- In this video, I take a blank patch on the Boss GX-100 and show how simple it is to create a high-gain guitar tone.
Ever since I received the Boss GX-100 Ive been utterly blown away by the great tones and the simple yet fully featured Boss GX-100.
Here is what Boss says about the BOSS GX-100
Fusing advanced BOSS tone technologies into a sleek, ultra-modern hardware design, the inspiring GX-100 delivers top-level performance everywhere you play. Explore 23 AIRD amplifiers and over 150 effects derived from the flagship GT-1000, and craft great sounds in seconds with the intuitive color touch display. Up to 15 simultaneous effect blocks provide unlimited tone possibilities, coupled with deep real-time command via onboard footswitches, an expression pedal, and external control support.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.
When Boss and Roland get serious, the game changes completely.
❤Brilliant best 10mins tutorial I've ever seen on a GX100❤
Thanks Rat! I sat with my GX and this video, step by step, a few pauses and rewinds and the result was great so thank you I'll be sure to check out some of your patches for download save me a lot of time
Paul thanks so much for really useful instructional videos. You are an exception to all the over complicated noise on UA-cam. Much respect from a plain ole layman!
I like how you describe what you are doing and why you are doing it. It really helps to determine how to achieve the sound I want.
You are achieving fantastic tones out of that ! I gotta go try some of your settings!
Thanks very much for this Paul! Awesome help! 👌
Thanks Paul - this an inspiration for playing around and really get to know this device
Great demo, thanks!
Paul, love the way you explain the features of the GX-100. I got one because of your videos. Excellent tutorials. I'd love to come up with a GX-100 preset that emulates the smooth Johnathon Cordy sweep tones
Hi Paul - great video and indeed useful. Thanks a lot and awesome playing by the way ❤️ Best regards
Outstanding video and tone.
Amazing!! many thanks for this great info!
Very nice sound, and awesome guitar
Great sounding unit mine comes tomorrow....Great informative video...cheers
Sounds great! I got mine a few days ago, and I'm loving it. Set up a killer preset for my tribute band, with a clean amp and a dirty amp, and plenty of switching options to create what essentially amount to 3 snapshots/scenes plus toggling a couple individual effects. Amazing piece of gear.
New guitar looks and sounds great 😎🎸🤘🏻
Thanks Paul ! This is a fantastic demo. Mine arrives on Monday and I'll be coming back to this demo for sure.
Still got it?
@@swardmusic Indeed I do
I enjoy these videos, you have a great way of explaining things. A few weeks ago you were extolling the GT-1000 Core, now you seem to have switched to the GX-100 exclusively, but presumably the comments and setup of the patch in this video apply equally well to GT-1000.
Cheers Jeff. I haven’t done a GT1000 vid for at least 6 months, but yes it all applies to the GT1000. All the best
@@TheStudioRats Krickey, how time flies.
thank you for this demo!
Sure thing!
Watching your videos makes me want a GX-100.
Its a really great unit.
Brilliant high gain tone.
Ambient tone GX100 next, please
Bought it today, so thankful you uploaded this video. I follow all your videos, especially Fractal’s !!
Cheers Jorge.
awesome, thank you!
Thanks very much this really helped 👍.
I just subscribed... thank you for this interesting video... just got the GX saturday
you explain very well, it's easy to follow👍 hope you make more clean sound settings on it, boss gx-100🙏🏼
These tones sound excellent
Great Toneeee !!
Love your videoss Paul .. . Would love to see more on the gx 100 .. it's capapbilities. ..making tones of certian songs .. or guitar artists .. like satienani .. vai .. Eric Johnson .. ..
Cheers ..have a great day ..!
8:34 a shortcut for assignments in the effects view: long press the knob below CH SELECT and it will create a new assignment for you, though you'll still need to enable it and select CTL1 as source.
Hi Paul (from France ;-) and thank you for your videos about the GX-100 !
One question: did you have setup your Global EQ or you are using the EQ defaults settings? If yes it will be very usefull for us to share your own settings...
thanks
Great instructions. Thank you. I finally got that gear and it's really sounds great. Maybe some firmware update is needed to correct slow changing and saving preset with apps. I hope Boss will do it.
Hey Paul, all of your tutorial videos are exceptional, but I have a question. I'm using my GX-100 direct through the PA at my church for Praise & Worship except it just sounds bad! We've tried "gain staging" but it still sounds bad. Someone suggested I may need to turn off the amp simulation in the unit. Is that a viable option and is it possible? Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge.
Just bought a GX-100 as replacement for a board of pedals. Delighted to find a raft of no-bullshit TSR vids to help shortcut the learning curve.
Hey Paul! When running the gx100 through the power amp in on katana MK2 100 with IRS off, do these settings still apply? Any additional advice? Thank you
Wunderschöne Klang.
Excellent video. Thank you. I am going to buy one of these soon. In the USA I have had offers for 500.00 New.
