  • The Backroad Buddies made a visit to the VanDOit factory in Blue Springs, MO and were led on a fantastic tour by Van Guru Josh Diatte. On our walk through the factory we explored the story of VanDOit and their unique style of van conversion based on Ford Transit passenger vans. We expect the van we purchased to be rolling in and out of this facility in the next few weeks for an early June pickup. That's an event we're excited for.

    The rear external storage rack has a lot of potential uses storage boxes deck hammock chairs etc. awesome 👍

      Although we do not have it on our van, we totally agree! We travel with just two adults and not many toys so we have plenty of space inside our van, but we could imagine that people who travel with more passengers and/or gear would find the storage rack very useful. You can check out the VanDOit owners group on Facebook to see all the different ways people use their VanDOit vans: facebook.com/groups/vandoitowners

    Mold the water/liquid containers to fit the shape/contour/desired height/width, equipped with wheels for easy transport up or down for loading/emptying via a retrievable/stow-away ramp/plank.

    personally , i thynk if you use a naked van , the modularity would work at his best, lot nof space lost by building ON in stead of building UP
    youre a bunch of smart guys , shure you can come up with beter ideas
    grts

      There are pros and cons to building on top of a cargo van vs. a passenger van. We agree that space is lost by starting with a passenger van. A cargo van also gives you the option of finishing the walls and ceiling in the style of your choice, such as wood, felt, or carpet. However, the passenger van comes with rear heat and air conditioning as you're driving down the road along with rows of factory standard belted seats and side air bags. We wanted the option of using our van as a passenger van when we are not traveling. The van is our only vehicle and we have two adult children we want to have belted seats for when riding around town together, along with rear air and heat.

    Great video, wish he stated eta from start to finish! Because people may need to stay in area while their vans are being built. :)

      Glad you enjoyed it! For the eta of a build, it is best to contact VanDOit, as we imagine it is probably changing all the time. They are a growing company and the demand has been growing faster than they have been increasing their capacity.

    Have to say this, while side curtain air bag is good in passenger mode, it is dangerous in build up mode when all the frames goes up against Airbag.

      J Lai, we have forwarded your comment on to VanDOit to make sure we do not give you any misinformation. Just to make sure we understand your comment: are you concerned that there may be T-track framing mounted on top of air bags?

    How well are these insulated for northern territories? Most vans aren’t insulated much for cold and heat exposure.

    • @BackroadBuddies
      @BackroadBuddies  3 роки тому

      When we ordered our van back in 2019, we added VanDOit's "Northern Climate Package" which added an extra layer of insulation to the base layer that VanDOit does by default. We have camped several times in snowy weather and have not noticed any cold drafts coming in from the walls or floor. We'll see if we can get VanDOit to chime in here about what they currently offer and provide details.

      @@BackroadBuddies I can speak into this a little as a Vandoit Guru! Long story short, these vans are well-insulated with even a single layer of the insulation on there working in conjunction with the paneling aleady in the Ford Passenger van. What we have found to be a game changer for a lot of our customers is the Espar furnace. We've heard somewhat jokingly that with the Espar there isn't any need for more insulation. While they are joking, it's somewhat true! Not that we recommend no insulation; the point is with the furnace, your van is suited for pretty much all northern climates. Hope this is helpful!

    I like the video tour, but you keep using the worst camera. You cut to the nice footage for only seconds.

      Yes, we were just starting out with our channel. We mostly used a GoPro for the tour and a friend was using an iPhone as the B-roll. We agree with you, the iPhone did a better job.

    How wide is the space between the cabinets for utilities, which are built around the wheel wells and under the bed? Could you fit 4x8 sheets of plywood in there?

    • @BackroadBuddies
      @BackroadBuddies  4 роки тому

      Great question! We have the high roof GO model (now called the LIV model). Here are the measurements for the setup we have: the gear slide itself is 44.5 " x 63.5", the space between the side cabinets is 45" and the space from the electrical cabinet to the back doors is 68". However, we have carried sheet goods on top of the bed platform which measures 62" x 76". In addition, the sheet goods can overhang the front of the bed platform by up to four feet before reaching the back of the front seats. Just make sure you have a way to secure the cargo, such as ratchet straps. If you'd like, we can put you in touch with someone at VanDOit and they could give you more accurate information as well as discuss all the possibilities of different configurations to fit your needs.

    • @BackroadBuddies
      @BackroadBuddies  4 роки тому

      Another option is to put the sheet goods up on edge under the bed, at a slight angle. When we have our bed platform raised to the highest point, there is 46" between the gear slide and the underside of the bed platform.

    I would order a van with less rear side windows

    • @BackroadBuddies
      @BackroadBuddies  3 роки тому

      VanDOit does their builds on Ford Transit passenger vans, not cargo vans. We're not sure you can order a passenger van from Ford without the full set of windows. That would be a great question for Ford and VanDOit. But we agree with you. The four side windows closest to the rear of the van are not serving any purpose for us with the layout we have. We leave the insulated window shades in those four windows 100% of the time. We originally thought we wanted all the natural light we could get and the ability to see the view out the windows all the way around the van. However, those four windows are under our bed platform, which we keep too high to be able to see out the windows from on top of the bed. Under the bed is storage for us, not living space. We've found that the remaining windows (rear door windows, sliding door window and the opposite window on the drive side, along with the three front cab windows) give us plenty of natural light and a view out in all four directions.
