I know nothing about blacksmithing but my gg grandfather was one and I have his old anvil. This makes me want to get it set up and mess with it

You should - hammering on hot iron is exactly as much fun as it looks!
Plus it may come in handy when you need to tweak the fit of a new set of crucible tongs or what have you. My Dad told me his father had an anvil and forge too, for fixing tools and machines, when he was growing up on the old farm too. But sadly all that stuff has been gone for years. Guess I'll have to make do with my chunk of train track for now.

Thanks, yeah it was definitely fun. I've done some foundry work with Josh (the instructor) before this as well, he's a nice guy and very knowledgeable.

looks like alot of fun, I wish I was there to show you guys how it is really done, lol. :P Also, that hammer you were using, those are masonry hammers, and they are harder than anything to use for forging anything because they're so short, unbalanced, and the recoil on them is horrible.

Yeah, it really was a lot of fun. I'm not sure which hammer you mean, we each had two. The way he explained it, one was a softer hammer which we used for hitting the cold end of the bar to upset the other end, and the other one (the one with the cross peen) was hardened. We used that one for working the hot steel. 🤷

yea, the softer one is the one I was talking about, the faces of the hammer was more towards the handle more than the other one, it has kinda a stumpy hammer head on it.
Edit: my bad, it's called a club hammer
