- This is my unboxing of the Rain 5G router i got on Black Friday.
I do speed tests to review the speeds delivered. Rain claims speeds of up to 700 Mbps.
Comment below what your guess is of the speed that i'll get! 👀
Router is the Huawei 5G CPE Pro (Balong 5000, Wi-Fi 6, Dual Link Turbo)

Hey Ash, I'm about to get the 5g on Tuesday and saw you video now I'm not so sure, in currently using 4g and it's not too bad but I'm a webcam streamer so I need a strong connection. Do u suggest I get the 5g still. Will I have good quality streaming with 5g in your opinion. Let let me know as soon as u can
Hmmm, it’s tough. It really depends on the area - if they say you have 5g coverage, that isn’t enough - mine was dark blue saying I had coverage, but I got useless speeds - sometimes even zero.
It’s heavily impacted also by the building type. I’m in an apartment block with lots of concrete - so if you have lots of buildings around you, the speed is gonna suck.
I want to recommend it so badly, but I just can’t. From my experience, I say it’s a waste of money. Get fibre if you can. Even a slow fibre line is so much more consistent - this supposed 700meg 5g connection is useless if 70% of the time it’s under 10 meg and sometimes completely zero.
Fibre is solid and consistent and never wavers in speed. If you pay for 50 meg you get 50meg always.
So I say no, try for fibre first.
I will only consider 5g again when I hear that the regulators have opened up the real 5g spectrum for us - because this product they’re offering isn’t actually using the 5g spectrum. It’s 5g tech on the 4g spectrum.
@@AshGlover well thank u so much, now i have no idea what to do or which company to go for about the fibre, let me do more reach then. thx again ill try looking for other options
It is slow I get over 100mps on mtn 4G
I am in a different country where my provider supports 5G and gave me the outdoor router (n5368x) for roughly 7 us dollars which installed in the roof. I have full signal but i am paying roughly 60 us dollars which has a speed cap of 40mbps down and 10 mbps up and i get 9ms ping. I only get access to the login screen which shows full bars for 5g. Should I upgrade to a plan which has no speed caps
Love the curb your enthusiasm credits!! XD killed me there.
🤣🤣🤣
Cool video, thanks so much for the great unboxing 👍🔥🔥
My pleasure! 😁 now to earn some more cash so I can buy more stuff to unbox! 😂🤣
I feel for you man. I'm with rain 4G and I'm going to change to something else soon because I've been getting 0.50 kbps speeds since November last year. I've had enough 😒😒😒 Thanks for the great video, your personality is dope 😊 and your cat is so cute!! Take care.
Hey, Thank you, sir! hope you find a good solution!
Same issue waste of time
Nice video. I was so shocked at the end, when you concluded that the rain experience was "really good" lol!
Haha! Yes the experience was amazing... If only the product was good! 😂😂😂
Omg, o love the cat
Thank you!
They are so cute! 🙂
I'm so a pet person, absolutely love pets, but I cant imagine being so patient with a cat while filming. It is soooo distracting for a viewer to watch this video. Majority of the time I was looking at the cat's rear. But your deliverance was really good and I love the fact that you transparent with your audience.
haha thanks for the feedback!
Ill wait to buy it thanks for the review
My pleasure! Yes hopefully it improves in a couple months
This video took a turn I did not expect.
even me
Lovong the boet fighter shirt 😂👍🏾🔥
Yayayaya China! 🤣🤣😂
I'm guessing the person that got 700 Mbps stood right next to a 5g tower 😂
This helped a lot. The salesperson I dealt with said you just plug and play which is misleading. Thanks for this info. Received the package yesterday, just waiting for them to send the activation email. Crossing fingers 🤞🏼
Awesome! Glad I could help! Yes, there's a few "gotchas" in the process that they don't tell you about
Thanks for the video dude food for thought
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the review. Just ordered dis ting. Lockdown will be bearable.
