- I Drove My 21 Year Old Mustang 3000 Miles to Laguna Seca For a Track Day! Here's how it went... In this video I detail my experience at Laguna Seca for my first track day. Never having done a track day before I signed up as a beginner and as you would imagine I learned a lot at my first HPDE. I was able to drop my lap time over 12 seconds from my first session to my last session. Couple that with the fact that I drove my car to and from the track over 6,000 miles total, I was very proud of what I was able to accomplish.

Wow, your wife is amazing. Not only is she supporting your multi-week racing endeavors(on her honeymoon), but she's a great camera operator, too.
Actually, I just finished the video and now I know your wife is beyond amazing since she suggested this trip! This is love, man.
This wasn't all about me trust me. We only drove to Waco to go to Magnolia. Google Magnolia Waco to see what I'm talking about.
I was on the couch one day playing Forza. She asked what my favorite track was (Laguna Seca) and she goes let's go there for the honeymoon. I told her that's 35 hours 1 way if we drive straight there. Her response was "AND???" I was like well, I guess I gotta get started working on the car. Haha.
@@RepairGeek Only like 90% about you, then! lol Sounds like your marriage is off to a great start. Treasure that woman!
The fact your wife had a smile while filming you wrench on your car in a parking lot on a track trip means she is a super awesome stud of a wife and you sir are a lucky man Kudos to you guys¡
Hey! I was pitted in the garage next to you at Laguna! What an epic honeymoon, your wife and angel.
The BMW?
I know you talked about being hesitant on recording your honey moon, but this video is sooooooo coool!!! I, for one very much appreciate you taking the time to put this all together. very cool!
I would love to do something like this, though I don't have the vehicle to do it. I honestly thought it was going to be even more money, so, that $1100 seems worth it for the experience of doing it.
Your wife chose this place to go for your honeymoon? Wow, what a keeper she is. Not many women would even consider that as an option.
This was a fun video to watch, thanks for taking us along.
I have a pal that upgraded his 87 mustang daily driver suspension/brakes except he added a powerdyne blower. In 2004 we traded track runs in it for an entire day and the only car that did same track time was an extremely modified non street porsche 6 cyl trailered in. Owner was very surprised that Mustang total cost including purchase $12K and on its second engine at 420K miles, he admitted $8K just for a track day tuning. I have a lightly modified 1957 bird that out turns new gen Mustangs due to factory 51/49 balance, difference is when the bird loses a corner needs two lanes to recover, Mustangs one lane with one hand on the wheel. Older cars are cheaper keepers and more fun.
Great Vido, car looks like it’s handling nicely with all the modifications…
Very impressive !
Beautiful car.. I’m really happy to see you’ve made it all happen.. I’m stuck to your channel look forward to seeing the next upload.. 👏👏👏👏👏
Usually I would care less about someone going to a racetrack period,, But icing on the cake was the HONEYMOON part!!!! LMAOOO
Congrats on the wife and the track!!!!
Great video keep it up...👍
Thank you for sharing. Although I will never get to do something like this I like that you shared this with us. I am glad you made it round trip safely and that you had a good time. Congratulations on all!
This is awesome! What a great opportunity!
Take it to Tail of the Dragon next. Great road trip and all it costs you is gas money once you get down there. Insurance NOT a problem on public roads, LOL. Also, if you get a perfect week day like I did, you can do it 4x with basically no one on the road. 1200+ turns!
As long as you had fun that's all that matters cool vid
You've got one of the best suspension set ups made for a 1994-2004 Mustang. Really transforms the Mustang into a track weapon. Of course it takes a good driver to make it work. You were doing pretty good in that video.
Thanks!
I’m excited to do all of this suspension work to my kenne bell car. Gonna start building a short block soon and turn up the boost
Im impressed by you driving your mustang that far and back. I dont think I would have felt comfortable driving my 2003 Cobra or 2014 GT500 that far. Much less racing. Very cool. Glad you made it home. Im going to look into this hooked on driving.
So awesome! Would love to do a track day sometime with my 2000 GT, but not drive 3000 miles to do it.
