Mitch: I live in Glendale. Right down the street as a matter of fact. Hugely disapointing for me and the rest of the loyals here. I don't see what "Major Rehab" the Gila River Arena needs myself. The Coyotes have done NOTHING but fuss. They're like a spoiled kid that gets whatever he wants. Threats by the team to move to Tempe were heard loud and clear; That's why they're asses will be on the street! A loosing team, with a pissed off fan base isn't the answer for Glendale. There are alot of better places for the city to flush their money down the toilet than the Coyotes! As a fan, I'm upset. I really don't have pitty for Coyotes Management here; Ya gotta pay the bills! Sadly....... Without NHL HOCKEY in Glendale, the Gila River Arena will be a ghost town! When they started dumping contracts, I thought it was so they could obtain a quality player that the fan base could then get behind the team. We all loose!

I live in the West Valley (Surprise) and it's great to have NHL hockey just a hop over in Glendale. But, the population base in the West Valley just isn't enough to survive and folks won't drive from the East Valley to watch a losing team. I love the Yotes, I have an 11-game package and will enjoy every moment of it (Gila River Arena is a nice facility). I'm hoping they work out the deal with Tempe (smack dab in the population center - ASU (has a hockey team), Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Mesa), but we have to be realistic and know there's a big chance they'll wind up leaving AZ. It'll be disappointing, but it is a business and the NHL has been propping them up for years. Should the Yotes move, it would be great if they could move an AHL team here. I lived in the Denver area when they brought in the Denver Grizzlies for 1 year before the Avalanche was moved to Denver, games were a blast.

She said that every home game feels like a road game because there's always more jerseys and cheering for the opposing teams. They do heavily rely on tourist money. No one in the Southwest is very into hockey, unless they're a transplant or snowbird. When I lived in SoCal, most people thought the Ducks were a minor league team. They literally don't care. In a market like Glendale, that's basically the Phoenix metro area. They're competing for attention with football and basketball, which are just much more popular in the states.
Contrast that with Quebec City, where people are hockey mad. They have a built-in audience forever. They had crappy owners in the past as the Nordiques, but with the right ownership group and right strategy they could make a ton of money. It should be a no-brainer. The NHL always seems to have a bug up its ass about francophones and French language media. But it's the right place to be. It's a market that will support a team.

Most people in the Phoenix area won't consider going to a game because they don't feel like driving 30 minutes to 2 hours to get to the arena. I mean, getting off work at 5:00 PM on a Tuesday evening, rush home to p/u the family and drive across the valley to Glendale for 7:00PM game and doing so for 41 games a season doesn't motivate people to buy season's tickets. It might be OK 8 Sundays a season where you can spend all day tailgating for the NFL but doesn't work for the NHL. I think both would make money and be successful. Personally, I think Houston makes more sense RIGHT NOW, as they have an owner, a building, a fanbase, and everything.

And I wish Atlanta got a shot with a decent team and more competent ownership. It's one of the reasons I don't hate the idea of expanding beyond 32 teams. The Coyotes have been there for 20 years now, have a steady supply of hockey fans from up north and a growing interest in the sport from the people who've grown up in the Valley. On a long enough timeline, I'm sure Houston could be a better hockey city, but Phoenix being the 5th largest city in the US and having already established its hockey roots there would mean the Coyotes would be walking out on only a slightly smaller market.
