  • Let's talk about why Metallica doesn't matter anymore. The new record 72 seasons isn't selling well, growth has been stuck at 24 million on spotify for months now. What do you expect in a world obsessed with cardi b and Nicki Manaj? You know what though? Nothing else matters to me than to spread the good news of metal to the masses. Which is why we'll be watching a live performance of Metallica's most popular track, Nothing Else Matters muhahaha!

    I understand that these negative, dramatic titles are just profitable clickbaits. That being said, for the sake of truth, let's be rational. For 2023 standards, the 72 Seasons album is selling very well. The vast majority of people, SPECIALLY METALHEADS, stopped buying music at all 15 years ago. I also understand that nostalgia is comfortable and cosy, but the 72 Seasons album is awesome.

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 6 місяців тому +3

      Yeah, I feel the same. All metal albums dont and never will sell the same like they did. Comparing and competing with sales in general from 20 or 30 years ago is just wrong. Calling 72S a flop in that sense isnt right. Its doing alright regarding sales, and everyone knows the songs either way with streaming. The new material works very well live and people are responding to it. I look forward to Room of Mirrors coming at us live.

    • @HeathenDance
      @HeathenDance 6 місяців тому +1

      @@kylereece1979 Correct. I have over 1000 metal albums, so, nostalgia is not something that affects me. It's either good, or it's not. In my opinion, the only thing missing in 72 Seasons is that typical power ballad and/or instrumental, that always fits well in a classic Metallica album. Sanitarium, One, Fade to Black, Ktulu, Orion. If you take those away, I put 72 Seasons above Kill'Em All and specially, above And Justice For All. But it's just my honest and subjective taste. To each his own. I love Justice just as any Metallica fan, but if you remove the fourth track, it becomes very repetitive. I don't think many people listen to albums from start to finish. They just do a mash-up of their favourite songs, and it gives them the impression that "I LOVE THIS ALBUM. IT'S GREAT." And on that regard, 72 Seasons has lots of variety, from start to finish.

    • @kylereece1979

      @@HeathenDance 72S was a serious grower. Jesus, it took about a week for it to slot in with me.😁 Today, Im still hearing things that, I missed initially. Ive a couple of faults with it overall, but I think its a damn good album. A definite Grower.👍
      The lack of a ballad and no real clean tone guitars rob some riches and range within the songs. That, and I do think Kirks soloing is too repetitive. All too familiar licks lash out, when some more creative ideas could really have given things more identity, separatism.
      I really liked Kirk's "Portals" EP, its got some awesome, exotic melodies and ideas. I think he should have applied more of that into 72S.
      Inemorata , Room of Mirrors and Too Far Gone have brilliant bursts of harmonized leadwork that, Id loved to have more on the other songs. But- those little things outta the way, I think 72S has pleanty in there to celebrate and will reap more rewards over time. 👍

    • @HeathenDance
      @HeathenDance 6 місяців тому +1

      @@kylereece1979 Agreed. Also regarding Kirk's "Portals." What a great piece of music it is. I also think the first track "72 Seasons" is their best opener since "Blackened." Also have a soft spot for "Crown of Barbed Wire."

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 6 місяців тому +1

      @@HeathenDance Portals really showcased a side of Kirk that, I feel isnt represented enough in Metallica. Ive seen interviews where he mentions that his leadwork these days is intentional. Phrases, licks, passages that sound like his 'signitures', or calling cards. He did a superb interview with Rick Beato lately about that.
      Yet, some sweet flutters of brilliance aside, I feel he overuses all that on 72S. Wah-Wah'ing his way thru' licks that, I have heard him Reload before. It makes the album sound like one long song on initial listens.
      Portals "The Maiden and the Monster" and "The Incantation" are stunning examples of what Id loved to have heard from him on 72S. "The Maiden..." is a broodiny cinematic story that evolves effortlessly into a triumphant Rock out finale with some of his tastiest soloing in ages. Its Awesome!! 🤘
      It would have been fascinating having that on 72S as an instrumental, or worked into a huge vocal led track.

  • @SpaceJockey805

    Kirk doesn’t know shit about “theory”. he’s mentioned it in interviews. He’s just self taught and figured out what worked. It’s great to know these things for sure, but it also strips away a little bit of the magic. I kind of regret taking a guitar theory course, because it basically just gave names and definitions to all of things that I already knew. Now I can’t unsee it and I feel that a little bit of my creativity was stripped away. Everyone’s different though, that same course probably worked wonders for other people

    • @TheAmbientMage
      @TheAmbientMage 6 місяців тому +2

      I went through that phase when I first learned theory. The real value of theory is having an arsenal of possible moves to make when you're playing, and especially when improvising. A general understanding of relative pitch and how to blend the tones together are where the magic really lies.

