Great video, was looking forward to seeing this for a while. The inclusion of new review criteria and specificity in the rank determination makes your choices very clear and well articulated. Personally, I'm sad the Hex-o-Matic is gone, mostly because it's my personal favorite that I own. Although I think I prefer the styling, aesthetics, and all metal body of the Hex-o-Matic, I appreciate the practical features of Pro-Use 171 and understand the replacement. I wish more pencils utilized the retractable tip feature as that seems like the best of both worlds. If something had that tip, a twist eraser, and a stylish metal body, that would be my ideal perfect pencil. Too bad it doesn't exist yet, but maybe one day.
Just something to note regarding the rOtring 600 Newton mechanical pencil: While it is a retractable, the internal mechanism is mostly plastic. It feels cheap and I have some concerns about robustness over time. Take it apart and you'll see. The rOtring 800 has a more durable mechanism. As for wobble in the 800, this is easily remedied by installing a mini o-ring on the shaft. I did this and it practically eliminated movement (in fact, i don't experience movement if I use a normal touch--not heavy). Incidentally, I've seen rOtring 600 Newton Lava pencils go for less than $200. I don't know where you saw $300~500, but going that high is where the Trio comes in.
Love it man, good to know there is people that love mechanicals as much as I do. You went deep into every pencil and took your time with each one, just subscribed, keep it up!
One common problem with the rOtring 600 is the vulnerable tip. I think this is due to the weight of the pencil, which ends up being a problem when dropped. It tends to fall tip forward. And with the mass of the pencil behind it, the tip will bend. rOtring really should reinforce the tip, as this is a common problem I see posted about on Reddit (r/mechanicalpencils). My solution? Take a disposable BiC ballpoint pen cap (from the soft opaque barrel versions), snip that annoying "clip", and use this as a cap. Fits great, is cheap, and does the job easily.
I just started doing that yesterday. I found it on reddit under that very post. Works great, and there's no possible way for the cap to damage the brass pencil at all!
Goddamn it. My Rotring Tikky 0.5 is now officially broken. I have used that pencil for 20 years. I got it when I started my education, I wrote basically everything with it, except the exams, and I studied mathematics, so that is a lot of writing. It got me through my university, bachelors degree and later masters. And now when I'm doing my phd it has decided to die on me. This pencil I'm not going to throw away, I'm going to find a decent box for it and I'm going to bury it in my back yard. Now I'm looking for a new pencil, and if you guys have any suggestions which one I should go for please write to me.
Which are the longest mechanical pencils? I have a Koh I Noor, but at 14,5cm (or 5.7 inches) of length it feels short - I use it to draw and like to hold the pencil a little more towards the back. Nice video, thank you.
Hey there...I thought I was having a deja vu moment this afternoon...haha. Anyway, a great video and I enjoyed watching it again. I also liked your recent video on the Staedtler series pencils. Keep up the good work!
Frankly I love all your review. I just get a Pentel P205 at my place. Wish they have P207. Cost around USD.4. And I bought Del Guard LX and Kuru Toga Roulette.
Hey folks, if you don't read descriptions, please consider doing so on this one. I had to upload this video a second time after accidentally deleting it.
My 9 yr old daughter loves mechanical pencils and I usually gift her one (or some other good quality school supply) when she gets an A on a test or in a class. She's in 4th grade and is currently using the Koru Toga Pipe slide in school and the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 at home. She also uses STAEDTLER Mars Plastic erasers. Any suggestions for improvements or upgrades in this particular application? Love your videos and thank you for all of your hard work!
Hey, I'm also a big fan of the rotring mechanical pencils and I've just dropped my 600 on his tip and bent it. I was wondering, if you'd be so kind as to share, where did you get a replacement for the tip of the pencil? Thanks! And also, a great video, I might buy something else from your list now that I know about them. :D
#PentelFanBoy #PentelLove The Pentel Sharp P205 is my old school favorite. Current favorite is the Pentel Orenz PP500 series and currently using the 0.3 mm PP503 with AIN STEIN HB.
I am a carpenter and have been for 40 years, and as such have been using pencils for a long time. What flicks my switch is braking my concentration to sharpen a pencil. I have been searching for almost as long as I can remember the perfect pencil for me. In my everyday work, scribing rough timber and trim work I find the Zebra Grafix 0.9 mm. they come in sizes 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9. I use Uni Nano Dia leads and this combination is the best I've found. they cost £2.45 in the uk and last 12 months if I look after them. The site I buy them from is "Cult of pens".They are a great site, with everything drawing and writing-related items you could imagine. For drawing and drafting, I use Pentel Orenz 0.2 mechanical pencil again with Uni leads. Give them a go cheap, lightweight and robust. Be interested to hear what you have to say.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question. I will probably go with the .5mm to start out.. I will also probably go for a $10 - $20 buck Mech. pencil from your top 10 list. If you want to give me a recommendation I would really appreciate it.. especially if there is something is new that came out since you made the Top 10 list. Thanks again and thank for putting out such cool, entertaining and useful youtube videos..
Great video! I know you’re busy, but I’d like to see a top ten list of pencils categorized by price. Something like pencils less than $15, $15 to $25, and greater than $25. Some of your Top Ten aren’t really in the same class. The Spoke 4 is a great pencil, but it way out classes some very good $10 pencils that might make your Top Ten if in the same price range. Anyway, just my opinion. 🤓
Thanks for the video! Just a tip, if you sign up for an amazon affiliate account and put your links in the description, you can make some money if people decide to buy these pencils search on google for Amazon affiliate or Affiliate marketing.
Have you heard of the Kuelox mechanical pencil? It looks to be a clone of the of rOtring 600 made in China, but, unlike the 600, it has a retractable lead sleeve/tip, so it's pocket safe. And they're $9.00 shipped on eBay right now.
Just ordered it a few days ago. Still waiting for it to come in. Chinese eBay buys usually take 2 weeks to get here. There are two brands of rOtring knockoffs: RedCircle and Kuelox. Supposedly, the RedCircle is only OK and the Kuelox are good. I could send it your way for review after I play with it for a couple of days if you're interested.
Hi there! If you are a Rotring lovers you definitely have to try a Delguard Eraser Type Z www.jetpens.com/Zebra-DelGuard-Eraser-Refill-Z-Pack-of-5/pd/18441 mounted in lieu of the original one. It fits the hole perfectly (you don’t have to use the original adapter) so it increases the eraser diameter (4.7mm) and fixes possibly the only weakness of rotring pencils. I use this customization with my Rotring 500, which for me is the perfect tradeoff between quality and weight and the number 1 pencil of my personal top 10. Congrats on your channel. I love it.
Came across this video looking for pencil for work (data collection) ... my likes are metal knurled grip ... retractable pipe sleeve (pocket safe)... .7 lead ... durable ......prefer some weight to a pencil ....still can’t put my finger on the perfect one lol 😂
Clutch Situation lol as you saw on your other video ... I ordered rotring rapid pro last night ... and to support us made I ordered an autopoint also .. having the thicker lead for some days is what I need (I work inside one shift and outside next shift) so my outside pencil will be autopoint and inside will be rotring... great videos keep it up .. have you ever looked at keybar... it’s another cool thing I like for keys ... kind of goes with edc items
Dem Dem the pencil guy I currently have a rotring rapid pro that I have used daily for about 8 months now and love it ... I go through about a stick of lead a day sometimes more so it definitely gets used lol I wasn’t a fan of the rubber nubs on the graphgear 1000 ... the rapid pro with the knurled barrel is perfect and it’s heavy just like I like
The eraser dock plastic is surprisingly cheap and is prone to stretch and is really off-putting to me. S20/10 are fine pencils but this particular problem is the main reason why they don't make my Top Ten.
@@ClutchSituation While I haven't had that issue, I can definitely see why. Actually I've had more problems with my Rotring 600, but that's probably because it's really meant to just stay at one place on not move around. Either way, great video. :)
Hello. Can you confirm the lead breaking problem with the TWSBI precision? Is it just shit talking or something we need to consider when buying this pencil.
Clutch Situation I want to buy this but the problem with lead is a serious one.In Greece the TWSBI is actually more expensive than the rotring 600.Which one would you recommend.

