  • Special guests Shane and Lori with S&L Windmill Service here at the Homestead to fix some water pumping issues on my windmill.
Today we replace the leathers and move the pipe's weep hole for better water production. PLEASE check out Shane and Lori on Facebook at S&L Windmill Service and on UA-cam ‪@OkieWindmiller‬ . They don't have any videos uploaded yet but will sometime soon hopefully!
I apologize in advance for the wind noise, I was unprepared and my mics were not charged!!

It’s a good thing you found a reliable mom and pop company to fix your pump. They worked well together. It was a joy to watch.

Hi, Im Jim Day. I watch you and Lori pretty much every day Love your mechanic abilities! Why don't you try a lightweight tool belt? you could carry small items with you when you are up on a windmill-pliers, nuts and bolts, cotter pins, side cutters, a can of spray lubecrater, and anything you can think of whatever you think of things you could think of -----------------???

Windmills are a big reason why I hate the wind. Central Nebraska - stuck up on those things when they are greasy as hell. The brakes barely work so the wind blows and moves it anyway. The platforms are dilapidated so you're standing on pegs while trying to change the pitman rod. Dad sent me out on my first solo project to a windmill. I was 120lbs wet and slinging wrenches to get a couple hundred feet of 1" or 1 1/4" iron pipe apart to replace the cylinder or leathers. I was struggling with breaker bars on the pipe wrenches.Thankfully that was all from the ground. Most of ours were cased. Generally lasted 7 years until we had to pull it again. Effin' wind always made it worse.

I’m not exactly sure what you are referring to….. I think the perforated pipe portion is on the well shaft, not necessarily on the pump

Sometimes we do if we are needing an extra foot valve, but most of the time no. I want stuff to go thru it instead of plugging up the holes. Good question!

I think you are referring to a sand point! It filters out the fine sand.

see if you can have some silicone or polyurethane ones made. or make them yourself. all you need is a mold (3D print?) and a 2 part liquid. They will be way more chemical and wear resistant.

So, they make them!!! But, as with a lot of things, nothing beats good ole leather!! It swells and forms a very tight seal that can’t be beat. Also works well in a worn pump cylinder. Good question tho!!!!!!

Take the weight off of a plumbbob line, attach a small clamp on it then clamp it on your tape measure. then you won't need to use a tool for a weight, and it will always be there.
