  • This is the horrible clacking sound of a failing Timing Belt Hydraulic Tensioner in a Mitsubishi Endeavor with a 6G75 engine (V6 3.8L ci 3797cc MFI GAS SOHC). It will let you jump out of the drivers seat when you"ll first hear it. This clacking is usually present when the engine is started from a "cold start" and then disappears after 5 to 10 seconds as soon as the engine warms up. The clacking sound is not present when the car is started with a warm engine early on. It is always present on the very cold days than in the summer. This engine may be similar with: 2003 - Present Mitsubishi Pajero (aka Montero / Shogun), 2004- 2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor, 2004 - 2009 Mitsubishi Galant, 2005 - 2008 Mitsubishi 380, 2006 - 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse. 2005 - 2008 Mitsubishi 380. Other Vehicle brands that have Engines with a Timing Belt Hydraulic Tensioner (e.g. some Hyundai, Honda, Acura, Kia, etc.) may also present with this same horrible sign.

My tensioner is making this noise, but I'm halfway through the time till I need to replace it again. Can I just replace the tensioner without taking the whole thing apart? Or is that not advised?

@ Danny Fisher - If you want to replace just the Hydraulic Tensioner, you still have to do everything except maybe for the removal of the engine mount, engine support bracket, the generator tension pulley, the crankshaft position sensor and the timing belt.

@@nunkirider8738 would it only be removing the parts in the way? Or would it include resetting/turning the crack/cam shafts? Trying to gage if I want to do the replacement myself, or have it done at a shop. If it's just remove parts till I can remove the tensioner, I'll do it myself. If it involves moving/adjust the belt/crack/cam shaft, I'll pass the word on. Thanks.

@ Danny Fisher - Unfortunately, If you have to replace the hydraulic tensioner you have to do most of the procedures in replacing the timing belt (making marks of the TDC-Timing belt, removing the crankshaft pulley, torqueing the tensioner pulley, tensioning of the serpentine belts, and also be prepared to deal with a jumped right camshaft pulley… Watch my video ua-cam.com/video/SSt3X97gIy8/v-deo.html , this will give you the idea of the extent of work that you may have to do if you decide to D.I.Y.
