The legendary story Pardah is written by the famous Indian author Yashpal . It is taken from the novel 'tark ki toophan' . It is a story that is still in relevance to today's society .
Chaudhari Peerbaksh , is the head of a large lower middle- class family . His forefathers were relatively well to-do through the Choudari's immediate family has to survive with his meager salary of 18 rupees as a low paid clerk in an oil moll . This was not enough to take care of his ever growing family of an old grandmother , the couple and their five children .
They stayed in a rented house in a run down working class locality with cobblers , washermen and labourers as neighbours . Choudhari is respected in his neighbourhood because of his white collared job . But the reason why the society didn't budge about this , even with his pathetic living conditions , was because of a 'parda' at the entrance of his house The parda protected the dignity of their household , both literally and figuratively .
His employer loathed to give him loans and consequently he took recourse to the Pathan money lender . With decreasing salary and Choudari weren't able to pay them back , Pathan makes a big ruckus one day and reaches his house . The Choudari pleads for helplessness . But thanks to the Parda which was hung at the entrance , Pathan believes that Choudari was hiding his assets inside his house
Finally in absolute fury , Pathan throws the Parda away which exposes all the near naked members of the household who only had this single piece of cloth , the Parda to take care of their modesty .
Shocked by what he witnessed , the Pathan walked away in shame while the Chaudhari sitting in abject humiliation with no motivation to reinstall the Parda as he stood realising that this parda which concealed the households penury had no purpose left to serve anymore
Through this story , the author tries to advice us that hiding away from reality is pointless . Lies and manipulation will always lose and will make you gain no respect in the long run but truth will . Hence we should never abstain from truth , honesty and principles in life
