I really like the video, I am a second generation water well contractor from eastern CO and work on several hundred operational windmills. Most everything you pointed out was spot on. If I may add a few things to the conversation.
The little gears should fit the shaft snug, the tighter the better really, then the key is a tapered key that wedges the gears tight as you drive it in through the hole on the back side of the shaft. As the head wears, the key will get loose and let the gears flop back and forth and give the head the knocking sound often heard on old mills. If you want it to last longer, you can loose the oiler and weld both little gears to the shaft. (More on this later) It takes more to rebuild cutting the shaft back apart, but the shafts usually are not re-usable anyway. Also welding the big gears as well helps keep wear consistent on all the gears. Most heads will wear out one little gear before the other as the loose key lets one flop more.
The oil scraper in the hub on the front end of the mill is open to the air around the casting on the back. This will eventually fill the oil scraper with dirt and not let it drain back into the shaft. Then any oil that comes down the shaft and makes it past the nose bushing ends up leaving the mill through the back of the fan hub. The spring loaded oiler on the shaft does it's job well, but the shafts get plenty of oil without it and don't make such a mess once the scraper gets plugged.
Lastly, the cross head shaft can be rolled half over once with no loss of any mill life. The coder pins on both ends hold the rotation so it won't roll back to where the previous wear was. The shaft is always being pulled on so the extra wear on the other side doesn't matter.

Just found a broke aermotor windmill on a military base that feeds their pond after watching this I really want to fix it now to talk the command into it.
...... great explanations and looks inside of that 100 yr old gearbox, something very special about how they engineered things back then...nothing but common sense and built to not wear out.......your doing a great job with that machine........

That was great. It actually matched the instructions I got when I was 8, 55yrs ago. And yes as an 8yrs old I climbed the towers and serviced 4 wind pumps.

I checked on one, probably an Aermoter, that was still turning yesterday after who knows long. Back in the 80s I put some gear oil in it, but I don't know what shape the bearing is in now.

Keith would be grinning and the oiling reminds me of when Brian was getting his HBM sorted out with the wicks and pipes running all over.
I'll stay tuned Jim. That was my point. For people not in the trades,that might look like a specialized piece.,But some of us just see things differently, and start laying things out in our heads while other people are searching the web. And how many people DON'T have pieces of cold roll laying around? :)-

Hi mate. I love those oiling systems that they had in those days. It often takes us a few moments to figure out what the hell they did. I have seen Doubleboost John, also a UA-camr, take apart a vacuum pump, and even he was not sure about a steel ring oiler-set-up that he came across. That although he knows a bit about old machines like that. Can't wait to see this wonderful mill go. Thanks mate. Marcel.

I have removed the small bolt in the nose, under the pipe plug in the wheel hub.
However, the shaft seems unwilling to slid out.
Can you add some detail on how to remove the shaft from the housing?

I saw a lot of those features on the 1930 babot bearing motors I worked on at my job. the motors floated and when setup correctly they would move horizontally about 3/16 of an in. and center and did not touch the sides. these GE 3 hp motor where huge and the size of a keg of beer. and the 10 hp and larger where 3 feet tall. Most were motors for air conditioning blower larger and slow rpm for quietness and long lasting. still going to this day. I have never seen the inside of a wind pump. I have an electric pump set up that works similarly that had wood rods that went down the shaft to the pump. The wood is long gone but the put still turns freely.
+Ed Ginsberg , The Aeromotor uses wood pump rods too. I'm not sure if I am going to keep the wood, or replace them with fiberglass.
Putting the rod on the stub-out closer to the center of the bull gears gives you less stroke but higher torque to lift the water from deeper wells.

Had a windmill on the farm and the storage tank on the hill above the house.. got my ass whipped for using the windmill blades as targets had to be able to hit the same blade while they where turning. Lol can you guess how many holes were in those blades and how many blades had holes. How can you have a good memory about getting your ass whipped, still brings up a chuckle. Of course your shared the rifle with your brothers, line The three of us up at the same time and thrash away and after Claim you got the worst of it.
Jim. Great video series. I have learned so much. I, too, am trying to restore an Aermotor 702. But I cannot get the old shaft to turn...much less get it off. I do not see anything in the shaft plug that looks like the Oiler on your video. I assume the Oiler has been removed. Any suggestions on how to get the shaft off. Thanks again.
your video is pretty good however was of no help. i had to order a new nose bearing. it is different than the original, and will not fit past the threaded oil socket. aermotor sent a new one (oil socket), but am struggling to remove and replace. any ideas?

You can buy new gears and bearings for Aermotor mills. Never use old wore out parts.
Have you ever saw a front pulley on a VW engine that slangs ALL oil right back into the ENGINE block really weird no front seals

I am making my first attempt to rebuild an aermotor I have it completely pulled apart but I can't get the small gears off the shaft do I need to heat them to get them off?
Possibly, mine took quite a bit of motivation. Remember if you add heat, that the bearing babbits melt at a relatively low temp.

Sure, but the problem is usually the linkage, It gets worn over time. The brake is just a steel band.

Why not put a electric clutch like all AC units carry on automobiles that would work on any windmill the tail compeller blade makes real sense

Landrew0 Sorry, It's not really a lesson on babbitted bearings, more or less want to let folks to know that the Aermotor has them. If you want to know more about babbitt bearings check out Keith Rukers channel, Vintage Machinery, or Keith Fenners channel, Turn Wright machine works. both guys are amazing and cover extensively, melting out, Machining out new forms, pouring new Babbitt, and fitting the Babbitt.
