- Engineers, Chuck and Deidra Kandra came to VanDOit to build their dream camper van on a Ford Transit. Take a look inside our build process and why this engineer couple decided not to build their camper van themselves or "DIY." Visit www.vandoit.com to learn more about VanDOit and our custom van builds.

I find few builders are confident enough about their build to do a video on their processes and build philosopy, so bravo. What I like most about Vandoit is the use of 80/20 as the "bones" of the build for lightweight, strength and durability. What I'm not a fan of is the finished look of the interiors. The interiors look like I'm camping inside of an erector set. I would prefer to have the bones of the build hidden so I can see more visually appealing surfaces like wood grain or composite sheeting. Overall impressive build quality. I would just like to see it done in a van that my wife wouldn't mind also sleeping in. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the feedback Nitram :)
Your opinions and observations are SPOT ON! I'm a DIY'er, but I DO understand the need for high quality, components! I build Portable emergency Power Systems, and I've added some extra personalized custom electronics to my 4 x 4 Ford Pickup. I have used Marine Grade for YEARS!
Thanks Bruce! :)
I share many of the thoughts and tendencies of this engineering couple! So it's super cool to hear his evaluation of the design, build, and process. And, no crazy background music in this video. Great video production too. Thanks for making this.
Thank you Andrew :)
Andrew Schlosser - Actually there is crazy background music.
Super sophisticated lots and lots of wires so you can emulate home. This just helps me to know what I really want. I'll go with the simple life lovable Lou, small wood stove marine grade water pump for my sink. And everything in the van will be done for dual purpose and I'll keep it moving. Disappointed that I didn't see the finished product.
Funny stuff, I went to college with these guys, Diedra was my neighbor in the dorms freshman year? Her husband may have been in my EE classes
How much is going to cost to build a camper van like this ?
Thank you so much for this informative video. Keep sharing such amazing videos in the future also.
Wow. These guys are fantastic. But an indoor shower and toilet would be a must for me. I'm sure they can do that too.
@Chris I have a Class C.
We currently work with a company called evershower, which can be used as and indoor/outdoor shower and is super easy to setup.
What a hilarious couple. I’ve seen van fires. Having a safe system is vital.
I got it. it is not for everyone, you are creating a segment in the market, a niche; we are used to seeing the more conventional interior designs( the flowers, backsplash...teak drawers) It is an excellent concept; it does allow for max flexibility. There is no limit to what you can do, only your imagination....congrats, it took me a while to get it-Engineering background
Thank you for your response. Appreciate the shared knowledge.
Hi, great video! What is the name brand of that foil base foam insulation ?
Great to see a long(er) form video. Thanks!
Absolutely :)
2:35 shots fired!
Adding this company to my short list.
Thanks! :)
Are the two wheel drives decent in the snow? Any issues with chains or cables with the bigger tires? This one sure looks great!
They do handle pretty well in the snow. We do offer 4x4 and Ford factory AWD options as well. Have not heard of any issues with chains or cables. Glad you like the build!
Sweet! I can see so many uses in modular design from camping to a transport vehicle and maybe even a mobile bike shop.
Yes! Thanks :)
Hello, you mentioned the foam based insulation. I am in the UK and will soon start doing up my own van. Could you tell me what the insulation material is called please?
Polyiso foam. If you go to any hardware store that sells foam insulation, they will know what you are talking about.
Oops. My bad. Definitely not polyiso foam.
LOVE this video! Can't wait for our build!
Neither can we! :)
Love the video! Good story and good info. It touches on some of the same reasons we chose a VanDOit van. We can't wait to pick our VanDOit van in a couple of weeks. We wish the best for Chuck and Deidra and their adventures!
Thank You! :)
How does insurance handle this? like, if i get t-boned?
Big like for For vans. Great choice
Thank You Robert! :)
I pulled into a Good Sam campground with my ford transit conversion van that I built myself with a lot of help from Far-Out Ride. I was told that I could not stay in their campground because I don't have a certificate proving that the van was converted by one of the van conversion companies. Has anyone else had that experience?
That's crazy. Time to print out a 'certificate' lol.
how much can you insure the van for? is it true that u need a certificate by a Federal RV manufacturer agency to be approved by the insurance company for the full built price?
This is such a great video! We are purchasing a VanDOit, and it is scheduled to be ready in July. I was really excited about the van, but WOW! If you are looking to buy a van this video really shows the detail and thought put into the van. It also gave me insight into some of the elements like the wiring, heating, and the actual functionality of the VanDOit system. I am past excited - now I can't wait!
What was that insulation they used at the beginning. Foil faced foam insulation.
That would be so awesome.
Thanks! :)
How many issues have you had with the transit. Seems like a lot of people have had issues with these vans.
We love the transit. We have been in the automobile/van business for many years and believe the transit is the best option when it comes to these Euro style vans. Plus, if you do have any issues, there is someone who works on Ford vehicles in every community in America.
4:20 what is ceiling inverted?
Nice van, crazy electric system, like I would my mine !! But the water system looks minimalist... any reason about this?
Thanks for the feedback! We like to keep everything in our vans minimalist without giving you things you won't every use. The cool thing about our water system is you can add as many gallons as you want, and its still easily removable.
What does a build like this cost?
$59k-$111k depending on your needs!
@@vandoitco include van?
@@jlai3861 Yes, this cost includes the van.
Do you guys have a website and not just social media? Would love to chat.
www.vandoit.com
@@vandoitco - thanks! Emailed your team.
Is it really $100,000 to convert?
The price ranges from roughly $50,000-$120,000 depending on options. The van is included in pricing.
Can the lithium batteries handle running a 1500 watt blow dryer?
Hi what tyres did you go for Guys?
They got the KO2 BFGoodrich All-terrain aftermarket tires.
What software are you using? Sketch-up?
Super dall'Italia da Castel beseno TN
Wow
Where is your shop located?
We are in Kansas City, MO!
Couldn't you tell with all the KC Gear!! Go Pats!! Glad you finally won one!! Great Season!!
Brilliant behind the scenes view of the process.
Thanks Bob! :)
Where? Part 2?? Or the final product??
If you watch until the end of the video, you will see the completed van! :)

Is this medium or high roof? Great work! Thanks.
😍😍😍
This is way too complicated for me. I'll just stick to plywood bed, bucket toilet and plastic bin storage... O I forgot! I don't have a van. I don't have the money. And no time for travel. O well!
WANT!
Thanks Will!
model and trim?
this van is build on the Ford Transit 350 XTL
That "insulation" wouldn't work for a Canadian winter lol
We do offer additional insulation as well as an Espar heater that can help keep you toasty even in very cold climates!
@@vandoitco Love it. Thanks!
This just strengthens our decision of why we chose Vandoit! Can’t wait!
Cool Shit! How much for this Rig???
Thanks Rajeev! This one is in the ballpark of $80k!
@16:25 Bro!! Use a drill for that!
To help people with preventive maintenance and perhaps diagnose problems I have linked a video below from a mechanic that works on the Ford Transits regularly...

I rarely give a thumbs down, after 2.5mins of waffle, I did.
Thanks for the support Harry!
80/20 much?
Yes, because there's no water damage, won't rust, and is lighter than wood.