I’ve been watching your videos and I really enjoy your “scientific” approach. That was epic and safe, and I’m glad to see that you and your wife went with you and both of you enjoyed it! That’s how trackday events should be safe and have your car make it in and back! Also you should follow Kenny Brown TV. The upgrades you did to your car is the recipe the Kenny Brown (RIP) recommends for a daily steet/highway driver and a weapon on the track (passing by those faster cars) all in the same car. This is the philosophy: 1. Chasis, 2. Suspension, 3.wheels, 4. Tires, and 5. Brakes in that order.
I've watched quite a bit of Kenny Brown. I agree with most of what he talks about. He's not a big fan of a Torque Arm rear suspension. His arguments are they add too much unsprung weight and are a dated design philosophy but, I never heard him talk about a better way to control axle rotation. Leaving the triangulated uppers of the 4 link to control the axle rotation while using a panhard bar for lateral loads seems like a compromise to me but, he was the engineer not me.
He was definitely a smart man and knew these cars well. I don't think anyone can dispute that.
Sounds like you had fun. Smooth is fast, High low High. Glad you paid for some instruction best way to learn instead of learning bad habits.
I got a lot out of the instructor for sure. I was turning in way to early when I started which had the potential for me to run wide coming out of the corner. Also like what Gary and I talked about in the video. My braking came a long way as well.
I see your wife waiting patiently at the end and have to think how fortunate you are. Many car guys get a companion that makes them basically give up being a car guy and that's sad. I know this is a very expensive hobby, we can be obsessive, etc and I get it. But they know that going into it and make people give that up. I don't know if that's completely fair. But your wife seems to let you have what you need and that's awesome!
If she wasn't into this type of thing, she wouldn't still be around. It sounds callus but it's true. I enjoy it too much to not have someone around that doesn't enjoy to a high degree. Otherwise it would just end up as a point of contention.
Wow ... New cars should make changing brake pads that easy ..😮
Luck Gal! LOL. Me and my Girlfriend (now Wife) had our 1st date, doing a track day at Laguna Seca 2017. Triple
Were you planning on uploading the 5 laps? It would be cool to see how the car handles.
The 5- 20 minute sessions? Not particularly. The content is pretty dry even by my standards haha.
@@RepairGeek Understandable lol.
Hey Yo! I'm in Bath and about to take delivery of a 22 Bronco and want to undercoat it as winter is approaching. Do you still recommend the Blaster undercoating? Akrowdy in the howdy
Welcome to the madness.
Great video, MM suspension totally transformers the fox platform. What tires did you run and any engine mod’s?
Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires. Completely stock 4.6 2v with a 2.5" magnaflow cat back on it.
@@RepairGeek better tires and a racing seat for next time. Had a similar setup minus k member with a procharger p1sc car was a blast .
@@anthonycardona3141 I couldn't have gone much more aggressive on tires. If I got caught in a rain storm on the drive I would have been hydro-planing all over the place if I stepped up to Cup2's or something comparable.
Same issue with the racing seat. 6000 miles in a race seat wasn't an option for my wife.
Are you planning to do a video on the data gathered from the Banks data monster? Be neat to see the temps & pressures as you’re lapping Laguna.
Probably not. This video's view count is low. It not my "normal" content so the majority of my audience doesn't care. I do have a ton of good info, in a nutshell I think the car needs more airflow through the front end. At this power level it's okay... If I up the power, I don't have the cooling to support doing something like this.
@@RepairGeek thanks for the reply!
What's the part # for the rear main seal that you used please? Thanks
I have a question about the Banks gauge mounted on your steering column. I have a 2004 Procharged Mach 1 and I'm looking for a single gauge that can read AFR and Boost. I've looked on Banks website and the gauges they sell that plug into the OBD2 port state they only work with 08 and newer vehicles. Any advice or recommendations? I always enjoy your videos, aways extremely well though out videos and great information!
I have this car set up with a 2- 4 Channel Analog modules from Banks. The Idash in this car does not use OBD data because it's not C.A.N. (08+). Every reading on my gauge comes from a sensor that is wired totally separately from the PCM. Banks currently does not offer an option for AFR with an analog module. The only way you can get an idash work on car this old is using the analog modules otherwise the only reading you will get is battery voltage.
