  • My last video drew out tons of anger and asinine comments and opinions. I am addressing those flawed and disingenuous arguments in this video. As I said before: DO NOT BUY A CHIBSON. They are destroying the guitar market and flooding the secondary market with illegal counterfeits! Buy something else, like an Epiphone, IYV, Westcreek, etc. There is zero place in the guitar world for illegal, fake, charlatan, imposter, imitation, lesser counterfeit guitars.

My father was a gigging guitarist who was fond of Gibson guitars. Thanks to him, I own two Gibsons today. One, a '70 Gibson J-40 acoustic he bought me for my 16th birthday, and his '69-'70 Gibson SG Standard, which I inherited after he died. I'm 70 now.
But the reason I got back into guitars about ten years ago, was because my VA shrink suggested I get a hobby. So, guitars it was. I have 12 guitars. All except the Gibsons are modded one way or another. Four are total partscasters because I built and repaired things for a living and need to work with my hands. It helps keep what brain cells I have left working. Four are affordable Squiers. Two identical '04 hardtail Bullet Strats I drilled out and made string thru body, one '14 Bullet Strat/trem w/P90's, one '05 Squier Standard Strat.
The 50+ year old Gibsons needed major repairs/restoration. The acoustic had to go to a skilled luthier to have the top removed and several broken braces replaced. The SG has 50 years of natural wear down to the wood in some places. I did the restoration. New/vintage Kluson tuning machines, bone nut, new long travel brass bridge and some spot leveling and polishing the frets. Oh, and I had to glue down most of the fretboard inlays. SG's don't work well for me and I rarely take the acoustic out of its case. I do like to take them out and feel my Father's Spirit from time to time.
It seems my favorite guitars, to play, are the partscasters. I put more into these than all the others. They are like my babies. Working on these guitars helps my PTSD.
Regards to all here at Jake's place...

People should be arrested for selling a Chibson. The quality of the guitar is not the issue. Misrepresentation is a crime. You can't pretend to be selling something that you are not.

The problem is that when the original buyer sells it to an unsuspecting buyer! Not everyone knows how to tell the difference. I have an Agile from Rondo music that is pretty well built, but it's NOT a GIBSON! I like the guitar a lot, but still wish it was a Gibson!

What baffles me are the people who trash Gibson yet buy a Chibson with the Gibson logo on the headstock. If you hate Gibson so much, why buy anything with the logo? There’s thousands of singles cuts by other companies that cost the same as a Chibson and play a 100 times better.

As somebody who only knows about Fender Strats, I don't think I would be able to tell a fake unless it played really bad or was obvious. But it is straight up bad practice to put Gibson on the headstock. Many companies make les pauls, but under their own brand. Chibsons are a fake and thats not cool at all.

My father was overweight and only knew 3 chords - he played a gibson. Years later he bought a PRS and said that was the best guitar he'd ever played his 3 chords on after watching a review where Lee from Andertons played 2 of the 3 chords. Thanks to them both I own something else and learned to play it.

    Great commentary.
I've never seen this channel before, but I think I agree 100%.
I personally own 2 Gibsons, right now. One is a Gary Clark Jr. SG, and it sucks. There's nothing "wrong" with it, but it won't stay in tune, and is sounds like crap, and it gets crazy static buildup if you play it. It's my greatest regret in guitar buying. I also own a pretty standard Les Paul. It is, as you say, perfectly adequate. It sounds great, plays well, and looks cool.
I say all of this to illustrate that I have no love for Gibson.
That said, I've owned three Chinese knockoffs of Fenders. They were crap. I'm an excellent tech, and put in the time and money to upgrade/repair everything wrong with them, and they were still crap. They felt cheap, the woods were awful, they weren't dimensionally correct. One just couldn't be intonated because the bridge was misplaced.
Squiers are 100% better made than the Chinese knockoffs. People who say that their Chibsons are "as good or better than a Gibson" are just wrong. I'm a a huge fan of buying a low-end guitar and turning it to a monster player. This can't be done with the Chibsons that I've handled. The necks and the wood aren't worth the time, IMO.
As you said, go buy a reputable cheap guitar, and upgrade that. You'll be 100% happier. I premise.

