    Love your videos, soothing narrative and background/insight into the culture around the subject matter! Thank you so much :)
    I just wanted to feed back that I really find it very upsetting seeing depictions of animal harm/cruelty (and it can affect me mentally afterwards), so thought I might suggest that maybe you give a heads up for videos that include this, especially when it's a jumpscare? I know you have the general warning at the start, but maybe it would be good to add a little trigger warning section in your description that lists the specifics - that way it wouldn't spoil things related to the story for people watching the video, but allow people like me to check what the 'dark' subject matter is before watching :) I think there's a lot of cases where some mature content is totally fine for people, but for whatever reason, there may be a particular topic that is very distressing for them and it's nice to be able to either avoid it or mentally prepare first. :)
    I hope that's OK to say. Like I mentioned, I really appreciate your work and don't want to appear ungrateful. Hope you, Mrs and Baby Owl are all doing well

    • @frightranker
      @frightranker  6 місяців тому +6

      I debated that and usually I do, but it's a balancing act because the impact of what happened would have been lessened had it been telegraphed.
      That said - I decided against it because all you see is a carcass. You never see any sort of abuse or anything along those lines.
      It's also a situation where no trigger warning is going to be detailed enough or sufficient for everyone, meaning that even if I were to basically spoil the plot wholecloth it might not work.
      Tough one.
      I may add a warning for the finished video.

    • @cheepytiger
      @cheepytiger 6 місяців тому +4

      @@frightranker I completely understand. With regards to it being a carcass, for me personally, the implication of the violence that preceded it can still be quite powerful, but I totally get that won't be the case for everyone :)
      The balancing act is why I would suggest tucking it at the bottom of your description as a little section, so it's harder for people to stumble on if they aren't looking for it. I reckon you can also keep it vague. I know for me personally, just knowing it's something flagged up is enough to be able to prepare and decide to go ahead or not. Often the shock is the worst part. So even something like 'animal death' which could happen in any number of ways would still help.
      EDIT TO ADD: Could even be a pinned comment, so it has to be expanded to read :)
      It's definitely a tough one and I respect your decision either way - it's your channel, after all! ☺ I only fed back because I hoped it would be useful for you as your channel gets more popular, to take, adapt or disregard as required. I hope my rambling makes sense! Thank you so much for replying, as well.
      In terms of the plot - I keep wondering if she's a reality-warper, making everything happen unconsciously as she tells it or something like that ;)

      The story leading up to that point provided all the context clues we needed. We were either going to confirm she lied or find a dead dog. The dog being present was the best way to subvert our expectations, so there was always a chance of seeing something graphic and possibly uncomfortable.

    One really interesting thing that I found while reading this manga is that the Portuguese word for both "bullet" and "candy" is the same ("bala"), which makes it sometimes not clear what exactly Nagisa is talking about (at least in the translation I read), and overall just makes her dialogues a bit more cryptic.

    The Brothers Riddle: It reminds me of maybe another version. Riddle: A woman is at her mother's funeral when suddenly she sees a man so handsome and mysterious, she instantly falls in love with him.
    Unfortunately, she never got a chance to talk to the man. The next day, the woman kills her sister. What was the motive? Answer: A psychopath would know. The answer is that the women killed her sister because she hoped the mystery and handsome guy would also show up to her sister's funeral and she would be able to see him again. Thanks for your work I really enjoy it❤

    I really like stories that involve or potentially involve "unreliable narrators" where now we get this uncertainty that something is wrong with the main characters and with the reveal of the dead dog it just screams mystery. The dialogue feels real and casual which makes this story so far extremely interesting, take your time on the next video, the jumpscare really got me
    edit: also just by the first volume how come the story and dialogue is already better then recent MCU movies and shows it's like the writers just don't know how to make interesting characters while here we got insane suspense moments and tackle dark subjects

  • @OneMadApple

    yeah, that story about someone meeting the love of their life at a funeral, and then going home and offing someone eles, thereby causing another funeral to happen so they can meet the love insterest again is an old story that sometimes comes up in logic-testing riddles, alongside stuff like that old poem "brothers and sisters I have none, but this man's father is my father's son."
    the funeral one doesn't exactly stack, though. just because the guy knew her husband doesn't mean he'd necessarily go to another random family member's funeral as well.

    Ok so I just binged the entire series and I have to say: Thank you for introducing me to another such wonderful manga that I would have never otherwise picked up on my own. Really enjoyed the tension of the story and the almost slice-of-life rural Japan backdrop. While there are parts of the writing that really irritate me I have to admit that the dialogue and behaviors are VERY much teenage girls finding their way in the world written with genuine insight into the small dramas (that might not be so small!) dramas that unfold at that liminal time. The foreshadowing is chefs kiss perfect and so much of my read I always had plenty of thoughtmeat to chew about who killed the dog and if any supernatural existed in the series.
    As always, your analysis was the perfect spice to liberally apply as my brainteeth worked.
    I have one question now and probably a ton once you finish vol2 as I don't want to spoil: You mentioned the name of the one-hit wonder's song was 'loosely translated' as 'mermaid's bone'. Is there any way you can give a breakdown of it? I know Japanese is a very symbolic and contextual language and while I'm long past the plasticity period of learning new languages, I truly love to learn about the nifty differences between them.
    Thank you again for your quality work, good health and prosperity to the entire Owl Parliament and look forward so very much to part2
    P.S.
    Personally I think the 'violently lesbian comedic character's are gender bent self inserts for the creators, allowing for actions that while still considered inappropriate are dealt with more forgivingly as the perpetrator is female. I may be wrong on this but it fills to many gaps to be easily discounted.
    In the case of some female pervy mangaka we see this without the gender bend.

    • @frightranker
      @frightranker  6 місяців тому +4

      'Ningyo no hone' if I recall, so literally 'bones of the mermaid'. But there might be a pun or something with the kanji characters that I don't have access to. And yeah, I really liked this one a whole lot.
      Man, March and April are going to be wild. After the next MIA video, I'm doing part 1 of another deep dive, with part 1 of yet another coming out maybe at the end of March. And these, especially #2, get super cultural.

    Now I see somebody commented on it already 😂 this version of the brother would make also more sense. Not only would the women cause the encounter in which she would meet the man again (maybe), being her son’s funeral, but also make room for “hopefully” her “new man” and/or to start over (which was were my mind went straight away for an answer). That’s twisted 😏 But it makes the riddle a little more easier to rationalize and guess the answer. Sorry still hung up on this 😂 thanks again for your amazing and interesting deep dives and analysis❤

    I impulsively decided to stop the video before the reveal with the dog and read from there myself, and oh boy. It’s a great story, but it reallly got to me. How dare you make me experience this.
    I was constantly going back and forth in my mind on whether this would be fantasy or pure realism. I desperately wanted the mermaid stuff to be true, but as I started putting things together (roughly at the same speed as Nagisa) It was becoming easier and easier to explain away her lies with something more realistic. And the realistic answers were starting to really unsettle me. The foreshadowing and repetition used in this is so well done in a way that I didn’t even notice until attention was brought to it later. And I was doing fine until they showed the water bottle in the final chapter. Instant tears

    An interesting parallel between the two characters is that Nagisa wants bullets in a relatively acceptable reality and mikuzo wants candy in what appears to be an unacceptable reality. I don’t generally like psychological themes because I find them to be romanticized and lacking actual plot or motif. This story is a good blend of the theme and plot, so that it has an impact on the reader but keeps them invested as well.
