I bought a 2001 Cobra new and I drove it right off the showroom floor. I still own it to this day.
Any issued with it? Has it been reliable?
My Camry will keep up with it now tho 😮
@@vidsbfree4me Camry's trapping 106mph in the quarter? I didn't think so.
Never buy the one one the showroom floor that’s the one everybody sits in and plays with the ac/ heat buttons and pump the gas😢
@@vidsbfree4me Even if that were true (it isn't), it's still a Toyota Camry and will never be a Mustang. Everyone likes different cars and acceleration isn't everything. Also if only speaking acceleration wise, this still would only be a fair comparison of a Camry made in 01, which took 8 secs to get to 60 mph, and that was the "SE Sport" version, not the vanilla.
Even the '24 Camry still takes 7.6 secs to get to 60, still not even on par with a base 01 Mustang V6 (7 secs flat).
Owned a Bullitt for 5 years. Awesome car, real fun and perfectly reliable. My favorite part? The Dark Highland Green paint. Simply gorgeous. Oh, and those 4.6L's might not have been the fastest buy my god they sound magnificent.
Those 2V cars were a joke. 260 hp out of a “muscle car” was pathetic, even for its home. The Camaros were hurting feelings even if they didn’t look as good.
@juanrivas494 260 hp was a healthy, if not awe-inspiring figure for the late 90s. It was almost as powerful as an NSX or a 911 for the time.
@@TheSmokingDen Having a 260 hp 4.6 V8 in 2001 and being less powerful than the 290hp V6 2001 NSX and 300hp 2001 V6 911 Carrera is rather abysmal. Just two years later, the 3.5 V6 Infinity G35 was making the same amount of horsepower. What's really sad is the 1989 Taurus SHO was making 220 hp out of 3.0 V6, you would think an engine 50% larger and with two extra cylinders would be a lot more powerful than a 12 year old design.
@@juanrivas494take a hike.
@@JacobPaul-ix7ocThose 4.6 V8s were not really made for performance, they were made for reliability and it was basically a small truck engine. It’s a modular V8 so it’s not hard to get more power out of them
I really miss my 2001 true blue cobra. These are such special and unique cars. took it up to 160 no problem, super reliable, sound amazing, and just so fun.
Love my true blue 01
That is what Mustangs are supposed to sound like.
Gotta love the New Edge Mustang from 99-04.
This car had to grow on my generation. We liked the retro styling. Since this looks the least like a mustang it's the most visually appealing to me now
@@enhancementtank5876I agree, I preferred the Fox at first, than I liked the SN95s for many years, it took me seeing tastefully modified New Edges to fall in love with them.. I still believe straight out of the factory a 94-98 is better looking, but when both are tastefully modified the New Edge timeless aggressive look wins every time..
Seems unbelieveable in 2024 but adjusted for inflation that would be around $41k for a new Cobra. Now Ford wants us to own nothing and be happy with their comical pricing.
More like $58K. That was a "$60,000" car in 2001, which is essentially what an equivalent Mustang of today is.
And comical quality..
Calm down champ. A 2024 Ecoboost also runs a 13.7 in the 1/4, is safer, better nvh, more reliable, significantly more tech etc etc etc and starts at $32K. A GT would CRUSH this cobra and starts at 43K.
It’s not just a ford problem though
And $29k in 2001 is $50k in 2024. F*** me UA-cam commenters are dense.
These were specialty cars and available (affordable) to almost everyone. Even the Mach I after this. Now it’s near impossible to own a 4 cylinder let alone a 5.0 or more!
What are you smoking?
Hommie do a quick inflation calculator these cars are the same price as they have always been
$30,000 from 2001 is $52,000 in todays dollars. The prices are the same, but a $52,000 Mach 1 is FAR more capable.
Problem is cost for other items, including necessities has risen faster than inflation, so there is less disposable income for cars, it gives the impression that they are much more expensive now.
Id be curious to do inflation calculations on say a 2000 Honda Civic to Todays model.

