This is a great example of why car engineers should be forced into working on cars for at least 2yrs before being allowed to design cars….the placement of 4 bolt’s directly above the subframe is pretty ridiculous. Great video, used this on a 2006 4 cylinder. Didn’t raise the motor, struggled with 4 specific bolts, didn’t plan an using RTV until I saw how difficult it would have been to align a moving gasket with so many bolts. Now I get to do it all over again on my 2004 4 cyclinder.
For of us in the rust belt, there's lots of reports warning not to try to open that can of worms by trying to remove that pan. Those bolts will break off and for DIYers, that can mean a tow to a shop to get the bolts drilled out. A little car maintenance will turn into a big bill. For them, they might just want to do a "spill and fill" of the fluid, leaving the pan in place.

And not clean the pan and magnets?
You can't know if the trans is gone without removing the pan. If you remove the pan and it's filled with shavings the trans is shot. If it's not then you can move forward with repairs. My advice would be to soak it with pb blast twice and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Michigan born and raised. Rust is a way of life up here

Followed all your tips and just got it done in the driveway - took about 3 hours. One thing I did learned from another video was measure the amount of oil that drained, and replaced with roughly the same amount. In my case I had to put back 6 quarts.
I have to say that after many bad experiences working after others have added RTV to gaskets... specifically getting those RTV'd gaskets off the parts without marring the parts... I can't say I agree with your mentor, and definitely don't advocate such. The pan and transmission were designed without it. If it's gonna leak, the pan needs replacement anyway. True of any part where the gasket is the only thing sealing the parts. You wouldn't do it for an O-ring, don't do it for the pan gasket. Maybe a teensy bit of that gasket glue, but even then... no glue is best glue for non-glued gasket situations.
Of course, that's my opinion after my own experiences. Keep on makin' videos, sir, much enjoying watching you do what you do!

Torque spec:
- drain plug 50Nm
- filter bolts 11Nm
- oil pan bolts 8Nm
- sealant for oil pan bolts only is three bond 2430 or equivalent
- normally there are 3 magnets inside and location is specified in the factory manual.

Great tutorial. Just picked up a 2007 with 163K miles from a cousin (original owner) but don't think the transmission fluid has ever been replaced, nor the filter. Was driven very easy, never towed anything, and both the transmission, and engine (4 cyl) run very smooth. It need tires, so I'll do this job myself and apply the savings towards a new set of tires.

Torques: Filter bolts 96 in lb, pan bolts 66 in lb, drain bolt 30 ft lb. Use offset wrench to remove 2 tight space corner bolts without lift the engine. Toyota OEM gasket is cork rubber so don’t use adhesive onto it.
Could Toyota have used cork for cost savings so it would be better to use a rubber gaskets? Of is cork better?
@@eaglerider94 It is not pure cork gasket. Instead, it is cork blend into rubber.
Great video thanks. I ended up loosening the nut for the transmission mount that is behind the left front tire to get a little bit more lift in order to access the bolts above the engine cradle.
I would highly recommend that if you are doing this on a vehicle that doesn't have a drain plug that you try to order an aftermarket pan that does before you do this job and replace the factory piece.

The jacking of engine is the key! I raised it about 10mm then those six hidden bolts are workable. Putting back is much easier than off.

After reviewing comments I'm kind scared to try this...first no garage, second lifting engine looks like you need proper tools and nice flat floor, and third yikes if you break bolts. Im willing to try just drain and refill...thank you for video

First stuff you never put the ATV on the surface going from the middle fan to the aluminum because that has to be clean the next time somebody Services it and it's really hard to do open the car and that gasket is intended to work without any sealer on it I would just put maybe a couple of dots around on the pan side that's easily clean them Avenged in order to locate the gasket and let it sit for an hour before trying to install the pan number to I always measure the amount of fluid I taken out so I can get the basic amount back in there cuz the court low could easily cost you a transmission
Is it necessary to replace the filter even at high mileage? My dealer said they don't replace the filter
When you access to the valve body of the transmission I would retorque the valve body bolts.
My Toyota highlander 2005 transmission doesn't picked on time while engage on drive especially when the car have not be drive that day but pick after some moment.
Some of these are so hard to read transmission levels on the dip stick. I had to just go buy what the service manual amount said on my 2002 Sienna. I could read the dipstick level on my 99 Lexus ES300 though.

Great Video thank you!!!!!!!! planning on tackling....if a shift solonoid fails how do you know which one without replaceing all of them? A code comes up P0770 shift soloniod. Been driving doesnt hit overdrive, every complete stop have to clear codes again and it will shift no problem. thanks for video helps a lot !!

You absolutely can. I usually replace the filter every other time. No issues. Some wear you must so it depends on the car

I loosened the valve body too. Aside from increasing the total fluid changed, is there anything else i need to do when refilling it?
Just noticed the dip stick in this 01 highlander v6 is completely different then mine for instance mine has four cut out chevrons two for cold level and two for the hot level, also has a 45° bend at the tip. Is it because my kluger was made in Japan?

What would cause a jerking and not shifting properly on a 2001 Toyota Highlander?
I just did a drain and fill on my 2007 Highlander this weekend. Everything went well. I drained approximately Four quarts and put Four quarts back in. From my best evaluation of the dipstick in the cold condition I look like I am quite a bit low on transmission fluid. I am confused because the owners manual specs said the transmission fluid was only like 3.8 Quarts? Is anyone else having this same conflict? By the way I know everything is sealed up I bought a new Crush Washer torqued it down and had a piece of cardboard underneath and nothing is leaking.
Mr Mike as transmission oil heats it expanses you check oil levels once the car gets at full operational temperature 170 to 180 degrees then you check dip stick and now you I'll have a perfect oil level check.
Where is the torque converter clutch solenoid located on the first gen highlander?

My Highlander 2001, I drove over a small bush near my driveway and it will only move in reverse and will not drive forward or go into park. Someone told me it might be the linkage got knocked off or out of place. I was wondering how much it would cost to get repaired and if you have a video showing it. Would everything be the same for a front wheel drive toyota highlander v6?
99.9% confident yes, it's the same. Reason being I've been prepping to do an AWD conversion and there is no difference in pan location or subframe mounting between the u151e (2wd) and u151f (AWD). The only difference is on the RH drive axle since that's where a center differential is added into the transaxle and an external "transfer case" is bolted on in between the transaxle and RH drive axle...all of which does not affect doing the service shown here.
Question, can the brace be removed blocking access to the bolts on the drivers side instead on using a screw jack ?

$400 job for a 2007 toyota highlander? In 2024? That's a lot. What happens if a mechanic puts more than 6 quarts of transmission fluid?