Rotring 600 is just like BWAHAHAHA I’m still the king. Btw these top ten lists have really helped me out so thanks for making these videos!

I admire your honesty and polite request for some civility brother. Respect.
I enjoy your top 10 lists and the accompanying analysis. I've picked up a few pencils that I really enjoy based on your videos.
19:42 Also, in Stranger Things S01, the science teacher is wielding a Graphgear 500, which, I think, is also an anachronism.
Looks like i found another golden underrated channel doing what they love. Subscribed.
Love your vids man I’m OBSESSED with pencils i made my channel from watching you keep up the vids man

Not trying to sound egotistical but if that was true for me I would have a lot of pencils

Excuse to watch this a second time haha
I just found your channel today and was wondering if you have tried the Staedtler elite fineline
I have not.
Even after reading the description I completely forgot that this was a reupload and just watched like half of it..
Have you tried the Worther 3.15mm pencil? It's a beauty!
I'm kinda new to the world of mechanical pencils.. What lead width do you prefer to use (like .5mm or .7mm)??
Whatever feels right. For precision, skinnier lead.

I know. I deliberately don't do that to encourage people to buy from small businesses like Tokyo Pen Shop or Jetpens.
Superb...... entertaining.
Are the ones sold on amazon from amazon authentic. I’ve bought all my rotrings from them and you’ve made me a bit paranoid
If bought from Rotring on Amazon, yes, but you never know which generation they'll send you.

Is this mechanical pencil thing like a community thing here. I only asked for a good pencil and I got a whole channels worth lol
Thank you!
Does the Rotring 600 can be use with multiple lead?
Only whatever lead size it comes with.
I just bought the zebra delguard 2019
Good video! But honestly too long!

Wher can i get the platinum pro use 171
Jetpens.com if it isn't sold out.
Clutch Situation thank you
Clutch Situation i love a very heavy pencil what do u recommend
the newton lava is 200 on ebay
Why no Kuru Toga roulette?
Because it isn't in my personal Top Ten. It sounds like you and I have different tastes. And that's ok.
What camera does he use?
Samsung Galaxy S7
Where can I purchase the replacement tip. The same happened to mine and has been out of commission since.
jetpens.com
Rotring 600 and Pentel Graph Gear 100 are drafting pencils. I think they cannot be put in th list.
And I think I made the video and I can make the list whatever I like. ;)

Nope. Eraser dock.

can you use better lighting? so we can see more details.
Wait, did you mean to say it comes in different flavours...?
no kuru toga in your top 10? then this is just wrong

You talk too much
Hello. Can you confirm the lead breaking problem with the TWSBI precision? Is it just shit talking or something we need to consider when buying this pencil.
You should consider it. Remember that it comes in fixed sleeve variants as well. My biggest complaint is the grip.

Rotring 600. No contest.
