      @spritercramberrydotnet4990 having a background in woodworking will be very helpful for blacksmithing since you already have a good understanding of tools, shops, and fabrication! Especially if you want to get into knife making/tool making, woodworking skills will be valuable.

    I’m turning fourteen in less than a month and living on a farm, and I’ve noticed my dad has to order a lot of supplies and metal and such, so I’ve decided that I should start blacksmithing to help him out, and when I saw this vid, this was the confirmation that I needed to start. You have a list of supplies, your opinion and tips and multiple options, you even told us that we didn’t need that big of a place! Seeing someone else who started around my age (17-3=14), I know that I can do that. I’m for sure subscribing, and thank you.

    Dude I love your videos! Awesome job! I’ve been wanting to get into blacksmithing, but I get so caught up in having all the “right tools” before I do something. You are showing that all you need is ambition and a couple of basic tools to get into this thing!
    And you are doing it in a freakin lifetime plastic shed… UNBELIEVABLE

    • @jimkeith3579

      all you really need to get started is something to heat metal, something to hold it, something to pound on and hit with and just go do it. I started with a piece of rail road rail, long handle pliers from Harbor Freight and a bucket forge made out of a metal bucket and plaster of Paris and a home made burner. You can get started and get better stuff as you learn.

Heck I've even done it! 2, if you know of a local Blacksmith close to you... go talk to him, he may just take you in to learn the trade,! Hey man, sorry for the late response! I’ve done a number of handle scales without a drill press, and they’ve turned out fine. Using a hand drill and good measuring methods can yield great results! However, using a drill press does make it way easier to be accurate. But we all gotta start somewhere!

    Hello! I am a recent sub and am getting into blacksmithing and I love the videos. I was wondering where you get the metal from?

    • @ToddKoch
      @ToddKoch  Рік тому

      I started with (and still use) rebar to learn how to forge. Scrap metal is a good option because then you're not losing money on practicing. I find most my rebar in construction sites, I just ask the workers if they're okay with me a taking scrap and normally they don't care. When it comes to buying actual metal, I like onlinemetals.com because they have a lot of varieties in metal type and thickness and are just a good streamline service overall. Metal really isn't expensive for the quantity you get per order, and you can even buy rebar for real cheap at home depot or most other hardware stores.

      I like to get my metal from construction sites and stuff like that… just be sure to ask the workers first, in my area they’ve been fine with me taking scrap rebar. You can also order online, I like to use onlinemetals.com, and they have good alloys and knife making steel. If you are just looking for metal to practice with though, I’ve found decent steel rods/rebar at Home Depot and similar places! Just remember to check if it’s mild steel or not- mild steel can’t be hardened so you can’t use it for tools or knives.
