    I grew up on a farm with a windmill outside my bedroom window and have the best memories of falling asleep to that rhythmic squeak. I love windmills! Not an envious person by nature but I sure do admire this mill and can't wait to watch the remainder of the series. Thank you!

    Worked at Aermotor for about a year. Guy Marrow was a good boss. They have better bearings than Babbit that can be retrofit and last a whole lot longer. Great machine if they are taken care of.

    Adam 79 said to give you a try. Glad he did. You like to take things apart and then get them to work, sounds like me. Hope to see more from you.

    Jim, I am here because I was sent by Abom79. I was surprised to see you working on and Aermotor windmill. If you have any questions about it (you seemed to be very knowledgeable about it) feel free to ask. I have over 30 years experience with that brand of windmill and water pumping systems. I look forward to seeing the re-assembly.

      +B Rykard WELL, where were you the last nine months I've been working on this thing? I certainly would have picked your brain! LOL There isn't a lot of good info out there. I literally just had to figure out how to rebuild it by taking it apart and using my experience with machinery. I LOVE the simple design. I need a pump. One of my next projects is to build a water tower 25-30' and pump water to it. That is when finances allow. I would like a more modern pump without leathers that need to be replaced. I looked at the simple pump, but they must coat the inside with 24k gold. Thanks for watching and please feel free to chime in when I screw up (or do something right). I could find no one local who had any experience with Aremotors, so it was adlib.

      Have you put it back together? There are a few KEY things you have to do to keep it from destroying itself once you have rebuilt it. Most folks just pump and gravity feed into a storage tank on the ground. You do not gain much by elevating the tower. If you do make a tower, remember water weighs roughly 8lbs per gallon. A small storage tank (1000gal) will weigh 8000lbs. Some folks use a 1-7/8" travelling valve inside 2" pvc pipe for a pump if it is not very deep. How deep are you planning on pumping. Even modern pumps still use leathers. Try this web site www.thewindengine702.com. It is a website where I sell "clones" of the Aermotor that was made between 1933 through 1980. There is some info there on pumps and sizing a mill to a well. I hope you find it useful.

      +B Rykard , I want to put around 500 gallons in a tank about 30' in the air. That should give me around 18psi in the house when you add the elevation of the terrain. It's not much, but it will wash hands, flush toilets, etc. I also want to use it to drip irrigate a small garden. We live way in the country, the last ones to get power restored. The simple pumps use Teflon seals instead of leather. I was hoping to find something out there similar with less cost. Please advise what KEY things I should have done. No problems so far, but she is not pushing a pump yet. I will check out the wind engine site. Thanks!

      The most important thing you need to do when you rebuild an Aermotor windmill is to replace part number 520. It is the oil collector that you unscrewed from under the hub after removing the pipe plug from the hub. It has a very important job. It scrapes the oil from off the inside of the hub and if all the ports and channels are clean, returns the oil back to the gear case. If you put the old one back in and put a new 730 bearing in, the 520 will be too short, not scrape any oil and all your oil will run out the back of the hub. If you leave it out, same thing will happen. You should screw the 520 in and try to turn the hub. If it cannot go passed the 520, take it out, grind it down and try it again until it will start passed the 520. Once you can make a full revolution with the hub and the 520 is scraping the inside of the hub, you are good to go. Also, remember to use 10wt non detergent oil in an Aermotor windmill. Yours uses 2 quarts. The oiling system is a gravity flow system.

      +B Rykard I'll say it again, where were you 9 months ago? LOL. I figured out how all that worked the old fashioned way, I took it apart..... Believe it or not, I only had to replace one part in the gear box; the shaft for the plunger guide. All the bearings looked good, every thing was good and tight. I could have probably used a set of the connecting rods, but I can replace those while it's on the tower. As far as the family that I purchased it from knows the gear box has not been down since '40 (no one is left alive in the family that was living there then). The nose babbit (no.730?) still looked good, very little wear or play. I played with what I dubbed "the oil scraper" (No.520) and I couldn't even back it out 1/8 of a turn without locking up the hub. It's been turning in the wind with no load and It hasn't started leaking yet. Hopefully all stays well. As far as oil goes I used 303 tractor fluid. It is around a 10wt oil. NAPA checked and said it was close to the same. 10wt non detergent oil is hard to find (without buying 5 gallons). Thanks again for the info

    Jim.Facinating stuff. Had an Aermotor in the family,some years ago. Sadly no more. Can find no info. about these Windpumps in the U.K.
    Know of some here in Somerset that have been neglected for decades.Seems ironic now that green energy is the 'in thing'Looking forward to your next episode.

    It would have been nice to see what holds the Hub on(How the shaft is secured to the housing) and to see how the Windmill is removed from the tower. What "bolt" has to be taken loose.

    Hi enjoyed your videos and I have a very noisy old aermotor That I have decided to rebuild . I have a crane service available to pick up the motor but I can't climb up on the tower after a stroke. What size pipe should I use for the stand? Also do you know of any mods to make it run quieter?

    I have a vintage windmill on my farm. The connecting rod to the pump has broken. Replaced with a cable. Now that has twisted extremely tight. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

    my family put up windmills all across north Texas, H.E. Turbeville, several generations of water well drillers, all gone now. to this day i find deely painful the sight if a windmill turning and turning with no sucker rod connected.......waste of good wind.

    Hi thanks for your you tube posts. What size pipe did you use to make your stand? Can you lift it by the long u shaped part under the sheet metal cover? Thanks for any help you can give me in advance.

    • @DoRiteFabrication
      @DoRiteFabrication  7 років тому

      William Miller I honestly don't remember the pipe size. It was pipe, and not tubing that I used. Just scrap pieces. I actually filmed making the stand for an entire episode, but the files got so corrupted that I couldn't really do anything with them. Yes you can lift the assembled gearbox and wheel by the guide hoop. That's how they place it on top of the tower when they use a crane. Thanks for watching.
