It makes me weep, its the song of a mother in the deep, impoverished south, wanting only the best for her son. Its a wisdom someone pours out only from the heart for someone they love and would give everything to lift up.
I was brought up with a single mom, she didn't have much to offer except good advice and unconditional love. I'm trying to live a good life everyday mom. I won't let you down. RiP 🙏
This always brings tears to my eyes - cause for introspection - the important things in life - not money and riches but love and relationships - family and friends - worship and awe for Almighty God.
I always told my kids I was not proud of them for what they achieved or accumulated but for the kind of persons they were. I was happy for them when they reached their goals in life and proud of them for being decent, kind, and loving people with integrity and ethics. This song hits home for me because it basically says everything I told them. I've raised two very decent and loving kids and it's the best achievement of my life.
My wife calls me her simple man. The first time she said that to me I took it like she was calling me dumb, but this definition was what she meant. It brought tears to my eyes. This is how I was brought up to be and for some one to see that comin out in me and say that for the first time was heart melting . Keep up the awesome site love this!
Ive played this for my son ever since i found out i was having a boy. I'd put the earphones on my belly. It was his bedtime song as a baby and still is he just turned 14 yesterday. It will play when he gets married as our Mother\ Son dance. And it will play at my funeral to remind him to always be a Simple Man

This song is a testament of the love of a mother that has been called home to heaven. The time that my momma passed away, I had to fly back to Dallas to lay her to rest and I was coming from her wake on a cold winter night in December. I sit back, close my eyes and listen to the lyrics that I wish someone would have SAID to me when I was a young man! Even though no one had a talk with me about stuff like this, I tried to live my life the best I could and I try to stay humble and do right by everyone. Keep up the great work, brother!
We do really need to start talking to our young ones about what it really is to be a man or a woman. We can't continue to leave it in the entertainment industries hands.

My son grew up listening to Skynryd. He played their music when he served in Iraq. Said it helped him in times of need over there. We played this at his funeral in 2011.
Bridget, I'm glad to hear you feel this way. My son has also heard this song his whole life. He turns 32 next month and is an amazing person. I can barely see because I'm crying as I write this. Such a great song. I had tickets to see Skynyrd the year they had the plane crash. I'm still sad. Will never forget their greatness. Rock on!
I cry sometimes when I listen to this song, its beautiful but also honest and important. Wish I would have listened when I was young. Would have made life sweeter.
Me too. This came out when I was in high school. How different and easier my life would be if I had listened. Still one of my favorite songs, so beautiful!
Skynyrd had a lot of party songs but had a ton that told life stories. Even the party sing gimme three steps had a very important life lesson in it. Lol
This song holds special meaning for me, very melancholy. My nephew passed away six weeks after his mom died (my sister) and they had a connection through music. This song was played at his funeral, he was also a huge LS fan.
The good book says this: Proverbs 12:11-" The one who cultivates his land will be satisfied with food. The one who pursues worthless things lacks good sense." Amen!
This is my husband’s favorite song. I had the DJ play it at our wedding for his dance with his Mom. He didn’t know it was going to play - wow! His reaction was awesome! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Watching this on 09/04/2021 you asked so im not afraid to answer. Every time i hear this Song i cry my Grandma Was My Everything and She Taught me Everyone of these lessons!! God Bless "My Little Lady"
We all sang this at my friend's memorial service. I miss you Kyle and think about you every time the wind blows. I'm glad you're not suffering any more. The world has lost a wonderful person, but Heaven has gained a beautiful soul.
My mom told me in a round about way the same things when I called her and told her I was getting married. I was 19 at the time and my still wife was 18 in 1976. I never forgot her words and though she passed away, those words still mean the world to me. I think of her "talk" with me every time I hear this song.
This is a song that I seek out when I start to feel stressed out about things that I know don’t really matter. It’s good for getting me refocused on what’s important at life, and tuning out the rest of the toxic distractions.
When I hear this song, I think of my daddy. He used to play guitar and sing this song with his band. He maybe had an accent but he had a hell of a voice. He came from such a different world than the life he gave me but the idea behind this song was just as true no matter where we're from.
Ronnie Van Zant's producer for the album this song was on didn't like the song. He said it was 'boring.' Ronnie, who was an intimidating person, walked the producer to his Bentley, shut him inside, and said: "I'll let you know when we're finished recording." The producer telling this story said: "I feared him." The song was a big hit.