I hope you get decent performance! Post back when you have it installed! 🤞🏼
@@AshGlover Yo Ash, I just got done activating it like only 2 hours after delivery. The Rain guy set everything from his end and then called me to let me know it's up and running. Mind you he's working from home with his kids running around screaming in the background driving him crazy. 5 star customer service to start with. I got the Home Standard package, speeds of up to 30mbps. Rain's speedtest clocked me at 160mbps. Haha. But I did the real speed test, downloading a file. Speeds averaged at about 2.5MB/s, I saw a high of 3.8MB/s. I love it. The scathing (and somehow hilarious) HelloPeter reviews would have you thinking otherwise. It almost seems too good to be true for R699p/m. I just hope it lasts.
Ok, awesome!
The high five killed me 😂😂😂
😂🤣
Mine’s getting delivered today, so excited🤩
Please reply back with your Speedtest.net results! So keen to see how up and download speed and Ping are doing on the network now!
How's it going with your 5G? I'm thinking of getting onboard
At home we use this , its quite good 💯
I've never laughed this hard 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
I believe rain can pull it off but right now they just need to work on the infrastructure but next year I'm sure we'll be hitting 700mb. Love the BoetFighter shirt ♥
Yes I hope so! I hope they put a lot of money into infrastructure and get the consistency up!
I agree with you. Generally, 5g struggles with obstructions, so they will need to install more nodes or build more towers for it to run faster. Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/_CTUs_2hq6Y/v-deo.html
The tower I connect to is a robot away, but I only get around 250mbps and it disconnects sometimes, simply because there's a Gautrain line between my house and the tower. My partner's house is on the tower side and she gets constant speeds
What frequency does Rain use? 2.4 / 5Ghz?
Or do they have licensed frequency to ensure better quality and speeds?
It’s interesting, it’s a single network that’s both 2.4g and 5G, for the wifi. It uses wifi 6, which is an improvement on the older one.
And then in terms of the internet signal coming in, that is a different spectrum for the 5G internet, I believe. To get the supposed faster speeds which I’ve not yet seen.
what is the coverage like now as well are you within a decent radius of the coverage area, and do you have decent line of sight, any obstructions like walls and trees as the 5g frequency degrades a shit ton through obstructions. Just asking so i can get a good read on things don't wana spend on something that's not gana work properly.
The coverage map told me I was squarely within full coverage. The speed was appalling, like in the video - it never improved past that.
I’m in a 4-story apartment block though, lots of concrete, which as you say degrades it badly - but I even tried having the router all the way out on the balcony with clear sight of the open skies - and even bought two external aerials and put them 5-10m apart in different configurations - didn’t help. L
Basically I was very glad I could return it for a money-back refund, it took a while to be paid back, but they paid me my refund, so that’s good. I returned it after a few days.
I would say - make sure there’s still a 100% money back available, and test it at your house, and if it’s less than 500meg, I would return it. It’s stupid to shout about “up to 700meg”, when their own minimum standard is 70meg - if they give you 70 meg speed they feel like they’re giving you 5G. I disagree. You can’t offer 10% of the advertised maximum number, that’s ridiculous.
I think in 2-3 years maybe 5G networks will be solid and well distributed and maybe then it’ll be worth it - but right now, IMO, unless you’re sitting in Rain’s boardroom, don’t bother buying this 🤷🏼♂️
I know UA-cam is a Cat loving platform but WOW!! If I hadn't really wanted to see the outcome because I'm waiting on my router to be delivered, I would not have finished the video. That being said great to see the review, I'm hoping for better speeds because the optimizer shows a base station right on the roof of my building and 10 others within 900m of me.
Hope it works well for you!
@@AshGlover Had it about a month now, its been consistently giving me what it promised so im happy 700gb later.
Cant wait for 5G 🤤
14:35 is where I have decided to upgrade to fibre rather than 5G. Adorable cat btw!
Thanks! He's a cute lil guy! I'll tell him Voltr Baldr said so! :D
Heya, enjoyed the vid, but I got a question, does the sim card work on rain's 4g network? I'd like to purchase this since it's better than any other provider in my area, yet no 5g coverage but 4g coverage here.