I am a Gibson fan boy and now currently own around 29 of them. I've never owned any duds but then again, I was able to play most in person. Even the ones I got off of Reverb still feel and sound great. Of course my love for the particular brand actually has nothing to do with the company itself, but for 2 reasons: 1. my guitar idols of my youth mostly played them, minus a few. Then I found out that Dave Gilmour actually played a Les Paul gold top in ABitW's solos. 2. Orville Gibson is buried in my hometown.

Yea, I do agree with you, Jake. Selling an inferior product, bootlegged with another company Logo is unethical and I think there are laws against selling these in the USA.
On the lead content, I saw another video where the guy swabbed several of these guitars and found traces of lead all over the guitars. Not just the frets...

I have bought a few but only to challenge my tech skills. Remove everything down to the body even the frets. Redo it all new the way I decide to spec it out for that guitar. Make it play like glass and sound like a singing bird then stamp replica on the back and hang it on my rack. I grew up watching my favorite guitarist play a fake Gibson in guns and roses and he is why I even got into guitars. So??

Yeah, it's really pointless to buy a Chibson just to replace all the parts with Gibson parts. To put some balance in to this. There seems to be quite many old rock guitarists that will remember 1950-60:s era Les Pauls as only one of ten where as good! But remember those guys played/plays Heavy Rock/Metal some Les Pauls where up to it most where not.
Les Paul was not as created with that style in mind!
There is almost always some work to do in turning an Les Paul into an low action Rocker blasting away screamin solos from the hip with an ease.
My grandpa played Jazz, Blues and Folk and that I knew also other players in that cirkle and they all praised Gibson!
But as we all understand that Metal got the grip. Them guys are all over Chibsons and there are some reason to it!
Cheap and cool guitars as good even better than most as it works for them.

I can walk onstage with it and hold my head up high! That instrument has been through the ringer as have I so we are a good match. Don't buy a Chibson there really is no point. I think this video could be better titled "Why Chibson Guitars are Unethical" because this was less an indictment of instrument quality than the ethics of using the Gibson brand name/head stock. I'm curious how you feel about brands like Burny or Japanese builders like Grassroots that copy Gibson guitars but don't use the Gibson logo? What about PRS making something identical to a Stratocaster body? I agree with you that using the logo is unethical/illegal but as long as they started removing the brand name or buyers do it themselves would they still be considered an "illegal" guitar or could they be reviewed on their merits as an instrument at that point?

Back in the 70s a lot of Japanese companies were producing similar guitars, a lot even outright putting Gibson/Fender logos on the headstock. There was a big lawsuit about it, but the main thing was that the body shape and style weren’t the issue of counterfeit, but the use of their logos on their headstocks.