I have one son. My only child and if I could leave him something when I'm gone it's every word to this song. To be good man, stay humble and never forget there IS SOMEONE UP ABOVE 😭❣️❣️❣️
I told my son, this was my song to him. Live by these words, my only son. This song gets me to the very core. It gives me chills listening to it. I’ve loved Lynyrd Skynyrd since I was about 15 yrs old back in the 1980’s growing up in Southeastern Kentucky!
RVZ was a musical genius. He never wrote down a single lyric. He always said, "there in my head". Street Survivors was released on October 17, 1977, my 15th B-Day. October 20, 1977, they were gone. One of the saddest days in Rock history. Check out the Street Survivors LP. Steve Gaines brought new life to the band after Ed King left. RVZ is a Rock God.
I've always loved this song. After my mom died, it took on a much deeper meaning. I can't listen to it without crying now, but I still love it. Music like this touches your soul.
Lynyrd Skynyrd (/ˌlɛnərd ˈskɪnərd/ LEN-ərd SKIN-ərd)[2] is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964. The group was originally named My Backyard and comprised Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocalist), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass guitar) and Bob Burns (drums). The band spent five years touring small venues under various names and with several lineup changes before deciding on "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in 1969. The band released their first album in 1973, having settled on a lineup that included bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell and guitarist Ed King. Burns left and was replaced by Artimus Pyle in 1974. King left in 1975 and was replaced by Steve Gaines in 1976. At the height of their fame in the 1970s, the band popularized the Southern rock genre with songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". After releasing five studio albums and one live album, the band's career was abruptly halted by tragedy on October 20, 1977, when their chartered airplane crashed, killing Van Zant, Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, and seriously injuring the rest of the band. Lynyrd Skynyrd reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant as lead vocalist. They continue to tour and record with co-founder Rossington (the band's sole continuous member), Johnny Van Zant, and Rickey Medlocke, who first wrote and recorded with the band from 1971 to 1972 before his return in 1996. In January 2018, Lynyrd Skynyrd announced its farewell tour,[3] and continue touring as of October 2019. Members are also working on their fifteenth album.
I had the very great honor of hearing this live in1973. Every person should hear these words said to them by someone they love. It would change the world.
I used to make my boy listen to this when he was a small child! I was a single parent raising a son with no male roll model for him and these words were so deep and truthful 💙 my son is now 23 and a simple man!!!!
Totally agree, so many great songs they recorded never made it on the radio. Now if you don’t already have it, go get yourself the album called “Skynyrd’s First, The Complete Muscle Shoals Album” you won’t be disappointed!
Holding my dying mother's hand at 11yo. in '82. Her basic last words to live simply. I'm 50 now and it tears me up and takes me back in that hospital every time.
This is a song that touches the very depth of your soul. It will move in ways that you never been moved. For anyone that has a mother that loves you deeply has had a talk like this. Great song!
My mom had a lot of mental problems. I know she loved me dearly, and I know that the words in this song were the words she would have told me if she had known how. Toward the end of her life she became a lot more lucid, and she was finally able to tell me some of these things when we were both adults. A blessing for sure. So when I hear this song, do I ride cloud 9? Do I medicate? No none of those things. I remember a loving mother who did everything in her power to protect me and get me to manhood so she could finally be free of this place. Cancer took her from me. I like to think that maybe a part of her was relieved when it was over. God knows I miss you and love you mom and I hope you finally have some rest and some peace. I'm ok. I love you always. God bless.
When I first heard this I didn’t have children, but I liked it so much. Once I had my boys it always brings a tear to my eye. As a mama, it’s all you can want for your son. I’m so thankful both my boys chose a good path.
I also weep. There has been a rift between my son and I since my husband died 9 years ago. Over the last few years, he has grown up so much and is raising HIS son alone. We are slowly healing and this song says so much about all I want for both my son and grandson. We have had so much loss in the last 10 years that it has been hard to cope. My son lost his paternal grandparents within a year of one another, his father,my mother, my father, and finally my brother who died by his own hand. I was in the hospital for 6 weeks in June following a series seizures that caused brain swelling and caused me to accidentally overdose on my meds. (I am battling the same combination of illness that killed Glenn Frey of the Eagles.) Last week, I had suspicious patches on my lungs and had a battery of tests to be checked for lung cancer. The films were clear as God was watching over me yet again. This the 3rd time I've been spared from death. These situations take a toll on anyone who has to experience it with you. Jamel, thank you for reading. Sorry about the length, but I kinda feel like we're friends. I wish you and your wife a blessed day!🙏🙂
Simple Man is the song I picked for my son when he was in high school and yes it’s a head bobbing and eyes closed kind of serenade from a mom to her son.... glad you enjoyed it!