No, I have a rain 4g Mifi, and actually that seems to get better speeds than the 5g router did when it was switching back down to 4g. I recommend getting a 4g one until their 5g network is decent.
got 1000/100 fiber as well as rain. What I've noticed is that on EU West servers the difference in ping usually averages around 15 to 30 more on the 5g than my fiber. It is in no way better than fiber, but for someone who has yet to have it laid in there area I'd recommend as long as the towers aren't congested.
just surprised why it says MTN SA there, thought rain didn't support roaming
Thanks for thr info
I get about 450-550 mbps download and 8-20 mbps upload speeds on rain 5G I had it for the past month and I'm getting the same speed all the time
Clinton Rall that download speed is awesome! I feel like they just didn’t really test that all areas they’ve marked as “5G coverage” on their map actually have 5G coverage, that’s what it feels like to me.
The upload is still not good, but most people don’t need that too much. I’m a web dev so I use upload a lot.
What’s your ping and jitter like?
Ash Glover my ping is usually about 3-7 ms and jitter about 0,5- 3 ms which affects my gaming because I usually had about 1ms ping and 0,1 - 1 jitter on my 200mbps fibre line
Ya, there is a pretty wide variance in it all. I think it's early days and a friend mentioned that the more routers come online, the stronger the signal will get, because it's a mesh network.
Hopefully it gets stronger!
I'll try it again in a year's time or so
Ash Glover Tip: download the HAUWEI Hi link app and login as a admin then you will see on top there is a signal Indicator then move your router around the house( it's best next to a window) and see where it has the best signal and do a test again....it helped me a lot
Ash Glover I'm probably not that smart but how does it work if there is more routers online the signal wil get stronger because of the mesh network?
Guys do advise of the health aspect of it, is their 5G safe? i currently have their 4G which works well, but hate the cut off time
There isn’t really a link between 5G and viruses and all that. It’s all fear-mongering stuff. I would say look out for real scientific tests as they start happening more, but these are just radio waves like 4g and wifi and cellphones and all the rest, just a different wavelength. I returned this 5g because of the slow speeds, I have 4g as my backup, but yes, that 6pm cut-off is a pain!
@@AshGlover every time nex gen 2g, 3g and 4g was released there was an increase. Do your research but not deadly the 5g you tested is not that bad bad the 5g short wave ghz is bad BUT will quickly get a video 4 you from a doctor who if you go to he's website in the description he proves everything with facts I also never believed the kak people were talking...
I am not saying that covid19 is link to 5g NOT AT ALL, do your research go to his site and see what is what will come back and add a video here where the link is in...
What you guys need to remember this is not the short wave 5g...
Fiber will always be better even if short wave 5g releases...
The cat is killing me
Hahaha!
balong 5000 is a chipset used in Huawei CPEs
This was the very next video that came up when searching for "How to connect to rain router"" :-)
Ya this video has done quite well! So many views and a ton of watch time!
Did you get any Antennas and any recommendations for a specific Antennas?
I did get 2 antennas, but they didn’t improve the signal at all - I returned the 5g cos it was useless.
So sadly I can’t recommend any antennas cos the ones I got didn’t help at all! 🙂
For me it’s a different story..., I live in Pretoria and on the Rain website I’ve reached 400 but never got it usually i get just a 100 down and 10 up which is very sad tbh ping is also ok (10-20) And I’ve only had problems tbh their customer service is terrible and the servers are off half of the time for me
Ya, the inconsistency is terrible. They need to sort it out, it’s just not ready for prime time.
"Just shy of 700mbs" 😂😂😂😂😂
🤣😂🤣 pretty dismal if we honest! 😂
@@AshGlover i CANNOT make this up, so as i finish watching this video, i walk past my dad's office....busy setting up the 5g router😂😂😂😂😂
Layf Van Der Merwe post what speed he gets! Very keen to see what other real world speeds are happening out there!
I’ve already contacted them to return the router for refund - clearly it’s not gonna work for me. But maybe other areas are a lot better!
@@AshGlover o geez, yeah, ill message you on Twitter as soon as its on and working 🤞
Layf Van Der Merwe ok we’ll chat next week then 😂🤣
Hi Ash, just a follow up. Did the speed improve? I received mine yesterday and had it activated today. I've had it connected for less than hour and the connection is very poor and it keeps going off. Trying to connected with Customer Service is a hassle because the connection keeps getting disrupted and I'm sent back. I just wanted to find out from you if it gets better or I should just start shopping around again
No it never improved for me - I returned it and got my full refund. It’s got potential but I just feel it’s not ready for the public yet. They definitely don’t have coverage in the areas they claim to have coverage.
