      Yep, the engine is always on a "rev" without a load behind it. Don't over rev it too often on a simple test stand. Get that thing in a car and it will run like a scalded goat !

    For those who havent had 50 years of learning about performance and what makes a hot rod hot, I offer you this...
    No matter what you do to modify an engine to make more horsepower. No matter what the flow numbers say about the cylinder heads. No matter what the cfm of your induction. It is the Camshaft that has the most influence of all of these things and will make or break your efforts. The cam is Lord Master of engine performance... Study that.
    Unless there is a turbo, a blower, nitro methane, or nos2.involved. In that case you can forget the cam and keep a broom and floor sweep in the trunk. But you will be fast for awhile.

    Its amazing how quick a small block revs without a torque converter hooked to it. Its often a disappointment for a customer if they hear it on the stand first then you put it in the car and they think you did something wrong.

    Nice streetable every day driver. I had one similar with a flat tappet cam at about the same duration. 11.5 to 1 pistons ran decent on premium pump gas but when you got the 100 octane av gas in her she rocked. At various times I had a 650 cfm holley 2 barrel, a r6210 spread bore 650 and a 600 double pumper. Lots of fun.

      I have my dads 69 Vette without build specs. He’s passed on and I’m not sure what I have but I did find the receipt for 3965754 cam and it needs high octane to run. I don’t even know if I need leaded or unleaded gas in it.

    • @ralphwatten2426
      @ralphwatten2426 2 роки тому +1

      @@hinghampool1064 Octane doesn't have so much to do with cam duration as it does with compression. If you have compression above 10 or 10.5 to one you're going to need at least 91 octane to keep it from detonating itself to death. Above 10.5 you'll need 92-93 or more octane to keep itself from detonating or "pinging". You'll hear it ping when you punch it. My car ran hot with 91 and idled poorly and pinged. That's all we can get here now and it's unleaded. If you experience something like ping or high engine temps you'll need to mix your premium gas with 100 octane low lead aviation fuel that you can get at your local air field or airport. With about 96 octane the old girl turned into a monster.

    Back in the day, the consensus was Chevy ruled small blocks / Mopar ruled big blocks - unless you talked to a Ford guy. Ford and Mopar had some good small blocks in their own right and Chevy and Ford had some good big blocks but Chevy small blocks were a-plenty, interchangeable and the ports on their heads were bigger bone stock than say a Ford 351 Windsor. Conversely, Mopar mass produced big block torque monsters. They'd stick a Hemi in almost anything...

      Never been a fan of holleys they say they are good for making power but I guess I never had a good one or something because every time I replaced one with a quadrajet it was a whole lot better all around in every way and I wasnt messing with jets and float bowl levels and shit constantly I've never had any luck with any square bores an edelbrock here and there worked good but not compared to the kick of those big secondaries I always set mine up to have a split second of yeah bog so you really feel the kick in the ass of the secondaries opening up you dont get that adjustment with square bores vacuum operated secondary carbs I'm biased towards quadrajets it's all I've ever run I know how to get the most out of them cuz when we were young they were everywhere and everything came with one so I. Had to learn how to work on them tweak the secondary metering rods and adjust the air doors etc when all is on point they cannot be beat and hardly even go out of adjustment no gas all over the motor for jet changes and shit theres no need to change the jets almost ever unless it's a big block carb on a small block motor or something like that I'm running one now that's a 800 cfm on a 305 with zero issues runs like a scalded cat try to put a 800 cfm holley on a 305 its gonna drown it smoke black smoke and burn your eyes how rich it runs especially under full throttle the plugs will be black as shit and it will be a dog at best but the quadrajet only gives the engine what it needs and no more than that they were an engineering marvel and the best at the time and to me still are how many power valves have you replaced lol talk about rich again edelbrock is better but not by a large margin thermoquads were edelbrocks all the same Carter afb's all that same design which out performed holleys all day can u tell I dont like holleys lol basura trash garbage junk lmao sorry for rambling lol

    Had a 1970 307 and 3 speed manual. We put in a 4 barrel 350. But we put on the 307 head while we mechine shop the 350 heads. That right there was the best setup the cars was. Even after we got the 350. Head back on it wasn’t as good with the smaller 307 head. It was a torque monster like a big block. And 3 speed 1 gear was 55 but even in 3 gear it was still take off in any gear. The throttle was so punchy push the gas along any car and 1 second bye. But we put the 350 head back and have to wait for power. It needed 373 gearing.