"Follow your heart and nothing else"... Words that I now try to live by. I usually cry just a little when I hear this song. I can envision this scene of the mother or aunt or nanny sitting down this little boy with a frog in his pocket and squirming, maybe in a porch swing or outdoor bench and pouring her wisdom all over him like warm syrup over buttered pancakes.
I have Partied out on the gravel roads, and I have melted in a Chair, to this! When I was young, this was the Air We Breathed! Inhale and hold! But not anymore, inhale! But THE MUSIC,NEVER LEAVES! Just Live Simple,Son!
@@Gutslinger The inclusion of Mr Banker made me fall in love with the box set. What a song, what a lyricist (so simple yet so great). The man was so earth bound but so inspired. I used to think that sometimes the band held him back but they were perfect. They were all touched by greatness. I wish they still had the show Man, Moment, Machine, because eventually they would have gotten around to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Such a great song. I had tickets to see Skynyrd the year they had the plane crash. I'm still sad. Will never forget their greatness. Rock on!
Shit thats beautiful. Brought a year to my eye
Awww, sweet story...🎶🤗🎸
Lolol
I cry sometimes when I listen to this song, its beautiful but also honest and important. Wish I would have listened when I was young. Would have made life sweeter.
Me too. This came out when I was in high school. How different and easier my life would be if I had listened. Still one of my favorite songs, so beautiful!
Skynyrd had a lot of party songs but had a ton that told life stories. Even the party sing gimme three steps had a very important life lesson in it. Lol
I have your same reaction as I listen to Skynard even after 40 years
This song holds special meaning for me, very melancholy. My nephew passed away six weeks after his mom died (my sister) and they had a connection through music. This song was played at his funeral, he was also a huge LS fan.
I'm really sorry loss hit you twice like that. It is hard to get through once, much less twice in a row.
Deeply sorry for your loss
Recently lost a 8 yr old nephew. Could have been my son's twin. Let's play a song for a couple Kings. ua-cam.com/video/PbeIv39s04s/v-deo.html
Phyllis B Thank you. I don’t know how my brother-in-law got through it. They had been together for 40 yrs, since she was 16.
Samuel Thank you.💜
The good book says this: Proverbs 12:11-" The one who cultivates his land will be satisfied with food.
Love the message of this song, stands the test of time, and we all sure need the reminder from time to time to try to live as simple we can.
"Gimme Back My Bullets" by Skynyrd, hard funk rock!
and so other know, It is not about bullets for a gun
One of my favorite Skynyrd songs.
Excellent tune
When I listen to this song, I like to kick back, pop a cold one, smoke a little green, and just chill :)
Same 😂
Greenery is life and earths medicine
Nothing wrong with that
Yep exactly.
@Jesse Kehrley, just like what we were doing as we listened to it way back when. 🙂👍
All of their songs are just simply great. Ballad of Curtis Loew is a must.
I think of my Mama!! So very blessed to have her still!! I’m 51 and she’s my rock!!
Amen @ Lia
I have two sons and this is always been my prayer for them. Whenever life gets hard I tell them be a "simple Man"
Ronnie Van Zant's producer for the album this song was on didn't like the song. He said it was 'boring.' Ronnie, who was an intimidating person, walked the producer to his Bentley, shut him inside, and said: "I'll let you know when we're finished recording." The producer telling this story said: "I feared him." The song was a big hit.
J, this song is such a lesson to young men today. Be a simple man. Love, worship, be truthful, don’t covet money. Great song. Great review.
edb Amen & women to look for a simple man!
Told my son that this is the best advice that I could ever give him.
DarkAngel4 RMK
Good mom... he will thank you for it.
Simple words to live by ! One of their better songs that truly resonates with everyone.
"Forget your lust, for the rich mans gold" when i hear this song it reminds me of where center is and brings me back to reality
'Tuesday's Gone' is another good one. "That Smell' & 'Call me the Breeze' too.
That's the Genius of some of Lynrd Skynyrd songs . Absolutely Beautiful and nothing compares to it .
This song is the message I want to tell my son when he is older. Words to live by.
Try Marshall Tucker's "Cant you See" or Molly Hatchet's "Dreams I'll Never See"....thanx for your great reactions!
Those are 2 of my favorites!
2 excellent suggestions!
Yeah, love that cover of Dreams!
If this song doesn't get down to your soul, check your pulse.