    • @Breakstuff5050
      @Breakstuff5050 6 місяців тому +1

      I tried learning by learning songs verbatim, felt great for years.
      But the moment I learned the blues scale I was shredding haaaard against whatever random chord progression I'd throw on the loop pedal. There was a time where it felt endless, licks for days, with slight modulations and random note substitutions.
      But I got too into theory and production and the lyrical side of things, no consistent guitar playing anymore or focused practice. Now I'm a jack of all trades and master of none. Which is absolutely fucking useless lmao

He does a buch of lead harmonies with Kirk in songs like One snd Fight Fire With Fire. He also playes the solos in a bunch of their cover songs like Whiskey in the Jar (Thin Lizzy) and Overkill (Mötorhead) for example. I don’t see a new Metallica. It sucks. It's not so much that metal is dying everything is. All forms of music have declined so much over the last 20-30 years to where on average everything just sucks now

    The classic stuff is best new stuff not bad but not that great. A bit off feel between metal and pop rock type stuff. Still better than Load.

    Everybody and their grandparents knows Nothing Else Matters. Even some Cardi B and Nicki Minaj junkies know that song. Metal in general doesn't matter. It never really did except to the posers and the real metalheads. The music industry has totally changed. There are only a handful of metal bands and even hip hop artists that are relevant anymore.

    Basically they’ve moved into their Legacy Band era. All their good, relevant, meaningful music is in their past and they are just doing a continuous nostalgia tour now. They cant write anything interesting now and they’re stuck with Lars. Lars just plain sucks and anything “new” they might write is entirely redundant. Plus Lars. And Kirk is redundant as well. Same stuff over and over. The Black Album was their last. It’s been steadily downhill since. Load was ok. Then just suck suck and suck. Plus Lars. F Lars. Lars is the definition of Weak Link. Lars is far more than just a douche. He’s the anchor around the band’s neck. There is legion of grade-school youtuber drummers that embarrass Lars. Be honest about that. Metallica is now on their never ending Play The Hits tour because redundant and F Lars. And that’s ok. They have that legendary 5-album catalog and, except for F Lars, we’re fine hearing nothing but that.

    They're literally on a world tour 💀 the world isn't NEARLY as obsessed with Cardi and Nicki as it was 5 years ago either. Shits getting boring and repetitive. Shit you've got country music topping the charts in 2023.

    I haven’t watched the video but I’m just gonna say it:
    Metallica sucks. They have in my opinion since the Justice Album. I’m a pure snob…I like the Cliff era and not much else. They were so fast, heavy and hungry back in the day. Then I think they got the spotlight and got lazy.
    When I compare Lars to other drummers, it’s insane to see how pathetic he is. His meter is terrible, and he rarely plays some of the cool fills he’s made over the years (for example the intro in Creeping Death).
    Kirk is absolutely embarrassing. Like many here I play guitar. I was influenced by him very early on. As my technique has improved and I’ve been influenced by other players (Vai, Yngwie, George Lynch, Randy, Jake E Lee etc), it’s amazing to me how little Kirk has grown as a player. Like yeah he’s got some really cool licks and solos here and there but all in all there’s just nothing special about his playing as of the last 35 years.
    Now some people might be like “WeLl ThEyRe RiChEr ThAn YoU”. Idc. Yes it’s a thing - sometimes people suck really bad at something and still make money. Success doesn’t mean you’re good at something. I’ll always love those first 3 Albums…they’re the peak of awesomeness. But after that to me the band just took the foot off the pedal

      Eh, a lot of Slayer albums start to blend together. South of Heaven was really the only album where you might listen to all the songs outside of an album listen. God Hates Us All is one of my favorite albums and I'm not blasting Payback unless I'm listening all the way through.

      Slayer's last good album was Seasons in the abyss. Actually most of the great bands from the 80s ran out of ideas around 92. The ones who weren't as good back then like Kreator, Sodom, Exodus or Testament got better and better as the years went by.

    metallica hasnt been good since they ran out of dave and cliffs material. which was.. and justice for all? from then on out its been dog shit central. enter sandman was pretty cool, and they had some pretty decent songs on the black album.. but it wasnt metallica. sounded like an album that was written by an engineer with metallica on the instruments. and then with load and reload.. we basically got the style of music james would have written had he not been influenced by dave and cliff. whenever james writes riffs, they just sound like motorhead. its more rock than thrash metal.
