  • Part 4 of my 1978 Volkswagen Bus restoration series. This video shows more undercarriage prep and POR-15, installing aftermarket sway bar kit, and cleaning up steering box. I also show you how to troubleshoot the horn wiring to make sure it will make contact from the horn button down to the steering box.

Well done! Did you replace the rubber steering coupler too? If you could share where you bought yours. Looking to replace mine, but some apparently are better than the others. Some apparently are even conductive due to metal reinforcements in the rubber, which is a no-go for the horn circuitry. Thanks in advance.

I did replace the coupler and, at the time, didn't realize I used a crappy/cheap part that actually caused problems I discovered later with my horn wiring for a different reason than you mentioned; it was the wrong thickness and didn't allow my steering wheel to set down on my column properly so the horn button ground could make contact. See this video: ua-cam.com/video/BCVlFybAkIA/v-deo.htmlsi=JBZ1AahbQBhSMJLv&t=1704. The best coupler replacement appears to be the Lares 209 coupler. A link to the part is in that other video description. Let me know if you still have questions on that.

The POR15 can pissed me off too. I ended up wasting half of mine because of it. They really need to improve that. Also I probably will never buy POR15 again since it really should only be used for rusty areas you can't remove the rust on, and when you are restoring a vehicle you remove the rust anyways. It is better to get it to bare metal or close to bare metal and using an epoxy primer. The only place I found it to be super useful was on my vent windows on my bus where the metal was super potted and the inside was hard to clean out. POR15 made it look like new when I was finished with it. However all the places I used it on my body I ended up just removing (like under the window rubber).

Yes, I have found POR15 doesn't adhere well to clean metal. I am doing the undercarriage with it because, even though I sandblasted the undercarriage and got all the rust, coatings, and grease off, I have let it flash rust. Even that little bit of flash rust seems to allow the POR15 to cure well to it. But on parts that I have sandblasted or wire wheeled clean and immediately paint, I use primer and that black rustoleum.

Is there an alternative to the POR15 stuff?

Eastwood has a similar product, but it's about the same price. www.eastwood.com/eastwood-rust-encapsulator-platinum-quart.html
