  • When it comes to Filipino martial arts, most of the combat was developed around the sword. Here, Kirk McCune discusses the three ranges of combat in the Filipino martial art Bahala Na.
Bahala Na Martial Arts, or Bahala Na Martial Arts Association and Giron Arnis Escrima, is a Filipino/American martial art of self-defense created by Grand Master Emeritus Leo M. Giron, a WWII hero and a skilled "bladed warrior." This system encompasses 20 styles, focusing on edged weapon combatives, and offers insights into Filipino/American culture and history. Training in Giron Arnis Escrima/Bahala Na Martial Arts provides self-defense skills, physical and mental conditioning, and a connection to the modern warrior culture, guided by the principles of Wisdom, Strength, and Beauty.

I didn't know Master Roshi knows how to fight with swords, haha! jokes aside, this is useful info. I've always wondered how would swords fare in their range wasn't used. Kinda surreal seeing sword fighting practice at such a peaceful looking place with Master Roshi in casual clothes.

Let these "Pros" fight a trained HEMA Sword fighter and then let's see if its still so easy-going with his technique.

While I agree that serious HEMA fencers are probably the most qualified people when it comes to full contact fighting with blades, I think this guy could transition pretty well to HEMA. He moves well. The long range technique he showed is pretty much an überlaufen and definitely works most of the time, the mid range technique is a weirdly angled static abschneiden that would probably work sometimes. It's only the short range one that I don't see working.

Grandmaster Giron used his art during WWII in the jungles of the Philippines fighting against the Japanese. Which HEMA pro used his art during modern day warfare?

Look to the history of Filipino martial arts to see how it interacted with European sword styles, in fact Eskrima IS partially Spanish.

South east asia, central/south america and africa still see blade fights happening. And for the real life applications the founder of this system fought against japanese during WW2 and used his blade several times.

Or you’re in WW2 running recon missions and need to conserve ammo because of a lack of supplies or maintain stealth and the fog of war is thick in jungle combat and you and your enemy don’t want to accidentally engage in friendly fire, or getting the message out to higher ups and not attracting additional attention, or having a weapon that is also acts as an axe/machete.
Or let’s say something more practical, you’re in a bar, event or family get together or doing yard work, where dress code, security, or circumstance won’t let you carry a firearm and you need another available force multiplier to try and even the odds against someone sick in the head or a wild animal and you grab a pipe or large kitchen knife or saw or ice pick etc.
Point being different times call for different tools. It’s important for a defender to learn to shoot, learn to slash, learn to strike, and learn to strangle.
