Boss GX-100 - Is It Any Good In The Studio?

  • In this video, I replace the guitar parts on a recent The Studio Rats song (Drifting In The Dark) that was originally recorded with a Matchless Independence 35, with guitar parts using the new Boss GX-100.
This fully-featured guitar effects processor is certainly popular at the moment, but is it any good in the studio?
In this video, I'm using a Strat straight into the Boss GX-100 and taking the outputs of the GX-100 straight into my recording interface.
This video is sponsored by Boss, but the thoughts are my own.
link to the Boss GX-100 Page.
    www.boss.info/us/products/gx-...
Fusing advanced BOSS tone technologies into a sleek, ultra-modern hardware design, the inspiring GX-100 delivers top-level performance everywhere you play. Explore 23 AIRD amplifiers and over 150 effects derived from the flagship GT-1000, and craft great sounds in seconds with the intuitive color touch display. Up to 15 simultaneous effect blocks provide unlimited tone possibilities, coupled with deep real-time command via onboard footswitches, an expression pedal, and external control support.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Great demo! It's always humorous how guitar players pick every last thing apart with "tube" comparisons... but in the end, the listener has no idea how much you paid, or how boutique an expensive tube amp is, or where you recorded it, and on and on. We spend a lot of time and money impressing our hoi polloi selves on how good something sounds. Meanwhile, it's the song people relate to, as they have no idea that you just turned on a flanger in a special section of the song. :) Sounded great with the amp, sounded great with the GX-100! I'd buy it, and my tube amps won't mind. It's great to make new sounds, we already have the old tried and true sounds to fall back on whenever you need them. Great song!

Cheers Paul! I subscribed recently because you really do a great job of presenting new products. Last year I bought a Line 6 Pod Go . It's just not doing it for for me. So much so that I went back to my old Boss GT-8 which (I.M.H.O.) sounds better. This GX-100 seems to be a greatly improved and modernized version of the GT-8. I work a single most of the time with tracks. So, as it's time to upgrade, this seems to be my best option. I recently used my GT-8 at a band gig running into the fx return on my amp and it sounded really great. So I'm very sure the GX-100 will be even better after watching this video. I also got a leg up on how to use it. Thank you for all you do. BTW you're a great player.

Firstly how does the gx100 responds to the guitar volume control,I have a treble bleed in my guitar that functions excellently with my analog rig, will it be the same with gx 100? Secondly could you suggest any monitors that work great with gx100 and that will colour our tone the least. What are you using for this output we are hearing? Thank you for your time and effort!

This is how a real demo is done - a concrete example with a song in need of a clean but something crunchy Fender amp/guitar sound. So again you get a clear and concrete step-by-step explanation of the process of recording with the device in question. All parameters, alternatives, and decisions are explained and presented visually, orally, and in audio for your convenience. So now after this clip you, as an attentive viewer, should have no problems getting eg. Keith Richard's Guitar sound in "Start Me Up" or in Jimmy Hendrix's "Little Wing" etc. Now it is only a matter of will for those who own this product to experiment and find their own combination of amplifiers, effects, etc.

I got one lately, trying to figure out if i have to use a dibox with this for live use? What would you recommend for a stereo connection with gx100 for live gigs? I watched a review where the guy said he uses balanced cables and goes direct to PA without a dibox, but boss doesn't mention if the outputs are balanced or not. Pretty darn close to the real thing. To my ears, I noticed that (very, very subtle) the real amp recording provided more clarity and space as if the gtr was better placed in the mix. I'm not sure whether you could tweak the reverb/eq or the parallel processing (as Sheps likes to do in his mixes) to compensate. But very impressive. Very impressive. The sound was very close to the matchless, though to my ear the matchless had a slightly less pristine string articulation which made breakup of the lower-mid frequencies sound a little more warm and rounded which I do like. Both versions sounds fantastic, would be hard pressed to say one was better than the other, just different. It seemee to me that initially you were using the touch screen a lot, but as you got into it you were editing more with the physical controls. I know there's a lot of criticism of the worl flow on the gt1000 models, it didn't take me long to really get to grips with the unit and know exactly where anything i might want to access is, quickly and efficiently. Hi, Paul. I have to say, the GX-100 did sound quite good. I closed my eyes on the first play through to see if I could tell the difference. It was quite apparent, but still you got the GX sounding pretty good. There's definitely warmth and that small amound of sag in the Matchless that gives it that lovely tone. I'd be buying this for the effects, like the reverbs and modulations as I'm in the process of paying off a Peavey Invective. How would you say the tape echo sounds?. Also What's the DSP like and could you run a delay, into a reverb, then back into another delay in the chain?.