Thought provoking video, for sure. I'm not sure I buy into the notion that it's "unethical" or "immoral" to own a Chibson. Chibsons pose no threat to Gibson or the used Gibson market. I think a lot of people who buy Chibsons do so with their eyes wide open hoping that they can get something that looks like an actual Gibson and hopefully plays like one, as well, without having to drop thousands of dollars (some because they can't afford it and other because they aren't willing to shell out what Gibson is asking these days). Some Chibsons are great and some aren't. Depends on who you get them from. I have several, and at least a couple of them are among my best playing and sounding guitars. Fit and finish are great, materials are great, and QC seems to be very good. Beyond that, I don't find the need to decide whether they're "better" or "worse" than a real Gibson - which I find pointless. Gibsons are universally excellent guitar made with the best materials - some Chibsons are, as well, but at $300 they just aren't going to be on Gibson's level in terms of materials. Workmanship is another story. Would I ever represent one of my Chibsons as a real Gibson or sell it as such (or sell them at all)? Absolutely not. I bought mine out of curiosity and to practice my luthiery skills, something I would never do on a real Gibson. If I asked you whether it was unethical for Gibson (and now Epiphone) to grossly inflate the prices on their guitars based on marketing them as "iconic" and turning the sale of high-end guitars into a marketing exercise the way they have, I would guess you would say that's just the market. If there's a market for $12,000 Murphy Lab '59 copies (Gibson copying their own guitar, complete with fake aging, but the way), then so be it. I think the whole Chibson thing is exactly the same - there's a demand and the Chinese are filling it - and quite frankly, they're doing a pretty darn good job of it these days. I guess whether someone is willing to live with the ethical implications of Chibsons somehow hurting the market for Gibsons is up to them. I'm not sure anyone complains about Kris Derrig or accuses Slash of being unethical for making and playing a Gibson knock-off. Now, if you're talking about people going out and trying to sell Chibsons as real Gibsons at real Gibson prices, that's unethical and anyone who does that is a POS. The good news is that there are several simple ways to identify a fake versus a real Gibson (except for the completely uninitiated). Sorry for the novel, but one final thing. Now that Epiphones have Gibson's open book headstock (yes, I know they're the same company, so it's perfectly legal), what would you think if Gibson decided to go one step further and put "Gibson" on Epiphones made in Asia? That's the niche Chibsons currently fill. I think they couldn't make them fast enough. Why? Because people want an affordable Gibson - and that's exactly why Chibsons exist.

Lp and strats are very consistent quality and cheaper to buy than at any time in history. They have been about 1000-2000 for FORTY YEARS.
Just say ur so poore you can't afford a cheap hobby like guitars.

this is ridiculous. you begin the video saying you hate bias but you're obviously biased against chibsons. some suck yes but some are decent for the money. no they're not better than real gibsons, and no gibsons don't suck, in fact they are great, but they are overpriced due to name recognition and that's ridiculous, are we going to defend Balenciaga's garbage bag now? chibsons don't cost 2.5k a piece. even with an upgraded hardware, and no even with an upgrade on hardware they will still not sound like gibsons but again, price is still way lower. as for ethics i could not give less of a flying fuck about it, if they don't want people flocking to cheaper markets then lower the damn prices, or just sell to the super rich (which btw is the marketing strategy they chose) so this is just colateral for their decision.

I think Gibson's marketing strategy is to sell to gigging musicians. Once you get to the point where your skill level is like Jakes, you want a nice guitar to play on stage. I have been around Gibsons all my life. My Father was a Gibson fan. He had mostly hollow bodied guitars. He was a gigging musician. I have his SG. I don't know why but they just don't work for me. Strat shaped guitars work better for me.
I would love to have a nice Gibson LP. I don't know if I would play it much though. But then again, Jake has no problem playing his "Annihilator" on stage. I think a good guitarist like Jake could make almost anything sound good. An experienced guitarist can also hear and feel the difference between guitars. So, I'll take Jake's word for it.
In the end, I'm just here for the music...

@@johnbrady1211 I think their marketing strategy is more of a finance decision. it's easier to make fewer guitars and sell them at a higher price than to make more guitars and sell them at a cheaper price. same strategy LV, Gucci, etc. use. i love gibson myself and i really don't see the point in getting a fake LP. but i'd be lying if i said chibsons are absolute crap because their not, they're 250usd guitars and they're a very great alternative for unobtainable guitars (eet fuk, etc.)

My Chibson Les Paul is great. Better than the real thing.
Hands down beats my turd of an Gibson SG too.
Also it's China's way of showing the true cost of capitalism.

Idk man I am an exception I guess I like the LP atyle guitars but I don't make a living playing guitar, I am just a bedroom player, so I'm not throwing 3 grand at a "real Gibson". I will however spend a few hundred on a playable LP style guitar that I can play and enjoy and not stress over scratches, wear and tear, etc because it didnt cost me $3k