Paul is there a volume setting to level the volume between patches? I have volume jumps between some of my patches. Thank you!
Love your videos for the Katana, and I used some of your settings on the WAZA Air that worked using Katana settings. I’ve had a Pod Go for about a year, but ready to go back to Boss. Love the multiple guitar input setups as my go-to guitar is a Carvin DC150 and just got a Kiesel with Lithium pickups that are very hot. Do you know if Boss came up with any easy way to copy sounds between their products vs. recreating everything manually?
The best video of the gx 100 on ytb
I'm going to do my best to have it one day ❤️
Rookie question - do you run this directly into a speaker cab, or is it still plugged into an amp, like you would a normal effects pedal? Thx!
Sounds great Mr. Paul! I received my gx100 two weeks ago, and it's great, especially in a terms of easiness of use and programming, no doubt about that!
I play it through pa, and I think that only week point are internal ir cab simulation.
Do you think that too?
Hello,
Thanks for that : very instructive but, if I may, just two little questions :
Is it possible to mix bass amps and effects with guitar amps and effects, whether it be on a single chain or a divided one ? Like, if I want to use a bass comp and distortion but with a guitar amp, or use a divider block to run parallel a bass amp and a guitar amp with matching speakers on both, is it doable ?
Then, in case of divided chain, can I get each one on a different out so that I can record each on a different track simultaneously on my daw (and, then, getting the clean path on one track and the distorted one on another, for example) ?
Thank you.
Hi Paul , I’ve seen some reviews of the GTX 100 , some say the drives are thin and lack lustre , you’ve blown that out of the water , how would you compare it to the Helix and Headrush ? , thanks
Hi Dave, i don’t find the drives are thin at all.
Very helpful, Paul. I’m rather new to your channel and really am enjoying what you guys are putting out. I’m considering taking the plunge into a digital solution for playing at home and recording. I’ll try to tune into your live show and ask then; I’d really like to hear your opinions on pros/cons of some of the top options. Specifically GX100 and HX Stomp.
Hi James, happy to answer any questions you might have, the show is live every Wednesday 8pm BST
Excellent presentation Paul!! Great job! Musician/Artist USA- ThomMeinert
Cheers Thom
Sounds f***ing awesome
Thanks Paul, appreciate you putting this video out there. You always do such a great job explain in a way that I follow. You were extremely helpful with your Boss GT 1000 videos. What was your reason for changing to the GX 100 from the GT 1000?
Cheers , I didn’t change, Boss just needed product videos for the GX.
Great tones!! Just one question, what pickup do you have on the bridge??
Thanks!
Paul. Great video sir.
Does this have any pitch shifter tones effects like a harmonizer ?
Thanks so much sir. ♥️🤘♥️
Great video.. AWESOME sound!! Can we PLEASE let us know how you are set up? Output from Boss GX-100 is going into what? Tx
Paul thank you , I HAVE THE BOSS ME 90, I LOVE IT BUT I THINK YOU SOLD ME ON THE GX 100 MUCH BETER
Great video.....This unit looks great. I have a couple of questions I play mostly by myself in the basement
Would it be better to play something like this through Powered speakers , a small combo amp or other... Looking to get a good sound without having to blow my windows out. any help would be great.
Hi Paul how do I add the volume control on this patch I have no control over the volume pedal
Cheers Chris
Paul just got the gx 100 my only question is how do i make/or find a blank patch to create my own patches? Can't find it anywhere?
What cab did you use? Sounds awesome!
Is it possible to make dual path to go foh with cab sim and to stage monitor without ir and not loosing effects after cab sim?
Nice explanation. However, since you're using the same kind of amp block, I think the assign control would be the best solution instead of wasting the divider section
Are there any plans for a side by side comparison with the gt100? is it worth it to upgrade?
1 question sir on this patch you made did you use an amp with fcm?
Hi Paul.; first, thanks a lot for your videos ! I'd like a little help : I cover Deep Purple's HIGHWAY STAR with my band. I'm trying to find a way to get the right harmonization for the (2nd solo), but there's always a wrong note : it's important to notice that we play detuned (Eb Ab,...etc); so instead of G we play it Gb ....can you help me find the solution ? Thanks a lot
Hi Vince, if it’s not diatonic, the only way to do this is to have a patch change when you hit that note. Or to have the controller pedal to change the pitch when you hit that note.
I was thinking about upgrading from my GT-1 to a GT-1000, but I might save $500 and just go with the GX-100 now.
Can you play a loop riff at the same time you are dragging effects in the chain so you can quickly hear the difference?
Any chance of you doing a brown sound patch? Early Van Halen? Would love to see the process.
Just got mine yesterday very happy so far, how do I create a blank user patch like you have at the start of the video? Do I have to manually delete the blocks or can it be done with one action?
You need to delete everything in a patch.
