Petrobond Cores, New Ramming Tool Parts

  • New sand rammer parts. I chose to make a more difficult to mold pattern for the peen end than it needed to be, so that both parts can be molded in one small flask. I am not saying it was a smart idea, but I hope you find this workaround interesting. Smaller molds means more molds laid out at a time.
You may have noticed I've been making matchplate production patterns for several molding tools in recent videos. On the heels of selling several molding toolkit sets to a local blacksmithing school last year and receiving inquiries for tools from several of my students there, I'm hoping to be able to offer improved and more affordable kits for sale at some point. If you would be interested in having a set, or any of the individual cast tools you see me use here, please let me know in a comment. I can make ones and twos of individual castings on demand, or If there is enough interest I may do another run of complete kits.

That surface finish is superb. The raised text came out perfect too.

Thanks Preso! I used plastic sign letters with the tabs nipped off the back. There is a selection of fonts and sizes available online. I didn't do this here, but if you cast a blank to use as a pattern, you can just soak the letters back off the casting after to recover the letters, I have cast a couple of sizes of blank plaques that I use this way so I can vary the text that's on them without having to make a whole new pattern. I've also used your 3D printer fonts before to good effect when using printed patterns 👍. I've also got an old trick for making much smaller pattern letters that I'd like to show, but first I need to find my dymo embossing tape gun amid all the clutter...

Awesome job! I was glad to aee it came out clean removing it from the sand. It definitely gave you a little trouble even after tapping it for awhile.

Thanks! 😃 Slow and steady wins the race. Rapping too much on patterns with text on them, especially rapping side to side, is how I always end up breaking off ie. the little sand triangles in the middle of the A's, so I try to go easy and sometimes end up having to gently wiggle it by hand using the draw screw for a few seconds til I feel it come loose. Seems to work for me

@@tobhomott oh yeah! I had that problem with the letters before. Lol. Hit it too hard and the dirt comes out with it.

    "Pound Sand" That's funny!
Another clever job. I would not have thought to try the sand core box. I thought maybe you were going to use a sodium silicate and sand core box, but that worked extremely well. Very nice odd side casting work (I think that wouid be the right term for it, maybe.)
    Superb!

First "bug out" sprue covers now this. I'm pretty sure I've just painted myself into a corner where every casting I make from now on must have text that is both a euphemism for "go away" and a description of the casting's function.

When doing sand, one must “pound” it.
I do recall speaking of a similar joke years ago…

I am copying those sprue covers with their labels, though - as in those *will* keep bugs, etc. out of the molds…
