  • Car journalist Henry Catchpole describes what it's like to drive the Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 hypercar with its astonishing Cosworth-built V12 engine. The 4-litre unit revs beyond 12,000rpm and produces 654bhp. Henry says it's like driving a 1990s Formula 1 car.
He joined Dan Prosser and Andrew Frankel on the podcast to discuss his world-exclusive comparison test of the T.50 and McLaren F1. Listen to the full episode (#218) wherever you get your podcasts or watch right here on The Intercooler's UA-cam channel.

It’s epic that Cosworth are delivering the greatest ICE at a time when engines are being driven out of our lives - what better way to sign of ICE than to have Cosworth leave not just one but several of the greatest engines as the legacy of this ice age .

I've been a big fan of the Aston Martin Valkyrie, and it's mighty engin ever since it was announced. And, the one thing this vehicle, the T50 and the Valkyries engine have in common, is the fact that they were both designed by Cosworth. The same company that built the most winning F1 engines in the world.

I compared torque and power between the F1 and T50, and once you take gearing into account, and vehicle weight, the T50 has more acceleration at any revs. Video here: watch?v=8AdVOuBQcLc

I have two Hondas that turn 8K. Hanging on to them for dear life. Very little out there with a similar displacement that is competition for either. Everyone else is pressing the clutch by the time they get to 6500 k. I could absolutely see this thing walking away from everything with a similar engine and power.

People are saying that they don't love everything about the car because some things could be better. The transmission, the engine sound, the torque curve, the top speed, the brakes, the cup-holders... Yep. True. Fine.
It wouldn't win many rounds in a game of 'Supercar Top Trumps', but so what? The point of creating a machine like this is not to make a 10-year-old's dream of the bestestestsest, powerful-est, Top-Fuellest, fastestestest car for ever and ever, nyah, nyah, nyah; the idea is that it's something unique for the connoisseur. It has character. It has quirks. And of course, it'll have weaknesses.
An owner would get to know it in much the same way that an experienced horseman would get to know a new mount. True, cars aren't alive, but to get the best out of something like this, you need to understand its foibles. I don't imagine many people are prepared to do that, these days. They expect push-button perfection (including tuning the exhaust note), preferably without having to actually push any nasty icky buttons.
Like other extreme vehicles, its strength and desirability lies in the fact that it's NOT just like everything else on the road. I've no idea how much 'driver aid' tech is on board, but I suspect that you can't run it from an app on your mobile phone. You can't engage 'Automatic' and let it do all the difficult stuff for you. You can't hit 'pro' mode and have multiple computers regulate the gear shifts and traction control to cover up your lack of talent every time you stamp on the throttle.
Or... if you CAN, I hope such a thing can be disabled at will.
I accept that not everybody wants their supercar to be hard work, but those aren't the people this thing's meant for. They should do what bored sheikhs and millionaire footballers do and buy a Bentley, a Ferrari, a Bugatti or a big Merc - something that can be tuned and programmed to look after them and flatter their abilities at the wheel.
This car needs understanding and taming before it'll let you drive it. It's not my cup of tea, but I find it quite refreshing.

In my opinion it’s massively overpriced and massively overrated. Heard it and saw it at Goodwood with my own eyes. Design wise it looks dated, like an unfinished mix and match of many different cars, it’s not pretty, it’s not elegant, beautiful, it’s not got any striking looks or beautiful lines, doesn’t really look like a supercar if I’m honest, it looks a bit bland and boring if anything. Yes it’s light, but so what! It’s a road car that’s obscenely expensive that’ll be barely used anyway. Give me a 812 C or f12 tdf, put a full novitec exhaust system on it and it will sound way better than a T50.any day of week. Will be better engineered, sound better, more powerful, look better, some extra weight means nothing unless your looking for lap times.
Sound wise, it actually sounds like one of them annoying mosquitos in your ear at night, the engine has no depth or soul. Proper v12 engines bark, growl, grunt, bellow, scream, whale and break the air as they pass bye, they do it all!! The T50 engine sounded bobbins to be honest at Goodwood, a very strange, overrated and soulless v12 sound. I was there at Goodwood trackside and saw it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. The engine was characterless. The V12 in the new Ferrari Daytona sounded much better, cleaner, crisper, sharper.
Paid for reviews mean jack sh-t! The Zonda sound made the T50 sound like it was from another planet.
Yes I’m sure “THERE ALL SOLD OUT” like every manufacturer says but for me I couldn’t justify that kind of money for that car, not jealous or bitter or envious I’m just being realistic of what I saw and heard at Goodwood. I’m sure it’s great to drive but so are many cars for a fraction of the cost.
