the rest of the world.
1. Who loves Louden in Big Fish....
2. Who noticed a bit of early Orson Welles looks from Rufus.
I can't stop playing this song.
So do I... Masterpiece!!!
yeah me too ... over and over :D
MSK what is the song talkig aboat??
And still playing after three years? :-)

Hello Kimberly
I think mines is “ do you really think you go to hell for having loved “

This song & Rufus are revelations unto themselves.☯️
"I may just never see you again, or I might as well". My brother and I used to sing to each other before he passed on 9th of March 2016... I still sing it alone, hoping I will see him on the other side.
❤️
I understand you.
❤️❤️
I love this song. The first time I listened to it was for George Michael in his symphonica concert. His voice is perfect for this beautiful song.
This is how i feel about the US right now. The lyrics are so powerful and true.
“You took advantage of a world that loved you well.”
Ain’t that the sad and tragic truth
"You took advatage of a world that loved you well"
Hello Vanessa
TRUE
I'm sorry to everyone around the world for what America decided on Tuesday, know that so many of us worked hard to prevent this travesty.
Yes, I am here because the lyrics of the song popped into my head as soon as the results were clear.
Sorry for what. America will be better with Trump
I hope Trump brings peace.
yeah, we're screwed. i fully expect america to undergo a very similar transformation to the one the roman republic did when becoming the roman empire, just much more violent, hateful, unbearable, and just downright stupid.
@@hunjo5735Sorry because she obviously thinks he's going to do some bad shit. Isn't it obvious?! This isn't a song that celebrates the U.S. This isnt a place for celebration of the US. If you want that go and listen to kid rock.
Shutttup😊@@hunjo5735
We will find ourselves here again, and again.
Ain't that the truth.
this is painfully accurate, even more than it was 12 years ago.
It’s more relatable today between the aftermath of the George Floyd incident where people LITERALLY burned cities down While rioting and looting, claiming they were “protesting” (they should have protested because black lives matter ✊🏿 but the destruction was completely unnecessary. Then there’s COVID-19 and here in the US we have the highest number of deaths from the virus because our President Trump has refused to do anything. He took advantage of a world that loved him well. We were willing to give him a chance to make things right and he blew it. And the worst part is we’re stuck here because we can’t go anywhere because of the travel ban. And we have an issue with while male cops shooting black men left and right. America should be the best country in the world but idk.
Wait until January 5th, 2021. You have no idea.

I account this song a masterpiece. No words to express what I feel while listening to this extraordinary song, the beauty under the sadness, his voice, the melody... Not music for the masses..... These days.......
I agree.
George Michael did a fantastic version of those brilliant Rufus Wainwright song. George’s vocals on his cover are just amazing.
This song means even more as time passes. Prophetic.
Agree
It’s insightful and an incredible song but I wouldn’t say prophetic, really. The things about the US that disgusted and disappointed Rufus 12 years ago were features of this country for decades before that and have remained since.
He’s just calling them out.
ABSOLUTELY
This song is highly underrated.
Well, I'd rather say Rufus Wainwright is underrated. This song is very good but most of his songs are very good. It seems that he's not cool enough for the kids, he's too mature. So, he remains just musician's musician.
According to you......
damm right this guy is underrated not just this song but him. this guy has truly has a amazing voice that should be a classic known by all, but instead we have the trash we call good music these days. This man should be known by a lot more people.
This song is perfect🌟♥💥🌈
So true !
Rufus Wainwright is an angel. This song is beautiful beyond words
YES YES
By his own admission, rufus is no angel, which makes him and his music way more beautiful
LOl...this masterpiece should have 4 billions views.... not 4 million .
Powerful song, great visuals. Something so melancholy about Wainright's voice.
Martin Harris and a beautiful melancholy at that
“Melancholy” is so on point to describe Rufus’ voice. There is a veritable chemical shift in me every time I hear him sing, especially when it has been my great, good fortune to see him in LIVE concert several times. He is >> MAGIC 🔮
The original visuals were much better, deeper, and told a deeper truth
After carefully listening to both Rufus & George I've come to the conclusion that Rufus has a very haunting voice. The song creeps inside of me. But when GM sings it, its deeply sad and wounding. It makes me cry. Both are done exceptionally well. Rufus probably knew that GM would bring another dimension to the song and GM delivered.
100%
I agree!!!
George Michael much better
Beautiful.George makes me cry it’s absolute.
I totally agree, I think George and Rufus were kindred souls
My first introduction with Rufus was this video playing on Vh1. I remember it was early Sunday morning. Since then I saw him live at least dozen times; wears his heart on the sleeve and sings like his life depends on it. A true artist.
VH1 featuring Rufus & this song unexpectedly convulsed me into tears. I never missed a Rufus concert in the NY/NJ area since. Ever marveling how the spiritually prayerful & passionately decadent do flawlessly emanate from such a one. One in the very same. ☯️
“Tell me do you really think you go to hell for having loved”
Such powerful lyrics especially coming from a gay artist
As a gay man that hit me deep
Is he gay?
Sorry
Giovanni Dias ya Rufus is gay and has a husband
Good for you, I really mean it.
And that makes it a really powerful, potent line. It's not a sin to want to be loved.
I listened to this song in late 2019, at 15 years of age, uncertain about the future. I’m turning 20 soon and I can’t look back without crying. Every day I’m asking myself why things had to be this way and what I’m supposed to do with it. This song reminds me of my younger self, apprehensive, confused, yet full of hope. I don’t know what I am now.
We don't have to be like anyone else - Be your own self
never get tired of this song
You are not alone 😂
I was driving when I first heard this on the radio. I was so taken in by this, enthralled, I'm surprised I didn't crash. Then I saw the video, wow! Beautiful song, profound lyrics, breathtaking orchestration and back vocals, unique voice, and a gorgeous man. Never tire of this. Saw Rufus live at the NAC in Ottawa, and this song was as good with him alone on stage at the piano. George Michael also did a very job covering this, but I always come back to the original.
For those who are wondering what this song is about, it was written during Bush administration and here is what Rufus said back in 2007: "The meaning is very plain, mainly that I'm having problems with the United States at the moment, as we all are. We all love America, I think everybody does in a certain way. But we have to admit that there's just been too many mistakes made in the recent past over too many issues, and we've just got to deal with that fact."
..it's even more relevant today with Obama who is, if anything far worse than Bush, unfortunately. And I was one of those people who cried with joy when Obama was elected the first time around- due to the promises he made during his campaign in 2007 (and of course he has now broke every single one).
We now have renewed drone-bombing campaigns across Pakistan, Guantanamo bay still hasn't been closed and a war on whistle-blowers (one of Obama's many promises was to PROTECT whistle-blowers).
And we'll soon be in WW3 when he attacks Iran or Russia (you just know it's on the cards - they cant help themselves..)