Kick ass automobile 🚘
Loved both of those. The terminator gets the glory but love that DOHC NA V8
I’ve owned several Mustangs including 2 Cobras and I’ve loved them all and had loads of fun with them. No matter how much the Chevy and Dodge guys love to trash talk the Mustang, after’24 it will be all alone in the segment again. The original and still the best!!
I'm a Chevy guy as much as I hate to admit it but I do like the 94-04 body style. Especially the sound of it with the right exhaust my goodness those sound like a beast an can get up a go too.
Such a classic. These look good to this day.
I had a 2003 cobra and it was so fun to drive. Back then it was an amazing value for the power/cost. I had to get rid of it when my wife got pregnant because we needed a bigger vehicle.😢
A head of its time. Amazing SVT
... "a head" ...
Ya not really, lol
"Honest to *heaven 320 HP..." nice subtle reference there :)
Complimentary kick in the BALLZ
I don’t know the reference. Can anybody explain?
These have aged nicely.
This car in Ford Racing 2 is what got me interested in Mustangs. It's still one of the meanest cars I've ever seen. I wonder how many have held up over the years.
I just bought my dream car, 2004 terminator cobra 😎
Love to see a retest with modern tire tech/compounds.
Lol what do you think it's gonna do, drop it into the 12s? 😆 🤣
These ran lowER 13s with drag radials, which were still better for drag racing than today's zr performance tires.
100% it would brake way better and maybe get off the line slightly easier, plus the handling. tire tech in the last 20 years has jumped so far. You have all season tires now that are better than slicks from 20 years ago
Good point. Like to see some Michelin 4s or cup 2's on it. Agree, the compounds and tire construction has come a long way since 2001.
Probably DRs with full air in them 😂😂😂 not aired down @@DrBeef216
@@2001chevycamaross Slicks? 😆 🤣 😂 what a load of bull. Is this what you tell yourself when you get knocked silly by modern cars to make yourself feel better?
1:35 John: THE ONLY TRANSMISSION NECESSARY IS A STIFF BUT PRECISE 5 SPEED MANUAL! LOL
his boomer was showing
still holds true
@@frankangelsolisah yes, you mean a 6-speed manual. Let me guess, you want a car with a CVT.
@@ErwinSchrodinger64 no thanks, Im a tremec T56 fan.
The Tremec in this car was great.
Free stay at the cross bar motel, have not heard that one in many moons 😂. John , you are a legend.👍
The Bullitt movie car had dark gray painted wheels with an aluminum outer rim. The American Racing wheels on McQueen's car were the Torq Thrust D.
Their trap speeds in the 1/4 are impressive; this tells me their top end is far better than their 0-60 & 1/4 mile numbers.
Go look at 370z numbers and used values…
I remember the Bullitt GTs new, being reviewed on car and driver, driven through San Francisco on the same route!
Just picked up a bullitt with 26k on it! Love it!
I owned the 04 Cobra back in 2004 and I drove it as my daily driver for 5 years 😊and yes that clutch was very stiff 😮
No, I am not surprised. The Ford Mustang is one of my favorite pony cars, too.
This is badass. Thanks @motorweek
The car was a good start and many people like taking something that’s not quite there, and get it to where they want it. I was never a huge fan of that body style, but the performance at the time for the money wasn’t bad.
This. It wasn't bad at all they had tons of potential too.
This was the year I owned just after high school! Memories
That revised 4.6 from 99 to 04 was definitely underrated. It had at least 290hp under the hood..
There are a bunch of these racing in NASA’s American Iron series and honestly they look like an absolute back to basics blast.
honestly, i used to hate the design of these but they're kinda growing on me.
This is one of my favorite Mustangs.❤❤❤
The trap speed is dead wrong for the Bullitt no way it was 105 mph, these cars trap in the high 90's.
Exactly what I said
I wonder if Ford cheeched up the test model a little bit
Reminds me of the old Terminator Cobra's (2003-2004).
They had one of _thee_ stiffest clutches in a production vehicle at the time. I swear that clutch pedal could snap your tibia and send your patella through the roof!
