Thanks for sharing. I am growing red cabbage and I just tied them because my neighbor was telling me I needed to do this . That is when I decided to do a google search in what is the protocol and came upon your experiment. Thanks for sharing . I believe that I do like the cabbage head to be closer together than look like leaf lettuce. I bought some from a market today and was making coleslaw with it. I noticed the outer leaves are tougher. I decided to throw away the first couple layers.
In Korean kimchi you want the lighter leaves because they are considered more tender vs the green leaves are a bit tougher. When making kimchi, we remove the outer darker layers and use the inner, more yellow leaves in the kimchi
Thanks for this experiment! I'm literally growing cabbage now and I've been wondering if I should begin to tie them up or not. I think after watching this I'm going to let them be.
I love the green and thick leaves soo I probably wouldn’t tie, BUT i did enjoy watching this. 🙏🏻😂
I have 2 big heads growing that are tied up that were all ready growing when I got them. 7 small heads from seeds that look good but 1/4 the size not tied up. And a Korean wife that says we must tie.
Interesting. My cabbage are forming round heads without tying, under row cover, but they are different varieties. My first time growing cabbage. How did you avoid cabbage moths in the open?
No tie definitely.
I always grow without tying. The taste us much better. The yellow has less taste and sun enriched nutrients.
What type of cabbages are they?
Napa Cabbage
I'd say don't tie it! I bet there's more nutrients in the greener leaves.
Great point!
Koreans do this with Napa cabbage, it won't help much with standard cabbage.
Also it isn't tied up until the rosette stage is advanced.