How about Trump?
look at your country now...its like Rufus knew what was coming...the laughing stock of the world
@@SteveFusionX OK..I guess the Trump years decimate all of the above...

George Michael sang this song with so much emotion. Great song, great lyrics, well done Rufus for allowing George to sing it.
I agree. But then GM is the more versatile vocalist out of the two.
Tony Antoniou George Michael brought his pain & internal struggles to this song. It's as if Rufus wrote this for Michael & I'm so glad he (GM) sang it. He gave this song the voice it needed.
Fuck, i didn't know George sang this song. Listened to both. Tought I love George's a great deal, I prefere Rufus's version better for this song. But I don't like Rufus's latest musical turn.
Rufus' version sound more vulnerable and pained I think. George vocals, i felt was too polished
Both versions are good. Why do we always like to compare? That's what the creators of shows like "The Voice", "X-Factor'' etc are trying to promote: personal, distinct interpretations of the same song. A good artist puts his/her own print on the song he/she is singing and playing. The difference of the versions shows the greatness of a song and of those who have managed to make it their own by giving it over and over again a new soul.
The first time I heard this was by George Michael. Listening to this now, I am just captured by this guy's voice. I can listen to it again and again, non stop. Maybe one of the best songs I have ever come across.
@Rufus Wainwright Oh yes, we have, and you are an angel, Rufus!! Thank you so sooo much for your music! Love ya and bless you!❤❤❤
Superbe chanson don't les paroles sont tjrs d'actualité..
The sentiments expressed continue to echo in every day America, every mass shooting, every insurrection, every act of injustice are the reverberations of these echoes. Though we are on the precipice of a great fall, it does not have to be. It’s up to us to not let this town become every town.
You're wrong. 99.9% of America gets up every day and goes about it's business. The news media has to maintain it's cash flow, so you see all sorts of scandal and tragedy, live and in color, in between the commercials. What the media presents is a tiny fraction of our reality.
As a completely straight old guy, I adore this song. I think I can feel and understand a little of the pain..... and the hope.... involved. It illustrated the 'problem' to those of use who have never been on the 'receiving end' of the sh*t handed out.
I first heard it in Cambridge (UK) last year when my wife bought us tickets, thinking it was for Loudon, not Rufus. I wasn't struck on most of the performance but this track and 'Hatred' stood out like fierce search lights. They have not been off my play list since then. Simply superb!
this song has never been as true as it is now. I can't get it out of my head. Thanks for such a wonderful song Rufus!
Rufus, listening to you is like wandering through the red rose garden.♥️
Hauntingly relevant considering the events taking place in Minnesota
His voice makes me want to cry and dance at the same time. I suppose I could learn to multitask, just for him.
George led me here, to the original.. We all know GM is a legend who can most certainly extend and build a song to something beautiful and surreal. I didn't know what to expect from Rufus and I'm excited to see the writer sing how he envisioned. You know what? You can never beat the creator. They're the lifeblood of the song.
La reprise de Georges Mickaël est également fabuleuse.
Mais rufus est incroyable !
I've got so much to give, so much life to live, so little time to save, so much more I should have been. God rest the forgotten genius of his generation. 😢
"You took advantage of a world that loved you well". 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I am so incredibly proud to be from the same city as Rufus, he is a true artist. Montreal has been a harbour for talent for years. Leonard Cohen, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Emile Neligan, Arcade Fire, kaytranada, Xavier Dolan, Jean-Marc Vallée, A-Track, Chromeo, Mordecai Richler, Jay Baruchel, Vice magazine... And thats just off the top of my head. But we get shunned because we speak french... This city is a gem, And i will say it once again. I am incredibly proud to be from the same city as Rufus and all those incredible artists.

I quite like the way Mr. George Michael performed that brilliant song live - available on his excellent Album Symphonica. Rufus indeed was a whole nother experience live on stage - great musicians both Gentlemen.

great song by Rufus, and well done. I found the George Michael cover - and OH MY WORD!!!!!!!!!!! Just next level stuff...
His voice is very dramatic and theatrical. It doesn't matter what he sings it will be awesome. Yes, hunting and mysterious, it gets to you in a very special way. Not only his great voice but his interpretation. His voice has a peculiar quality and to me it seems he is playing with the melody itself with highs and lows and dancing with his registry....