@@RepairGeek Thank you for responding, after I let that question I went through your playlist and found the video where you hooked it all up. You set everything up very nicely and professionally how it should have been done! Very nice workmanship!
Did you get a chance to adjust that k member? I’m curious as to how much that affects the wheel center in the wheel well
MM said not to adjust the K-member again. They said I wouldn't be able to make it move far enough rearward to make a noticeable change. Per their recommendation, I ended up cutting out the lump in the plastic, relocated the wiring harness above the hump, using some sheet aluminum over the hole pop riveted in place. It's been fine since.
Did you have any oil starvation issues? What were your oil Temps? That's neat you used a banks gauge and monitor intelt and outlet oil cooler temp.
I didn't have any problems with oil pressure. My main concern was temperature. Oil temps were about 240 before the cooler and 220 after. Coolant was 220 but my sensor was located in the hottest part of the engine in the block drain on cylinder 8. Usually when these engines overheat and start to detonate it's on #8 first. Overall, the temps were stable but, that was about as hot as I was comfortable with. Half the oil cooler was behind the crash bumper in the front due to size. So I was effectively using 1/2 the cooler.
If I increase the power I need to look at getting more air through the radiator/oil cooler by changing the bumper, cooler placement, or going to an 03 cobra style vented hood.
@RepairGeek A spare hood with hood vent would help tremendously and making sure the Radiator has sealed ducting to it. You could have a crash bar fabricated out of rollcage tubing. That would give you way more space for the air flow to the heat exchangers.
I talked with Shawn at roadrace1 and he convinced me to install the Canton road race oil, monitor oil Temps, then install oil cooler kit if necessary.
Apparently, these engines have oil starvation issues with sticky tires and driving at the limit. Glad to hear you didn't have oil pressure drops. The 240f oil temp before the cooler honestly is resonable with the thicker oil you are running.
Looking forward to getting on track this season. I have been a miata guy for 10 years and recently switched it up to a 99 GT.
Steeda makes a tubular replacement crash bar. Just FYI.
You can cheat the oil pan by running an extra qt or 2. The stock pan holds more than the dipstick shows. Factory capacity is 5 qts you can put in 6 without any issues. I was running 7 here die to the cooler.
I think the biggest issue with the factory pan will be seen under extreme braking. There isn’t much to keep the oil from sloshing forward.
Good job geek great job congratulation you married man now good for you you both had good honeymoon back to the future now good luck you make good couples God bless
Why 15W50 on the oil? I always just used factory spec for my track days.
Every high performance Ford engine that was designed to see any track time uses a 5w50 motor oil. The lower performance versions use a 5w20. Chevy with the C7 says to use 5w30 in a wet sump car and 0w40 in a dry sump that was designed for track use. You need the extra viscosity because the film strength of the oil plummets when it's exposed to high heat. My oil temps were about 240 degrees when I was on track.
@@RepairGeek good to know. Thanks. I’ve never had an issue with 5w30 in the past 7 years but I did go from a GTI to now a mustang, so I’m sure the extra weight being thrown around code use the heavier oil.
Just my suggestion, pack flat cardboard with you or dumpster dive for some. A lot easier than laying on pavement. Slide in out out as well.
I agree with you 100% but, space was tight on this trip. I had a complete set of tools, the jack, and the jack stands taking up 1/2 the trunk. I wanted to be prepared for any potential issue driving a 20 year old car over 6,000 miles in 3 weeks. Add in 5 days worth of clothes, a small cooler, a place for souvenirs, and cardboard becomes a low priority because of space constraints.
Wow $1100.00 sounds like a good deal for all that.
didnt i see a vid of you putting cadillac brakes on your car?
Yep. Ran them at the track too. They work great.
If you rented a garage stall why couldn’t you change all the stuff on your car there?
I wanted to, but the problem was I was in the last session at 4:30. So I was on the track until 4:50. We had to be off the property by 6. I didn't have enough time.
Go to a parts store next time, people do it all the time