Qaqamba Walaza small world
@@mihlalisontundu9660 small world indeed, 😂. Ps it really is a crap network. No use leaving Telkom for them
Also isn't this an outdoor router? I may be wrong but I think I saw that on rains website.
This was the indoor router that they launched with - they changed to an outdoor one later
Hi, thank you so much for this. Can I use the Router without the 5G Simcard? I have an activated 4G Simcard and due to my lockdown location, I cannot use 5G. Will I be able to activate the Router?
No it doesn’t work, I actually tested this! 🙂
@@AshGlover OH no what a shame. Thank you for the response
What’s super weird is with the 5g card in, if there’s no 5g, it switches to 4g, supposedly. But it won’t do 4g with a 4g sim. Very weird!
i just got my 5G router today and I received the sim activation email at around 20h00 but it is now 21h00 and I'm still unable to get a connection. HELP
Did you set the apn settings to "rain" ?
Thank you.
Welcome!
Hey I am commenting 7 months after this. Can you do another speed test because I am considering purchasing it because he area I live in isn't fibre ready
Ah I'm sorry, I returned it, it was too bad, so I don't have it anymore!
The question is what ping would you get when gaming. Like would you get lower ping then fibre can? I have 20mbps fibre and get 170 ping in Fortnite. Could you do a ping test on 5G in Fortnite and Call of duty for me?
Hey dude! I’ve already boxed it up and returned it - but the ping will be terrible in gaming. The jitter was also very very bad - which means how much that ping fluctuates.
For example my ping will be around 4ms on my fiber. On the 5G, the ping was so widely varying between like 10ms and 200ms and up, even. It was really the worst part, and the main reason I returned it. Gaming would be shocking on it, and the speed is just so inconsistent, it makes it frustrating. One day you get 80meg speed, 20mins later it’s doing less than 0.5meg. That’s so infuriating!
Ash Glover thx.
Gambit is the cutest!
He’s a special boy! And soon he will have a little brother, I’m meeting him tomorrow! 🤞🏼
Your babies are coming in the next week, aren’t they?
@@AshGlover Aww! That is so precious. Yes! I went to go choose them on Wednesday, a boy and a girl (Lola and Diego) (kittens). The lady just needs to come and do a house check, which is on Sunday and then I can go and pick them up! I am so excited and thinking of maybe creating an Instagram account for them. :)
Mmmm anyone been able to unlock manual network selection?
what fibre line are you currently using?
It’s a 100 meg down, 50 up fibre line from Vodacom Fibre 🙂
I would love to see you test it with the external antennas.
Ah, I should’ve recorded that - I did go and get 2 externals, and tested the speed with the aerials in a range of positions and orientations, they essentially did nothing. The speed wasn’t any better by any noticeable metric - after that, I returned the unit. They may think they have coverage of 5G in my area, but they sure don’t! 🤷🏼♂️ and I’m close to Fourways, Johannesburg, and the coverage map indicates I have full coverage. But nope, not true at all!
Ash Glover It just occurred to me that another test you could have done was with a computer lan connection directly to the router as some of the speed may be attenuated through the Wi-Fi . This does not excuse them not even coming close to the claimed 700Mb/s. With a small number of early adopters latency should also not be a problem. For R1000 a month RAIN needs to do much better.
I'm getting about 500/40. But the routers WiFi doesn't go above 100. I have no idea why
Oh that might be cos you on the 2.5ghz channel - try the 5ghz channel - big difference!
Heyy ash wats the name of the app to see where u should put ur router plz share
Hey roysten, it was the default part of the setup, I forget what they called the tool but it was part of the default setup process
can i have the name of the track you jamming there
The point of 5G is to get wireless fast internet without fibre I'm thinking of upgrading to rain 5G
Did you get the external antenna? And how did it perform if so...
I did - the change was minimal. Not enough so I returned it and got a refund!
Ok cool thanks for the feedback 😀
😂😂😂 I laughed so hard
😂😂😂
I'm getting 12 right now with rain 4G my family would be happy even with 250 mbps
Yes for sure! That’s very true!