IMHO, the early 00's was the turning point for the Mustang. This is when the Mustang began its evolution from Pony Car to Muscle Car.
Unfortunately, they just don't make them like they use too folks.
Stay classy my friends.
What about the Mustangs from the late 60s and early 70s?
I had an 03 Cobra and to this day it still had the stiffest clutch of any car I've driven.
@@CJColvin Valid point.
I should have clarified that I meant Late Model rather than Classic.
Although to be fair, I would not necessarily place my old 1968 J-Code (11.71@121mph) in the same category as a Shelby GT500KR or BOSS 429. The former is clearly a pony car built to extremes by yours truly. While the other two are firmly placed in the Muscle Car category.
Fun story: My old Mustang cost me four girlfriends, two and half jobs and a _COPIOUS_ amount of money (mostly for gas and performance parts). She garnered roughly 9mpg which is *deplorable* fuel efficiency to say the least. Especially for a high schooler at that time even though gas was approximately .98 cents to $1.25 a gallon.
Oh how I miss her dearly!
Stay classy my friend.
@BertShackleford Thanks brother I sure will.
The brakes were not made by Brembo. The front calipers were made by PBR and the rear were made by Varga.
4:57 Man... I DO NOT MISS those 90's-2000's steering wheels. LOL
I had a 2001 Bullitt for 15 years and the best 1/4 mile was 14.6 @ 96mph. That review sure is making me miss it.
i bet the cobra was a production spec car and the bullet was a ringer.
@@2001chevycamaross No, 5-spd GTs ran very low 14s with some breaking into the 13s. The variance lies with people not knowing how to harness the power or shift properly.
@DrBeef216 not talking about the elapsed time, im talking about the trap speed. No way a car making 55 more hp, 265 vs 320 is only trapping 1 mph more
I ran 14.5 at 98mph with a passenger and spinning off the line
@@DrBeef216That’s funny because I had a 97’ GT with shorty headers, intake, 3.73 gears and exhaust, the best I ever ran was a 14.47?
My 01 Bullit has a Vortech Supercharger and I surprise a lot of people with it. I'm only like 380 whp
"Makes an honest to heaven 320hp" turns out they weren't so honest about that after all.
He said that because of what happened with the 99 cobras. The 01s made the advertised numbers.
Then they turn around and were dishonest again about the Mach1, they said 305hp which was bull 💩, 320 same as Cobra but with more torque at a lower rpm that spread over a wider rpm range courtesy of 5.4 intake cams. A year later they said Mach1 has 310hp lmao. Ford was so full of it lol.
There is one of these for sale about 2-3 hours of north of me, same year and color as in the video with 14k miles for $17500. I've been super tempted to driving up and purchasing it but I am not a big fan of red on any car or truck unless it is a deep dark red. I see at least 1-2 of these pop up every year for the $10-25k depending on mileage and condition.
I love my 01 cobra. Feels quicker than my gen 3 coyote and more raw
I just bought a 2001 cobra with 77k and change miles for kinda cheap then I was expecting, I’m super happy with it, smiles per gallon
The IRS on the cobra was designed with soft rubber bushings for comfort and smoothness. If you replace them with delring or polyurethane bushings then it will respond better and communicate more. Everyone I know that have tuned the IRS in their mustangs, because you can put that system on the old 79-93 foxbody, that's what they do, just replace the soft stuff with more rigid parts. We arent as worried about comfort lol😅
Fun , good handling musclecars indeed .
"We'd advise you to avoid trying to duplicate Steve McQueen's movie stunts on public roads, unless you wish for an extended stay at the Crossbars Motel." 🤣🤣🤣
Still a cool looking car
Always Liked The 4.6 V8 In The 2000 Mustangs Since I Saw It For The Time, God I Like The V8 So Much As A Love To Muscle Cars! :)
Just keep it away from crowds.
😂😂😂
That 01 cobra Bumper is godly I want one but I hate how expensive they are.
2 awesome cars.