    • @trillrifaxegrindor4411
      @trillrifaxegrindor4411 5 років тому +5

      307 heads don't breathe for shit,have prohibitively small valves and absolute GARBAGE combustion chambers.
      what you are saying is an often repeated,severly misunderstood myth.THE VALVES ARE SMALL AND SHROUDED
      the airflow through the head is pathetic,you were under an illusion that the 307 heads were good,they really were not.
      its like the "305 heads are great on a 350" no they are not unless you do massive,expensive time
      wasting porting which still has severe limitations ,THE VALVES ARE STILL SHROUDED and
      will never deliver the performance of a properly preped 350 head such as the vortec which are super cheap,
      easy to find and available brand new for peanuts.
      take off the 307 head,put on a vortec 350 head and you get an instant 50+ horsepower and pound feet of torque MINIMUM
      the only limited benefit 307/305 head have is it raises the compression BUT IT ALSO SHROUDS THE VALVES
      if you like this benefit get either smaller chambered 350 heads or mill them down OR GET THINNER HEAD GASKETS......PERIOD.
      305/307 HEADS choke the breathing of the engine ,this is fact not opinion.an engine is an air pump,
      the more air it breathes and the faster it can breathe allow it to make more power.use 305/307 heads as boat anchors

    • @thomas4315
      @thomas4315 5 років тому

      Not for the reason why I wanted it. It’s on a 350 block and mated to an 3 speed. Torque. Or lower airflow .At the expense of loseing 4,500- 4,800 that I don’t use on the street. 1 gear was 55 mph. Just the same as the corvette.
      And the pull away power in any gear was like a big block even 4 gear.
      I could get the same with 411 or 373 gearing as I did my mustang 302 Ho but you have to shift to 1-2 gear to get to 55. The 3 speed would blow by the 1-2 shift like you were standing still.
      That why I seid that was the perfect street car. Even was better that that angle head “camel back head “ we put back on, no power down low. But the 302 head I could light and fry the tire going ,20 mph with just rocking the throttle

    • @thomas4315
      @thomas4315 5 років тому

      But with the 307 head. And 3 speed manual I could fry the tire anytime below 40 mph. The 4 speed would be diffrent you would burn out more but not faster as the gearing tighter. Unless it was stock at 273 gearing

    Thanks for a nice, short video.
    I had a 350 4 bolt motor with a 465 lift Cig Erson cam i built in my 86 El camino back in '94..
    Had the same lope and response to it. I cant remember much more spec wise but i think the cam had a little more duration. I put double Z28 springs at the valves and Cloyes double roller timing chain. I was about 22yrs old then.. Had alot of fun in LA with that El co lol.. it had a limited slip posi rear end and 2004r od trans.
    It would swim thru cars on the highway lol
    I let 1 or 2 real cute girls drive me out to Santa Monice beach a couple nights in it
    .. they said.. wow this car is fast! : )
    Good memories

    Sounds real nice. Could you go back and find that engine, put it back on the stand, and slowly take it from 2000 to 5000? Real slow - I want to hear it smooth out nicely and run up it where it belongs. If you could do that I would appreciate it. Thanx.

    I see you modified that water neck to put in a normal garden hose, but where does the water go once it exits the water pump? I assume that it just dumps on the ground.

      Pretty cheap actually for what you get something about 275 hp at the crank w 1.94 1.50 valves in cast iron heads and a small cam like that for less than 2 grand is actually a decent deal with zero miles and a decent warantee to boot where can you beat that ? And its gonna be reliable and last a good long time even if you beat on it decent just keep the oil changed and the rpms below 5 grand and youll never blow it up if you do youll have worked for it and really had fo try to do it low on oil is the only way for sure to do it or if you get to whipping donuts and i mean whipping hard posi donuts all the oil can slosh to one side in the pan and the oil pump suck air hence starving the furthest bearing from the pump for oil and creating a oil starvation issue .making heat and friction and at the high rpms doing donufs will in fact spin the bearing i know this to be very true from experience alchohol was involved as well fho lol