It does not go 250mps,It's more like 1mps😂🤚Trust me I'm using it rn
Sweatshirt I am also using Rain and have been for the past 4 years
Good one Ash, I will look for a better service provider
Ya man, I’m very sad about it actually! Was so promising!
@@AshGlover the marketing department didn't think you will test it LOL
hahaha!
Yhoh... 😮
There goes my life. I was lied to by my agent. She assured me there was fibre coverage and she was 100% certain. I signed the lease and then boom - no fibre.
I opted for Telkom. 220Gb/220Gb and it works, but the 220 day date is not enough I'd move to Rain since there's coverage in the area.
It feels like my world is crashing. I moved to Pretoria, I was lied to, then lockdown happened 3 days after I moved and I can't get a decent internet connection... 😭😭
Ah man, I hate it so much!! Also these coverage maps are NOT accurate! It’s so frustrating.
So do you recommend? Haha
hahahah! you know, i wish i could....
I have the 4g sim it works okay but recently I'm only get 4mbs so its not so great. Can't Wait for the 5g sim to hit Durban maybe the speed will get better❓💯
Yes, they get a ton of complaints about their 4g network. I use their small 4g mifi for my backup internet when my fiber goes down and I find it quite good. The speed isn’t good at all, but it’s ok, and pretty consistent. I think it gets between 10meg and 20meg most days. Which is fine for a backup. For a main connection it would be very annoying!
Do you think I need to get a mesh system because I'm using a Huawei b315 router at the moment
I kw in America they get 2gb a second that's fast. We can't even get 700mbs
Just realised I commented on this video a while back lol
No amazed...not worth going over because if that's their "best attempt", how bad will it be on a normal day or how consistantly can they deliver that speed
this is my worry - it fluctuates very badly. and there can't be that much network congestion yet... imagine in 6 months when there's hundreds of thousands of people on the network. it'll probably be a good day when you get these speeds :-/
5G just came out. It’s still being worked on. The signal must have been bad.
Awe ASH I need your assistance to set up my CPE N5368X I'm not getting any assistance from rain customer service
Sorry man, I can’t help with that! Keep trying rain! 😁
This is exactly my experience - and the connection is so unstable.
That’s very disappointing because it’s a few months later and still no good. Hoping they get their network sorted out after this coronavirus subsides.
iget 700 download and 100 upload in kuwait
I think don't cheap out on your fibre and get faster fibre and stop using wireless its always gonna be lacklustre to fibre a wired connection
Totally! Always worth getting the best fibre you can. 100 Meg is the fastest I could get at that location. I can now get 200 which is good!
If its ip68 rated you could leave it out on the balcony :-) Yikes, they have some work to do on the infrastructure rollout it seems...
It’s already returned! 😂
But it sure didn’t look outdoor friendly!
@@AshGlover that one is for indoor use, there's a different one for outdoor use
i'm very disappointed in Rain, thought upgrading would help but I've been out of internet for 2 days, with no response
Ya they're unfortunately just not very good. :-/
Call them maybe
nice video
thank you!
only bad thing is Rain does not support port forwarding
Ya that’s a pain!
Its actually nit that bad i pay for a 8mb download and 3 mb upload R795.00 p/m and thats the norm for internet in Tzaneen.
Sho, that’s so expensive hey!
They need to bring down data costs in Africa, this is madness!
Hmmm.... I agree with you. Promise less and over-deliver. Let's face it, if you were promised less, and got more, wouldn't this un-boxing have a SUBSTANTIALLY different done? I'd be very keen to know what your experience is if you do get an aerial? Is the package uncapped / unshaped? Even at 70 megs that is faster than my current fiber of 50/50, and slightly cheaper!!
For an average user, the speeds you are getting is perfectly fine, but when you are a gamer, or specifically need the high end, then you want what is promised.
It's not unshaped - it's actually heavily shaped. i see that my upload speed can be as low as 5meg even if the download is higher. It is uncapped though, so that's nice.
i will get the aerials and test it again. But combining the very inconsistent speeds that can range from literally zero to a pretty good 200meg - that inconsistency will drive me insane. i'd rather then stick with fiber and know i get 100meg, every time, no matter what. i need that for work, for sure!