The start of something good,, that snake soon had a sweet hood bulge, and a sweet whistle that sounded like a banshee when you hit that right pedal and woke up that boost the terminator,, ended all short comings , the rest as they say, is History 💜💜💜💜🥰
Video so nice i wish i could favorite it twice.
Crazy where HP has gone over the years. I had a mod 99 cobra 🐍 it was fast for its time but the coyotes are hard hitting
Looks awesome with no rear wing option
A common mod on the 99-04 was to remove the wing if yours had one.
I wonder if Dennis Collins ever bought one of these.
love the new edge mustang s[pecial edition cars.....owned them all atleast once
Imagine buying one of these only for the Terminator Cobra to come out two years later.
It was not really even two years later. I bought a brand new 2001 cobra in yellow and still have it to this day. I also bought a 2003 yellow cobra a year later. The way they were released, they came out almost exactly a year apart and I had to have one of each. The 2003 was a bad car with many issues and I sold it and got a 2003 corvette Z06 a few months later which I still have today as well. The 2003 cobra's had issues back then which many people forget because they were so fast. Mine pulled to the right because the shock towers were welded in wrong. The shifter hit the dash/console probably from some misalignment. The engine had a ticking sound. The rear end would clunk because the backlash was set wrong. Sometimes it would not go in to first gear. I ordered it with the chrome wheels and they shipped it with the other wheels and owed me them later on which I never got. The 2001 was a much nicer high revving engine than the 2003 cobra but it was not as fast.
ford had some cool stuff in the late 90's early 2000's the zx2 the zx3 they had that hopped up zx2 i can't remember the trim level i think it only came in yellow and cougar was a cool car with the manual and of course the contour was pretty neat too. all affordable fun back then. all the fun is gone i can't drop 50+ for a gt i have kids and a mortgage. It would be nice if ford could make something fun for the average working man and woman or whatever pronouns are out there now.
I still have the 03 10th anniversary cobra in the garage. Ive had better mustangs but shes still a load of fun.
Still the best sounding Mustangs.
Corrosion on the engine @1:22... crazy on a new car
As a Mustang guy, I didn't remember they came in 4x4, lol. Super high ride height stock
I had a 2003 GT and one of the first things I did was lowering springs and exhaust. A 2" drop on these was perfect IMO
Mustangs have come from a long way....who knew....nowadays, dealerships are asking 165k for a Cobra GT500 Heritage Edition.....😬
I never liked the C-pillar/panel gap on these.
Right? Doesn’t look sturdy but I still love them.
Ford needs to get back to honest, reliable performance in all their products, without repeated recalls
Crazy to think the 02 Altima 3.5v6 was only 0.6 seconds slower to 60mph.
*Ford had to recall The 1999 model cobra's due to a intake issue they were not producing 320 horsepower they we're producing 315!*
That was the 1999 Cobra. The 2001 had all the revisions made when Ford was forced to recall the 1999 models. This is the reason why there were no 2000 Cobras.
That's correct!! The 99 Cobra had the recall!
99’
Look at the overpriced Dark Horse.
In Toronto, CDN one dealership was selling a Dark Hourse + Markup for as much as an M3 Competition Xdrive. 😅😅😅
They added IRS but kept overboosted steering? Bunch of idiots.
What was the issue with the NA Cobra? Wasn't making as much power as claimed?
In 1999 they were not making advertised horsepower.
They actually recalled all 99 Cobras on August 6, 1999. Funnily enough, that's the day I was born (nobody asked I know)
@JRC99 lol, yeah but you telling me your age gives me an idea of what mustangs you grew up with. I bought a 2005 GT when they first came out. Rode that thing until 2022.
@@whalehands4779 I wasn't shitting on them, just saying you were correct in your assumption (and my bad if you weren't saying I was shitting on them. I have a hard time with context). I have an '89 GT my grandfather left me and it's one of my favorite things on this planet. I wouldn't mind having an 05-09 GT either. Always liked them.
Man, look at that wheel gap.
Man, those things sit so high.