Once you've created an INIT patch, you can copy it as needed. The Tone Studio app can help with bulk operations. Some users create entirely blank set lists in Tone Studio for bulk INIT.
Great vid. Silly question but how do you create a blank patch?
cool
One thing I haven't seen anybody explaining is how to get a blank patch to edit a preset from scratch. Even when I initialize a patch, I still have to remove every effect individually - there has to be a better way to do this. Any tips, anyone?
I wish pedal demonstrators would list their signal chain in the description. I want to know how I’m hearing their results. Amp? Monitors? FRFR? I can usually find out somewhere in the comments cuz other folks have asked the same question but still….
Which model is it Seymour Duncan pickup?? Tnx
What humbucker do you have in this Stratocaster?
And what’s next? We’re living in a time that your looking for day 2!!!
Great video, can you pls tell me your opinion about sound and feel between QC and Boss Gx100? 🤘 I know you have blueguitar amp and you like more than QC
Can you make a video about “curnum” function and how to set it up and use it?
Can I ask, were u using a particular IR or was that just the 1 that is usually coupled with that amp. It all sounded amazing but its the IR rabbit hole that worries me a bit with these things.
It was the inbuilt one coupled with the amp.
@@TheStudioRats cheers m8. I bought 1 2day and followed what u did. I got close 2 getting yr tones so its an awesome start. Luv yr work
can it, delay/reverb get a parallel settings ?
Thanks mate! Fir
How do you get the blank preset?
For home use, do you run a multi-effect like this through studio monitors?
Yes
great vdo thank you. Studio monitor or FRFR for Boss GX-100? please recommend.
Studio monitors every day.
The only thing not mentioned is what you're playing through? Are you going direct into your mixer or is it going through an amp??
I have to ask where did you get the guitar lamp in the back?
That was a recent birthday present, I think their on Amazon
Is this a good and useful unit for bass as well?
How do u record , I need a sit up info
How does it sound in the room when you're listening through your monitors? Is it a good option for home use without an amp?
It sounds the same as you are hearing it in the video.
Had one for a few days but couldnt get it to sound good through my black spirit200 4CM, any suggestions
Did you turn the ir’s off?
@@TheStudioRats yes
Looks and sounds great. How would you compare this to the GT1000 Core? They're somewhat close in price (over here, GX-100: $600, GT1000 Core: $750), as opposed to the GT1000 or the Neural Quad Cortex.
I like the screen on this unit - seems like that is a pretty big benefit over the GT1000 core. What does the GT1000 Core do that this doesn't?
Not a great deal. 1000 has a stereo effects loop, 32 bit processing, more simultaneous effects. Possibly better for studio recording if absolute quality is important.
Personally I prefer the GX-100, the Gt1000 is great but I can program the GX-100 much quicker which leads to beating able to play guitar more.
How do you save that settings and store it to channel? Nobody explains how to save it.
Push write.
If you push down on the knobs when you turn, they increase/decrease in multiples of 10 instead of 1
My sound don't change whats wrong can someone pls tell me
Sir i did the same setting but sound remain as clean ...why
Eagerly waiting ur reply from india
Great instructional video! You really made the programming of the GX-100 simple & straightforward.
MY boring 'probably a cliché by now' default: throw a Tube Screamer in front - makes every crunchy amp tone "more gooder"! LOL 😆 🎸 🎶 👍
Is there a difference in adding your delay /reverb after the amp as apposed to before?
Yes it’s a massive difference, before you are distorting your reverb/ delay. After you are reverberating / delaying your distortion
@@TheStudioRats but if your running a clean “amp” with an overdrive effect in front of the amp.?
Wow very nice overdrive tone,I am interested
Sir I requested to you clean twin patch like gr55 ..do a video boss gx100..
But are amps as good as helix? Does seem like good solid construction and some good routing options but does it feel as good as other modellers loke helix or axe or qc?
You should see Paul’s previous video on the GX-100. He addresses exactly the “feel” and states that it is way better than the other units that he’s tried - including the QC. Best regards
I didn’t like the Helix when I owned one, but its all personal preference.
@@TheStudioRats I wonder... Did you make sure that input levels on Helix were set correctly? It's really fussy about input levels and if it's set too high all amps feel flat and too compressed just like in physical units. Helix presets suck but with a bit of tweaking you can get absurdly close to analog gear
Soundwise which do you prefer for live use? Your Fractal Axe FX3 or Boss GX100?
I have a Fractal FM9 and I’m thinking if i should sell it for this.
The Gx is great but I prefer the Axe fx
@@IshredGuitar I love the way you asked a question but don’t expect an answer… (lol) ;-(
What hum buckers are in that strat it’s so good
Suhr Thornbucker
@@TheStudioRats thank you very much
Rats,
Can u you do a video on the Boss GX 100 using MIDI to Switch amp channels on a MIDI capable AMP ..Am using the MESA Triple Crown Head.
Thanks \../