I've been coin tossing for a while between Line 6 HX (second hand), Line 6 POD GO and the GX-100. I also just watched a demo on Andertons TV, and was leaning to the GX, but your video has pushed me right there 100%. The ability as well to use the C1 button to switch between two different amp/cab setups is immense, and as I play mostly PF covers, the ability to switch from a standard (Hi-Watt-like) DG tone to a Leslie Rotary-like cab on the fly would just make such a difference (think Comfortably Numb solos 1 and 2 for example). Thanks for making my mind up, and I have liked and subscribed. The track you used in the video sounds great too.

Hi Paul, another question, probably stupid. But before that, I did get the GX-100, and really like it so far, and your videos were one of the big reasons. So, thanks! Just wondering though - while recording from the line outs to an audio interface, does the sample rate matter. The GX-100 has a sample rate of 48 kHz, so should I set the interface and DAW to to 48 kHz or is the line out sending an audio / wav signal in which case it doesn't matter, and I can set the interface / DAW at any sample rate I like. Thanks in advance!

How was the recording set up? Did you use GX as an audio interface or did you run it through another audio interface?

Great demo! I would like your advice on weather this GX-100 or the Boss IR 200 would be better for going direct to a PA. Thanks

They’re really as good as each other in that respect. It all depends if you need the extra fx from the GX. If it were me I’d grab the GX-100

Hey Paul, thanks to you and your demos, I decided to purchase the GX-100 and traded in my GT-100 and immediately felt the difference. My question is I have a 1992 Fender Strat Plus which has 3 Lace Sensor Gold pickups with a 5-way toggle. Not happy with the tone I'm getting out of them. I love the guitar but really want to change the pickups. Any suggestions on what way to go? I really like the quietness of the Lace Sensors, but the tone is just not doing it for me since I've gone solely with the multi effects units direct into the sound board with the Praise & Worship team at Church. Sorry for the long reply. Any advice would be awesome. I absolutely love you tone & playing style. Thanks

Hi Kc. I find the same with all “noiseless pickups” personally I don’t mind a bit of noise especially if you have a noise gate in your unit you won’t even notice it. I like 50s style pickups . Fender do Fat 50s and Seymour Duncan do a 50s set.

@@TheStudioRats Cool, thanks, what are your preference as far as humbuckers. I also would like to switch out the standard humbuckers that came on my PRS SE custom 24?

Interesting that you went for the “natural” amp. I always thought that was a totally transparent, almost “straight into the desk” type thing. Sounded great though! Super playing Paul.

Hi Paul, would you consider using the audio recorded directly from the Boss-to-interface on an actual album. Is it close enough perhaps? This was a very useful video thanks! Superb song too, ended up humming it :)

Hello friend, I would like to know if there is a possibility for you to make a video demonstrating a comparison between the reverbs of the GX-100 versus the Big Sky of Strymon, this is one of the factors that are making me wait to buy this pedal, great video! excellent quality!

I don't understand how he got stereo panning from the delay block when it was followed by a mono reverb block. Shouldn't the reverb have summed all the audio to one channel again? If someone could explain this to me, that'd be great! :)