And the other concern for me is the ping and jitter which are not at all good - gaming from SA is tough enough without jitter and bad ping! :D
@@AshGlover I think the one plus side of the 5g is that it is relatively mobile compared to something like fiber or adsl. All you need is a plug point. And obviously 4g or 5g coverage. That means you can _almost_ get away with only having one data contract if you are a person that travels a bit for work.
Ashley Svensson very valid point!
My friend also said that in theory also the more people are added to the network, the stronger the signal becomes - the routers all form a mesh, almost. So perhaps it will improve. Sheesh this is a tough decision!
So should i get fibre or 5g??
I would definitely get fibre rather! Waaay more consistent speeds.
@@AshGlover thanks definitely will do
I saw the reviews, they were not very nice but that was 4g WiFi, so i guess this should be very good.
Nah this isn't a great product yet!
How much do you pay for your fibre
I pay R1700 right now to Vodacom Fibre, so it's expensive, but it's a super high cap, 2TB.
The speed is 100meg down and 50 up, and it's super consistent. Never below those figures.
11:28 Before comment: Upload / Download = 50 to 60 Mbps / 10 to 15 Mbps
So my uncle has this and he gets download of 300-200mbps, upload of 50-60mbps, ping of 30ms
Ok that's pretty ok. The trouble is their website shows that you have full coverage but you'll have nothing. So it's so Risky to know if you gonna have a decent connection or not!
Rain will disappoint you mxm
Does the router come with a lan port ?
It does, yes!
You sure you did the speed test correct? You weren't connected to the rain network when you did the speed test . I did it myself so it should've said rain as isp, its just strange .
How much is your 🙀 I want it
🤣🤣🤣 So flippin cute hey! :)
2021 and it still bad cant play games or watch a video on youtube 720p@60
Damn. Rain had such promise, but they're not delivered on that. Very sad!!
So is it trash for gaming
Yea I believe it will be - the ping is too high!
How do u have such good ping
Ah i love it so much! Lucky that the Vodacom Fibre network is actually pretty reliable!
300mb?
lol rip
Where you from?
South Africa! 🇿🇦
Do u think it is worth it
Nah I don’t think so! Too inconsistent right now. You could get zero connection even inside a coverage zone. That’s too risky for me.
700mb is for R999 deal that uses outside router
They've now changed it to that, when i did the video they were advertising the 700meg for this router and deal. The Advertising Standards Authority has cracked down on them a lot recently for misleading claims.

It says you can get speeds up 700 mbps dude. Doesn't mean you'll get 700
True - but if they saying speeds of up to 700meg - where is the bottom cut-off for what we call acceptable? They reckon if you don’t get consistently 80meg, then they won’t activate it. But for me - just over 10% of the speed they shout about is not a good enough “lowest offering”.
I think, if you offering a connection product with an advertised speed - if it doesn’t get to at least 70% of that speed, then they need to revise their marketing. You can’t say you offering 700meg if you’ll only get that speed when you sitting in their boardroom! 😂
If they tell me I have coverage, I should get something close to what’s advertised, and less than 10% of that is not good enough in my book!
@@AshGlover Yeah you right dude. This is the first gen device do i expect it to be better in a year or two. The way the government handles spectrum could be longer lol

Are you getting the 700meg they promised? That’s awesome!
What’s the ping for you?
It’s not the unit, it’s the area - they say it’s full 5G coverage here but it’s just clearly not yet. I think they need to not mark areas as 5G available until they actually test that you can get 700meg in that area.
Do u get the full 700mbs and are you using the router that came with❓

pretty damn good actually! How is the ping?
@@AshGlover The ping almost got to one, but unfortunately it has dropped, but it's still over 100mps. It's actually extremely inconsistent. Ever since we've gotten it, it would be as low as 1mps, but it's highest has been 605mps.
620 mgbs guess
If only! Try 6 on a good day 🤣
Wtf I'm with three 5g in uk unlimited data on monthly plan with this router and I get around 182mbs or sometimes 203 mbs download around 24 mbs to 30mbs upload and only for £22 month and that seems to be better then most landline broadbands at a really good price
Our 5G network here in South Africa is still very bad!
Love the Cat