Ford was really behind during this generation. The Ls1 Camaros were dusting these mustangs until the terminator came out later on. Ford needed a blower to compete. Also a V6 Altima was almost as quick as the 2V.
Is the Mustang America's favorite car?
No.
@@wr1ght939 i know your thinking the Corvette....😏 I only said the Mustang bc it's more affordable and at the end of the day we see a whole lot more of them on the roads
I believe so
Always wanted a cobra but the owners wanted to retire of the sale and most were beaten to death
Kick ass
@3:04, Before anyone screams out $29,205 was dirt cheap. Adjusted for inflation today that 2001 SVT would be worth approximately 51 grand today! Ouch 🤦♂🤦♂
Caraca que maneiro 👏👏👏 vermelho choque é muito lindo da cor do Mustang
What happened to the 60 mph slalom? Why did car reviewers move away from this?
I love my bullitt. 😊
I've said this before, I think Ford slipped motorweek a hot 2 valve, or the track is down hill. Never seen a stock 2 valve trap 105 mph in any form.
I was just thinking the same... but I'm not sure what they could have done. They responded best to gears and that would have been obvious. Even an 01 cobra trapping 106 is on the very high side of stock. My old roommate had a 02 GT with an intake, upper plenum, 4.30, skinnys on a MT radial with longtubes and some interior weight reduction go 12.80s@105 or so.
The infamous recall and subsequent shortened production Cobra. Apparently this model year failed to produce the reported 320 hp. One of the most usual recalls I ever heard.
That was the '99 Cobra, hence no '00 Cobra (excluding the uber rare Cobra R). The '01 supposedly had all the 'upgrades' to make 320hp but it definitely was still overrated.
Yeah, it was 25-30 hp down from that number..10% is alot to over-rate n engine by and people were upset about getting their butts handed to them by Z-28 owners after paying a big premium over the GT price..I am glad it happened because Ford made it up to Cobra fans by building the terminator a couple years later..
Nothing beat this dohc 4.6 engine in the sound department though..easily one of the best sounding V8's ever..😊
@@thetruthspeaker1978 106 mph trap speed will get you low 13's with traction. So it's not over rated
@acerimmer8338 It wasn't overrated at all post-fix. They made around 275 wheel horsepower and around 280 wheel torque. My cousin owned one.
@moejr1974 Gotta love the people with no knowledge of that timeframe being the most vocal ones talking nonsense. A you said, it's trap speed with its weight indicated the power it had. It made plenty of power after the fix, including under the curve. Wasn't the least-bit overrated.
These were the dark years for Chrysler/ Dodge muscle cars
They only had the Viper..
@@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443 Ture👍
That whopper chassis was awful. But I loved it back in the day
Was this the Cobra that got Ford for under performance🤔
Now they’re overpriced lol.
Just think, a brand new base model f150 5.0l would match this car in the 1/4
The prices now are out of control because the car is full of technology whereas the one in the review was very basic. Other than some changes to the suspension, better seats, and of course the drivetrain it shares most all of its parts with the poverty spec base car. Problem now is no one wants a poverty spec anything and they are okay financing 84 months at 7%. The days of any V8 car costing a minimum of $100K are near.
No, the Cobra still has all the best equipment you could get in a Mustang of that vintage. Power windows/locks/seats, the top Mach 460 radio, keyless entry, traction control, ABS etc. It's just today even base cars come with a level of equipment that's leagues above what the top trims offered 20+ years ago. You can't get manual windows, manual locks, etc, in a Mustang anymore. Actually, I don't think you could get manual windows/locks in a Mustang back then either even on the base models.
Woahhhh

How the hell did they get that GT to go 105mph that’s like 4 mph faster then and stock GT ive ever seen

The New Edge Mustang is cool but the interior is the same plastic as a rubbermaid container

Uh they didn't make Gobs of Torque, lol. Anyway they came with the Teksid Block which is AWESOME
Not all '01 Cobras came with Teksid blocks. Some had leftover Teksids and some had the newer WAP blocks.

They could have at least used the aluminum block in the GTs.
