    Hey your videos are the best I've seen! Never Stop! Also planning on growing some cauliflower soon, do you think if I followed these steps for cabbage it'd still work out. Every other video I find on cauliflower just drags on and on giving me no information. All my other vegetables have been grown based off your guides :) please help lol, even if I have to tweak the process a little.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому +3

      Thank you very much for the comment. The process for cauliflower from sowing to planting is pretty much same as cabbage. Once planted, feed with a balanced fertilizer (such as 5-5-5) instead of nitrogen rich fertilizer. Also you might need to provide some support for the plants as they grow. I hope this helps and best of luck to you.

      The holes are usually done by caterpillars. You can either use B.T. (a natural bacteria) solution or spray neem oil mix. If you don't want to use any sprays, garden netting is a great option too. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment.

  • @katec9893
    @katec9893 2 роки тому +4

    These look so cute, like babies growing in pots!! I had trouble last year growing kale and kalettes, they got infested with cabbage white caterpillars which was unpleasant. I'm going to try again with a net, do you cover brassicas with nets? How do you deal with pests that target them?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому +1

      Either netting or I use neem oil mix to prevent. If you see the caterpillars, use B.T. natural bacteria solution. In any cases the best is to monitor and control them at early stages. Sometime I get fooled by how great the leaves look, but when I check underneath, I see the eggs. So make sure to check both sides of the leaves. I might be wrong, but I have many birds in my backyard and I think they enjoy the caterpillar diet too🤷‍♂️. I hope this helps. Thanks again for visiting and happy gardening.😊

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому +7

      Not a big difference between bags but I noticed the ones in plastic pot did a bit better. And B.T. or (Bacillus Thuringiensis) is a naturally occurring bacteria and one of the most common pest control to kill leaf eating caterpillars like cabbage worms, bagworms, leafrollers, tent caterpillars, gypsy moth larvae,.... It can be applied as a liquid or powder and you can find several varieties certified as organic. You may also use garden netting to control caterpillars if you don't wish to use any pesticides. Depending on the condition you are sowing seeds, you need to adjust light, heat, and mainly watering. I have tried (and failed) many times to find the best way that works for me. If your seedlings die after germination, probably it is due to “damping-off,” a fungal disease. Try to sprinkle some baking soda around the seedlings (not too much) and do not over water them. I hope this helps.

      @@TowardGarden Hello again and Happy Saturday Do you have a video on planting sweet potatoes "slips"?? If so please what's the link?? I just happen to have a sweet potato in my fridge. I have been watching lots of gardening videos on "how to grow sweet potatoes from Slips" ..heck it looks easy enough. I will be growing my sweet potatoes on grow bags. This is going to help me so much. I started container gardening 2 years ago and I have had a lot of great results as well as some bad. What do you use to place the pots on I use a mix of grow bags and the blue containers with handles. My grass is dying because of my pots.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому

      I try to avoid having pots sitting on the grass too. One of the best options is to use metal shelving units. You can have them on short legs, about 1 ft to elevate shelves from ground so grass don't get damaged. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

      I usually make my soil. This mixture is equal parts of composted chicken manure, peat moss and perlite plus 1/4 cup of garden lime. You can find all of these items at your local garden centers. If you want to use potting soil, my choice is Kellogg organic Patio Plus. And the containers are 10 in wide x 10 in deep, 7 gallon and 5 gallon grow bags (check video @2:59 min). Sometime I get fooled by how great the leaves look, but when I check underneath, I see the eggs. For other pests I usually spray neem oil mix. Also, we have many visiting birds in our backyard and I think they enjoy the caterpillar diet too, but I am not sure. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment😊

      Hi. I found many benefits to starting seeds in trays: The growing media is more easier to control and manage. The temperature requirements, soil condition, light are few of them. I prefer this for vegetables that benefit from starting ahead and not for all my crops.