I love how Cameron Crowe included this song on the excellent movie "Almost Famous". Truly a song for all times.
As well as, " Tiny Dancer ", by Sir Elton John ! Awesome movie, through and through!
If you watch some LS make sure it's the original guys not his brother singing.
"Every Mothers Son" and "All I Can Do Is Write About It" are two VERY underrated Skynyrd songs that I think you would like a lot.
Totally agree, so many great songs they recorded never made it on the radio. Now if you don’t already have it, go get yourself the album called “Skynyrd’s First, The Complete Muscle Shoals Album” you won’t be disappointed!
Makes me tear up because it was one of my late husband's favorties.
Great song!
Bro I'm loving your channel more and more every day it's really helping me get tru this hard times whit cov-19 thank you very much brother 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I wish you and your wife a blessed day!🙏🙂
Ballad of Curtis Lowe .You owe yourself a listen.Another reason to smile with whats going around us now.
This song makes me sway back and forth and I damn near cry. Love it so much.
Simple Man is the song I picked for my son when he was in high school and yes it’s a head bobbing and eyes closed kind of serenade from a mom to her son.... glad you enjoyed it!
His Mama is a woman after my own heart. Exactly what I always wanted for my boy's.
I cry! I have 4 sons and this is what I wish for every one of them💙💙💙💙
Skynyrd is a classical story teller. A classic on the lighter side is called "Give me Three Steps". Check it out.
This is one of those songs that always makes me cry, just so many feelings flow through me with this track.
Love this song. A staple for everyone’s playlist. I recently heard Chris Stapleton’s cover of Simple Man and it was pretty amazing.
I love me some Chris Stapleton, but after hearing him 'try' to sing LS I have a whole new appreciation for Ronnie Van Zant's vocals!
Check out Deftones version.
Try checking out Shinedown’s version, Brent Smith pulls it off pretty well.
Michael Buck Thanks, I just listened to it and I dig it! Is it true that Chino and the guys were like 17 when they recorded that?
Dan Ginter Yes! Thank you, I listened to this version as well and Brent’s tone is impeccable.
My all time favorite song. My son has full filled this song. My one and only child my son ❤️
I have Partied out on the gravel roads, and I have melted in a Chair, to this! When I was young, this was the Air We Breathed! Inhale and hold! But not anymore, inhale! But THE MUSIC,NEVER LEAVES! Just Live Simple,Son!
Checkout “four walls of raiford” and “Tuesday’s gone” and “Curtis Lowe”.
3 of my favorite right there.
Edit: Mr Banker's pretty good too.
Tuesday's Gone is a truly great one!
my favourite is "I never Dreamed" just found this gem a few years ago.
@@vicedpowers1750 I'm glad you found it! It is one of my favorite songs from a perfect album. I was delivering newspapers as a kid when it was released, then I had to see the headline before I delivered the papers that day about the plane crash... I still feel scarred from that event.
I usually shed a tear when this plays it reminds me of ole friends and family long gone
Skynyrd always had a certain attitude that came through musically, drums, keys, guitar. Bands can learn a lot about dynamics from Skynyrd.
I cry when I listen to this one...every time. I have played this for my one and only son. I hope he listened! These are super important lessons!
I’m 58.. been listening to them a long time and their songs are timeless.. Simple Man is one of my favorites.
I cry, for Ronnie Van Zandt.
He probably wouldn't want us to ✌️♥️
And I cry for them all................
@@reallymysterious4393 you do not cry alone in that regard 😭
@@zebulon8819 Ronnie is probably jammin with Stevie Ray Vaughan up there right now...
@@reallymysterious4393 along with the Allman brothers ♥️
This song was played at our wedding , it was the mother and son dance. Long live Skynyrd!!
I took my 14 year old to Las Vegas . Just the 2 of us mom and older brother stayed home that day .. I put on my music selection and this one pop up 1st so I cranked it up . Halfway thru my son seen a tear come down my sun glasses.. his look said so much words without speaking.. powerful music 👍
I'm 56 years old, so I grew up with this music.... my mother played this song for me when i was a kid and she told me that this song genuinely expressed what she wants for me to strive for growing up.... my mother passed away 5 years ago so when I hear this song it brings out so many great emotions of and it also makes me very sad because I miss my mom so much... im actually crying right now but my heart 8s filled with a perfect type of contentment because I hope my mom knows that I have become that Simple Kind of Man that she knew I could be... thanks Mom!!!
This is in my top 5 favorite songs, and the best by Skynyrd. One of the best songs ever written
