A successful landing would have been an extreme surprise, considering NONE of the phases of this flight had ever been done outside of computer simulations before. That they were able to get successfully through all the phases but the last on their first try is frankly very impressive.
Such a surreal perspective. That thing is HUGE, and seems to be falling so SLOWLY but then flips over at the last second so FAST for something that size. Incredible.
It was insane to watch with our eyes! It is far larger than I could've imagined, and it lifted and fell much slower than I imagined... then the FLIP! So fast! I cannot wait to watch the evolution of this beast.
Tim is in for so much more of that staff next year... I am not sure he can take, actually. Worried for his health, that what I am. And not because of COVID-19, nope. Happy New Year to ya'll. //Let 's die on Mars//

Thank you guys for this amazing content. You're giving us all the opportunity to see history being made, even if we're on the other side of the planet. Thank you thank you thank you!
Really appreciate you saying that. Its such a huge part of our mission to share not just what is happening here , but what it feels like to witness or be part of it. We are all part of it.
Best video I've seen that has a substantial foreground for scale. Especially useful for showing the rate of descent of the skydive, and the altitude of the flip.
Great! Exciting! That's what I wanted to see! Please, when SN9 flies, do the same shot but with a wideframe up, so we could see the whole trajectory of the flight, up to the apogee :)
Thanks! Will probably keep this particular wide frame at the horizon for the foreground bill will have wider shots that also track Starship with the telescope.
Whilst waiting for the first orbital Starship flight attempt (longer than any of us would like!), it's great to revisit your wonderful video/film library to a get a fix when suffering withdrawal symptoms! After watching Everyday Astronauts Artemis 1 coverage, I cannot wait to see what your talents and new equipment will bring when Starship blasts into the sky eventually. It will be awesome. Love and thanks.
They were only firing at 1/3rd of what they are capable of too, plus whilst 2 were used for the flip and getting it upright, only one was being used for landing (unfortunately that was the one that failed 😢 ) Still not bad for only a 30% success chance for it's very first flight, let alone doing the belly-flop manoeuvre. 😁
@@Ryukai-san Pretty sure it was meant to be two engines landing. The one lost pressure and went out early. The other burned too hot maybe because of the extra oxygen (and fuel?) meant for the other, as well as its own. The green flame is the copper engine components burning because of overheating so badly.
See, completely without begging me to subscribe, like and comment and all that bullshit i just did all that because the content is amazing and worth a sub! i wish people would stop wasting our time by telling us to subscribe an shit and just focus on their content! Again, amazing Video, nice audio, hope we see more of that in the future!
This is what I've been looking for, a wide range view of the landing manouvre!! It's quite amazing how slowly it seems to fly on it's belly!! Amazing work SpaceX!! We may be able to see SN9 test before January 1st!! Let's GOOOO!!! :D :D :D
Also: “Was that a success?? Was it good??” The uncertainty everyone had, even of the quality of the test serves to only make it more interesting I think.
Scanned the comments... Glad I'm not the only one who heard someone that sounds like Matthew Mcconaughey haha, but seriously, love y'all! The only videos I can watch back and remember the launch and get the goosebumps again.
After being floored with the gravitas of the acoustics of my first and only rocket launch witnessed in person (FH demo 2018) I still get withdrawls. Listening to this again from the future (past? starship and superheavy were just stacked for the first time) I am so excited to see the full stack launch. if 3 engines sound this impressive from this far away...imagine a few dozen
The goal of this flight was to gather data on & demonstrate ascent, engine operation, glide control, & flip... Previous SN hops had already demonstrated launch & landing. So a big success with SN9, SN10, etc following close behind.. Subsequent tests will expand the flight envelop with higher engine power, acceleration & altitudes... including heat shield tiles.
I love this view because It shows how successful that landing flip was. It really orients itself decisively and slows down to a craw before the fuel pressure issue, where you can see it loose thrust and accelerate into the ground at the last moment. Close up shots are fantastic, but don't show how near this thing was to landing first attempt.
Watching this live on UA-cam was the closest this Englishman's ever come to "Whooping like an American". Something for your nation to be proud of. Wish I could've been there with you, supping some ice cold brews. Congrats The US. You're now world leaders in rockets AND craft beer!
This is awesome! The atmosphere right there and then must have felt amazing, and I wish I could see this in person, do you have the same view for SN10?
Watched EDA live stream of it it. It was epic. Best thing in 2020. The raptors are probably the most impressive thing. If those engines prove to be as cheaply reusable as we hope then I’m confident the rest is solvable. Next exciting things to come 1. Stick the landing 2. Hop of super heavy 3. Starship reach orbit and survive re-entry. 4. Orbital refuel 5. Moon landing 6.mars entry 7.isru on mars 8. Human flight 9. Humans landing on mars
Thank you for posting this. Absolutely incredible. The tracking shots just don’t reveal the crazy audacity of even trying this. If I were Elon and someone had shown me a CGI mock up of the attempted landing, I think I would have closed the books and gone to look at investment opportunities in organic farming, or something.
That's the sound of three raptors at partial throttle. Imagine 28 at full chat. Superheavy is going to be absolutely unbelievable.
I cannot imagine! and I can't wait!
Hold on to your butts. ua-cam.com/video/-W6as8oVcuM/v-deo.html
it's also going to climb really fast, much faster than this did on 3 engines
I'm just happy to see each step of the way! Godspeed SN9
The sound would probably cause some major disturbances at south padre island
Watched it a million times and still can’t believe the landing maneuver worked as well as it did. Unreal.
I mean.. it worked great, but it definately didn't land lol

I couldn't sleep that day.. Unbelievable! and I couldn't sleep again when SN15 happened 😅
I think I can safely say that Texas is going to thoroughly enjoy starship testing
Agree
I come back to watch this every once in a while. The feeling is still incredible!
Thank you. SN8 holds a special place

Air resistance on what is effectively a 15 storey building is amazing :D
Terminal velocity just before relight (at 700 m altitude) was 92 m/s, impact was 42 m/s. Being so big makes it seem slower than it really is.
I love the "it's over, it's over" right before the reverse flip
my favorite too
Some say you can still hear Tim Dodd yelling to this day!
It echos between the hotels in never unending waves

Beautiful. I can't wait to hear everyone's reaction when it actually lands. Oh my god
and we lost it for this mission.... just wait
I'll be excited when it lands from orbital velocity. And I'll lose my absolute shit when it lands from interplanetary velocity.
@@xlynx9 I mean, the landing velocity should all be the same tbh. When starship lands it will be at terminal velocity independent of where it came

This is the perspective I most wanted to see. I knew the relight was low, but not this low!

Awesome video!!!! This really gives you an honest look at just how incredible this craft is.....
Another beautiful documentation of one of the greatest feats in recent human history, if not ever, from Cosmic Perspective.❤
Really appreciate you providing this locked shot. The distance relationship to the landing flip maneuver is clear here and super impressive.
"It's over, it's over, it didn't light the engines" - so far from truth :D
It double lit the engines 🤣
Also after the sound from the landing burn and explosion has ended some time ago: "There's gonna be a big boom now".. No, wrong again. 🤣
How should they have knew better at that point of the story? Especially if they aren't balls deep in that topic. =)
It literally floated down. This thing is gonna be awesome. One helleva design!!
The lack of speed with which it falls is still un-nerving and awesome at the same time.
Thanks! I've been looking for this perspective!
