- In this video, Sam takes a look at the mini Keeley Katana Clean Boost pedal, check one out here: www.pmtonline....
The Mini Katana takes Robert Keeley’s oldest design, and one of his most popular pedals, and crams it into a mini stomp box , so you can squeeze it onto any pedalboard. A FET based clean booster, this tiny version of the much loved Katana offers up to 35db boost, giving your valve amp a real kick up the bum, which can really open up the dynamic characteristics of the tubes.
But the Katana mini isn’t just a super clean transparent boost pedal, it’s got a few other tricks up it’s sleeve too. Along with the bypass switch and output level knob, there’s also a couple of internal dip switches. Just like the boost switch on the full size Katana, the first dip switch ups kicks the pedal into high gain mode, adding a lovely warm FET based overdrive to the tone, which sounds great when combined with an amps natural overdrive. The second dip switch, which is new for the mini Katana, is a high cut, reducing treble frequencies slightly if you need to smooth out the tone of your Strat or Tele a little.
Specs-wise, there’s not really much else to say about this simple, but great sounding booster pedal. It’s built to Keeley’s usually high standards, and it probably is worth noting that, just like most of these mini pedals, there’s no room for a battery so you will need a 9 volt power supply. It annoys me that they put the additional switches inside.
I'm always surprised by people's defnititon of clean lol. Prob cause I'm more of a jazz guy. Thanks for posting
Right? Listen to this “clean boost” Immediately get dirty.
The dirt is not coming from the pedal. The pedal is overdriving the amp which is the source of the distortion you hear.
Debating getting one of these to boost my fender blues jr tweed for a nice clean kick in the butt
Did you do it? I have a BJ as well - tried the RC Booster V2 but it was too expensive for what it does, IMHO.
The overdrive boost sounds like shit
I got one and Dayum It's great!🕶🕶
Hi. I just bought my Mini Katana. But I'm having a problem putting it on my board. I replaced my old clean boost (Nux Lacerate) with Keeley Katana. But when I start playing, my clean tone was having a crank sound. It just annoys me. Coz I expect it to be a clean boost not an overdrive pedal.
Hope you could help me.
Back it off to say 9 o'clock and see how that sounds. That crank is probably your amp's preamp being pushed to distortion. Try guitar to katana to amp and then try it on various settings. Make sure when you do that, that the Keeley Katana is getting direct power, not from a daisy chain that's connected to other pedals at the same time. Issues can come through the DC power circuit from other pedals, particularly from digital pedals sharing power with analog pedals.
So while this is a guitar pedal, how would it fare being used for a bass?
I have one for my bass rig.
My advice:
Get the EP Booster instead.
Hey there Sam how does this compare yo a spark
I use this with amplitube 5 perfect level no clipping. Highly recommended. But my Chinese psu causes high whistle. Getting a better one from ebay in 3 days
Is this pedal buffered? Was think about putting it and the end of my pedal chain.
I don't like that there's switches inside it. What a nuisance
Awesome thanks
Hmm that could help i really need a high cut on my lead channel
Would have been great to see a high gain demo as well!
I just bought this and it adds overdrive when I turn it on... Is that normal? Supposed to be a clean boost I thought
Check the dip switches inside, maybe it's set to OD mode. Also if your amp is overdriving a little bit already it's not gonna add clean volume it'll just be more gain
It will only be clean if your amp is really clean
In the fx loop or after drive pedals, its clean. Put it before any drive, its gonna add gain
It’s actually adding drive because the amp is being pushed with it on.... I have other boost pedals on with it
Does your amp have an fx loop?
